Thanks Donald,
I found an interesting local web site.
Have been able to educate myself a bit just by looking at pictures,
Guess you know who I mean.. :)
Will hunt out the envelopes tomorrow and see what my new knowledge provides me with.
Thanks

Hi. Has anyone seen a framed Gold Miniature Sheet set 2012 YOTD (ltd ed) for sale and aware of the prices. I could be interested in purchasing but am unsure what they are selling for since they were Sold Out by NZ Post?
Many thanks

The "safe" method I know nothing about but I hope it works on the more difficult perfs ,eg--- 13-14 x 13.5, 14-13 x 13.5,nearly perf 12 etc.
Difficult Watermarks can be detected using Lighter Fluid on a black background, this method can used on both Mint and used stamps as it will not harm the gum but it can react with the colours on some later stamps. Do it outside as the fumes will get you.A product called Clarity is a safer method and has none of the drawbacks of the lighter fluid and is the one I use. Other than that I also use the Morley Bright Instatector (Inst-a-tector) Watermark detector ,Google and you will find out how it works.
Apart from black backgrounds and holding the stamp up in sunlight I have had the most success with the first two methods.

Thanks, will try the Clarity method if I can find some.Safe is a German company that makes digital perf guages, They are expensive( AUD $500 )new but have no idea how reliable they are. But as I find it difficult using the ruler type I thought I may go down that track if any body had good feedback on them

I Bought my bottle off ( pu4) Paul Wales, ask a question on one of his Auctions and he might put a bottle on for you.

Good to see you at the Fair Steven and a good crowd came along as well , 12 Tables in all, good to put faces to Trademe names.Steve the Cardman was also present but we made the mistake of positioning his table directly under a light and the glare off his balding head was blinding some of the collectors. All and all a good friendly lot glare and all.

A question for those who have knowledge of very early 1900's Rail Post Offices .. Were the early Postmarks "RPO -" then letters with a dot between for the route the train took ?

And a further on the general Postmarks theme - was a C-Class mark used at Upper Symonds Street (AK) in the 1940's - nothing on a Class-C listed in Wooders publication for this Office

Thanks

There are a great variety of Railway Post Office cancellations and they are of various styles, sizes and types. There is a great book which is the bible on them. "Railway Travelling Post Offices of New Zealand" Your local stamp club will have a copy. Don't know about Upper Symonds st Post office datestamps. hardly anyone collects Auckland City postmarks but perhaps somebody can tell you.

You will have to loan him some of your baby talcum powder and that should sort out that problem. I even had one of my Auckland collectors specially come to the fair and did so well he promises to come back again soon. I guess you can get some cheap one day airfares or use air points to make a visit.

Thanks for that Steven .. I see an interesting thread on Stampboards ..

Interestingly enough we were lucky enough to score a KE 1/2d pair with a couple of nice strikes of the scarcest class 'Papakura' mark in a bulk lot purchased on here along with a few other nice gems :-)

From 12-14 October there will be a big national stamp exhibtion/show/dealers bourses etc held in Blenheim with collectors and dealers from all around NZ and from overseas attending. There will be lots of talks and special displays. why not get in the car and drive over to Blenheim that weekend to see how others do it. There is also a big Postcard show on the previous weekend in your own Nelson at Club Waimea in Richmond where there will no doubt be several stamps collectors and dealers.present

When was New Zealand's first stamp showing a ship issued?

Here is another question. Can you still use half cent stamps in New Zealand?

kiwisteven - 2012-09-29 20:32:00

Yes another question.

What is the highest face e stamp currently on sale by New Zealand post.

kiwisteven - 2012-09-29 20:33:00
4435

And lastly. Are NZ Government life stamps still postally valid in New Zealand?

now here is another question to replace one of those answered.
We all know that NZ stamps have been issued with a surcharge for charity going to health.

can you name the other 4 organisations that have benefited from surcharges on New Zealand stamps?

And to replace the other answered question is this one?

Is it legal to post a letter in New Zealand using a United States Postage stamp?

Is the Red Cross (1959 Red Cross stamp) one of these?
And the World Wildlife Fund (1991 Tuatara) another?

Red Cross is one of those but WWF is not as the stamps don't have a surtax or surcharge on them. That is one out of 4 you have got.

Spot on Paul. The United States Air force operates an official American post office at the Antarctic Centre. You do however have to be a qualified person to be able to use it.

Was it the Auckland Islands stamps in around 1900. I'm not at home at present so I can't check but was this for the General Grant expedition??
Or am I way off track here.
