Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Just been reading a 1966 J Bertrand's NZ coin catalogue. There seems to be a few varieties of NZ coins that don't seem to get mentioned so much these days. For instance there's apparently a 1942 3d variety with a bigger gap between the 9 and the 4. Or a 1945 3d with a low 5 in the date.

Anyone know the reason for the apparent loss of recogniton of these varieties?

Perhaps the distribution of the varieties is evenly spread, making each variety common enough that they don't draw attention? Dunno, that's just me thinking out loud.

i do have most of them..as i have that book as-well.
did you know the 1935 threepence as a wide date between the 3-5 and also the 1939 sixpence has a high 9 on the last 9 on date. the 1941 florin as a wide date as-well between 4-1,there is alot off errors on a number of coins.
also the 1936 florin has a high 6 which you can tell by [kg] if its low by the rim it normal one,if the [kg] is higher the [6] is higher aswell

Chefman1- I knew about the first but not the other ones. I've met the person who discovered the 1935 3d date varieties however. I gather there's a roughly equal spread of the varieties and thus no difference in value. That confirms Echoriath's theory for that one.

I will have to check my coins see which varieties I have. I will be counting the toes on my 1940 half crowns as well! ;-)

Lol, it's very irritating when someone pops in and 'steals' your auction at the last minute! That keeps happening to me because TM have stuffed up the iPhone app so I get the notification that I've been outbid about 2-3 days after it ends!

The 9.4 million includes all the ones with dots above the scroll and the ones with dots below as well. Krause has a value for the no dot of US$20 in F and US$150 in VF compared with US$1.75 and US$10 for the others. Rare to me!! Just like error coins. lol

HOWEVER on a very close zoom I found a dot over the scroll and have pulled the auction. Bugger, thought I was rich for a while!![/quote

Hey guys... I have some questions about some coins I have come across.... I dont have pictures but a rough estimate would be great..

1. Cook Islands Proof $10.00 1953 - 1978 Coronation Coin
2. Western Samoa Proof 1 Tala 1928 - 1978 Kingford Smith Pacific Flight Coin
3. Cook Island Proof Struck at the Royal Australian Mint Seven and a half dollar & two and a half dollar coin set

Thanks

CIA - HOSNZ currently has the $2.5 and $7.5 up for auction so you could try watching that for an idea of the market value. There's about 1.81 Troy Oz of silver and with silver at roughly $40 an Oz at the mo that should give you you're base price.

chrisr5 - 2012-10-25 14:02:00
447

The '78 Cook Island $10 has about 0.82 T Oz and the Samoan Tala has 0.9 T Oz. The value of silver has gone beyond the values quoted in the catalogue.
