Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Just going back to the Sear catalogue: there is a table of titles and powers for Severus Alexander, which says his tribunician power (TR P) was renewed each year on 1 January, the eighth year therefore being AD 229. His third consulship (COS III) started that same year, so TRP VIII and COS II shouldn't occur together, unless it was a slip of the die-cutter's attention at the time. That would explain why the Severan coins I've found have either VII and II or VIII and III, not different combinations of these numbers.

A long time ago, an entire courier van was stolen/hijacked by an escaped prisoner and my buyer either didn't get his item at all or it was delayed quite some time (I never got final confirmation). The courier company didn't want to know as soon as they knew currency/valuables were involved; the conditions are so tight that anything you'd actually want to send by courier is either technically illegal or not covered.
BTW - what town/city was your note headed to? Let me know and I can send the details to the dealers on the NZNDA list.

Does anybody have the dates for Mowbrays auction in Wgtn later this year?

I have 10 Oct in my diary but haven't confirmed it yet - drop Malcolm a line for good measure.

Thanks Martin. Just trying to organise some dates for a return Fiji fishing trip, as last months was a big let down weather wise. Kidneys have recovered enough from the liquid refreshments to contemplate another try before the higher temps and humidity set in.Will ring Malcolm or Arna on Monday to confirm Wgtn venue dates.

It's all right I'm used to it.

I've noticed some pretty blatant examples of reselling by sellers who are not listed as being in trade. Should I dob them in?

dtpapa - 2014-08-31 21:37:00
4422

LOL....good luck with that dtpapa..by the way your 1933 set of coins looks like they
have been clean..so when your brought then..why are you selling them..you should be [intrade] to ?

chefman1 - 2014-08-31 23:41:00
4423

If I bought them last week, then yeah, I'd be in trade! But since I've had them for at least a couple of years, I don't think so. They are advertised as ave/circ, so whether they have been cleaned is neither here nor there.

dtpapa - 2014-09-01 01:05:00
4424

I'd add that all my items are bargains, I'm losing money on them. I try to understate them in any description, in contrast to certain other sellers on trademe, who I'll not name, who talk up their merchandise something rotten!! This coin so so wonderful, blah blah blah ..., it is a great investment blah blah blah ... (er ..but not for you the buyer, for me the seller, who only just bought it a few weeks ago and is now asking three times the original price!!)

"Last week" would violate the Secondhand Dealers' Act, which requires items to be held for a minimum of 14 days. I take it everyone here is registered?

Included in the newsletter, for those of you who are not on their mailing list.
>>>Here are the Auction Highlights:

As usual there are some interesting bulk lots, as well as valuable single items, so Dealers have lots of opportunities to buy well.

New Zealand Coins.. Two proof 1935 Crowns, plus a toned but unmarked set in original red box; many 1935 3d., some high grade to Unc., pre-decimal single EF-UNC silver coins, plus nice mixed lots with realistic reserves. Then a huge range of Decimal Proofs, right through to 2012, many at reserves well below issue price. NZ Gold proofs almost complete with duplicates.

GB..Valuable lots from hammered to early milled, an interesting and EF+ lot of Maundy singles. A good variety of other World Coins too.

There are over 100 lots of Gold coins at realistic reserves. These range from Roman coins and George III Guineas through to modern singles and sets. Reserves for most are set below the current bullion price.

Some rare and unusual items include Trade tokens from Mears , an EF Hall/Emu mule, and we have a nice range of silver Ancient Rome + Greek coins in F-VF condition

The Banknote section is amazing! We have several items from the Alistair Robb Estate: An outstanding £1 Fitzroy Debenture, The 1869 £1 Union Banknote ex Griffin, sold in by us in 2004; 1840 Kororarika Unissued cheques and some 1840 Wellington Bills of Exchange etc. Probably the oldest Financial instruments in private hands

Later there is a good range of Trading Banks: including a Contemporary Forgery of a 1930 National Bank £ 1

There are many pre-decimals and decimals., the Decimals include TWO Noteworthy Album Collections

This year we have an unusually strong offering of Militaria. There are 9 x NZ Land War medals , including 3 from the 1843-46 1st War. There are 5 x NZ WWII Groups with Memorial Crosses. There are two important Family Groups. The best is from the Hawkesby Family which runs over three generations, beginning with Grandfather in the Royal Irish Regiment , NZ War 1865-66, his son in India and as a NZ Rifleman in WWI. The Grandson, Major G H Hawkesby served in WWII and through Gallant Action in Italy was awarded a DSO.

You can set up postal or phone bids but need to register beforehand.
Be aware of the buyer premiums to add on as can catch the novice out .

Hi there, just a quick query (that could get longer!) I have been given my late grandfather's coin collection (mainly British coins) and some old notes on price/condition of coins etc but not sure how valid this info is now..I have a large shoebox FULL, some in 'sets' several of the same coin in various different conditions. Where on earth do I take them to get them valued and how do I know the person I take them too is not telling me porkies about their worth and not ripping me off? I haven't got a clue about coin collecting but my mother suggested that Granddad would approve of me selling some off to fund some future projects. Thanks in advance.

Try posting a few pics of a couple with the old "value of item" .There will be a few on here that could give a pretty good stab at current selling prices. This will of course be different from "Book Price "and should give you a gauge on how relevant your info is.

Seems a big outlay to me for only $22 profit at silver spot price? Or are you going to slowly sell all 268 individually? Just curious how you big spenders think or is it all too secret to tell!! :-)

1,Tell me where you can buy silver at spot and I will be heading there.
2, I don't sell,only accumulate .
3, I take the side that silvers price is manipulated ,and while it is, am happy to just keep buying.
4, No real secret really.
