This collection was from Dunedin so thats a bit strange then.So there's no collectors value to them and won't the hydrogen peroxide solution ruin the stamp?

Hi Don , I have been watching with interest .What about Mint stamps with oxidizing? Will the fumes do the same job without damaging the Gum?Perhaps placing a mint stamp on a grate above the solution?
I await your opinion.

I have a cover from 1978 which has been postmarked using an ordinary
dated handstamp but that particular date was the first day of issue for a
particular set of stamps, so it appears to have been postmarked incorrectly. Is this a common occurrence and how does it affect the value of a cover? To qualify as a first day cover, does the postmark have to be the "first day of issue" mark? Thanks for any help.

Another anomaly for donaldo: I have a 1979 unaddressed fdc with 14c overprint stamp postmarked 6.9.79 but the first day of issue was actually 31.8.79. Does this cover have any value? Tks.

Is there any truth in the rumour that TM is considering allowing international sellers on the site ?

To who's advantage can this be - only collectors ?

Collectors like myself use ebay and TradeMe interchangeably anyway.

So what you are saying is, it does not matter to you - you trade where it is best for you which is understandable.

I suppose the loss/gains of collector trade is negligible compared to other commodities.

I note a good demand for NZ material exists overseas but collectors there also would probably want to offer their material.

A two way street makes one alert to the type of traffic, also applies to philately. Too much of the same pie causes indigestion.

A more varied Global trade brings other horizons.

.

philafarinz - 2012-06-14 11:16:00
4218

Yep. I trade where I find what I'm looking for, and I compare prices (incl postage) between the two before I bid. A number of our TradeMe sellers of collectibles also have a significant trade on ebay now.

akaroa - 2012-06-14 18:27:00
4219

I have traded on ebay longer than I have on Trademe and I much prefer Trademe because there are generally far fewer hassles with rip off merchants so prevalent on ebay. As a seller on ebay you will always get ripped off by somebody exploiting the Paypal system of payment where it is impossible for a seller outside the USA to prove they have posted an item let lone had it delivered in another country. postage costs on ebay can also be nearly criminal.

kiwisteven - 2012-06-14 21:51:00
4220

Indeed the Paypal system is also to me a huge concern.
When a paid item take too long to arrive, the buyer shouts help at paypal who in turn holds payment or reverses payment in trust till the buyer advises that the item has arrived.

Imagine the delays and reasons of non compiance resulting in your money being withheld for payment - that sucks, to use a popular cultural profane description.

No wonder everything has to be sent by registered mail to have some certainty of arrival or replacement costs - that unfortunately is the demise of Global trade and leans heavy on the seller's experience.

However to do philatelic business beyond our borders like many othe commodities, we need to adapt to bring NZ to foreign buyers.

With our local postage going up to 70c which is one of the most expensive rate in the world, I can offset that to the good postal system we have here were in some Countries it is a burden due to the mayhem that exists.

A local functional payment system could surely be introduced but the ratification I believe would be more complex.

Sold some used minisheets, auction stated Used
Today buyer has asked for a refund as they looked like to him that they have been in water and have a few wrinkles on some. I have tried to explain they are soaked of in water from envelopes, but cant seem to get through to him, I am guessing he dos'nt understand the difference between CTO and Used, so guess its a refund.
Never had this happen before on Used Stamps.

Maybe the solution is to soak the wrinkled MS again and press, then the wrinkles should come out - mostly.

Hope never to have that on a MNH miniature sheet unless it is a paper fold - lol.

I sometimes get people complaining that their used stamps are hinged. Doh!

Also a lot of Chinese collectors ask if the 1950's period mint stamps are unhinged. As these stamps were issued without gum it doesn't matter at all but I still often get asked.

One of the saddest aspects of NZ Post is the way they have ABOLISHED internal registered post, and stamps on FOREIGN registered post. If you send a rego letter abroad, you pay your $10 or whatever and are given an A5 plastic envelope to insert your letter into. Now where's the collector-interest in that?

In contrast, back when STAMPS could be used for rego, all the higher-value stamps were affixed to the rego envelopes, and these still attract top dollar from collectors. But who wants to pay a cent for an old plastic bag with no stamps on?

Lots of the early 1950s era Mainland China stamps were RE-PRINTED in the mid-50s to supply Australian wholesalers. The Gibbons catalogue identifies the characteristics of most of these reprints, as they engraved new plates.

When I collected China seriously, I always tried to get ORIGINALS but usually could only locate REPRINTS.

But actually, the REPRINTS are the scarcer version. They are mainly found in Australia & NZ, and are worth many times "normal value" in China. This is why savvy Chinese collectors buy up EVERYTHING, as they can send it back to China and make a killing.

Nothing truer said. i often get so called Savvy Chinese collectors trying to say that the 1950 reprints are worthless but then they always end up buying them. it was Bill Hornadge of Seven Seas Stamps who visited Hong Kong and purchased these specially done reprints (Reprinted just for him by the Chinese Post Office) and these stamps were put into the packet trade in NZ and Australia. You can't get them anywhere else so don't believe gibbons and others who say they are worthless.

Hi, team. Does anyone have any feel for how many different New Zealand 1974 commonwealth games covers, paraplegic and major postmark varieties there are?? I have 19. They include 2 pre-games fundraising covers by Chch Rotary, 3 covers from a local pharmacy, a nuphil and the more common varieties. Should I keep my eye out for any other interesting varieties that you guys know about?

There are the Games village and stadium postmarks as well as first day and Paraplegic in Dunedin. 2 or 3 different brands of covers, some special postcards, and a few odds and ends. I have some 74 Games car stickers (One type only) and there are Games DX radio ham cards. A Games $1 coin and those Riccarton Jaycee cinderellas on cover. Thats about it. A nice topic to collect.

Thanks. I almost have it by the sounds of that. But I only have one ham radio card - maybe there are more, and I don't have the stickers. Interestingly there are endless other varieties - such as a Paeroa Centerary cover with a games postmark, and athlete signed covers too. So I know when I ask how many covers and postmarks there are, it's almost an impossible question to answer. I'd be interested in buying items I don't have.

Can any one help me, I was told that some of 1958-61 provisionals that have the overprint 2d on the brown 1 1/2d queens head are counterfeits, is this correct, I just withdraw a auction that had one in the lot, I would hate someone to buy it and think they were getting the right stamp
thanks

Most are genuine but there are also counterfeits out there and some are quite dangerous. You need to show it to an expert to be sure.

Hi all just came across a postal letter from the USA to Mangere posted on the 25th of aug 1973,it has 3 stamps,US 6 cent progress in electronics (Marconi spark coil) US 11 cent airmail progress in electronics (De forest Audions) and a 4 cent United States postage Dag Hammarskjold stamp. The 4 cent stamp has a big colour shift.just wanting to know if it's a rare one. Thanks for your time

I suspect the 4c does not have a colour shift, as it looks, but it will be the famous yellow colour inverted "error". It will have large white areas surrounding the UN building. The regular stamp Dag Hammarskjold stamp was issued in 1962, and a sheet of stamps with the invert. was discovered by a lucky collector shortly after issue. His newly created wealth was quickly destroyed by the USPS who, in a most unsporting move, issued a reprint of 40 MILLION, - all with the invert. Consequently it is only worth a few cents. Google "dag hammarskjold stamp", and the Wikipedia site has an illustration and further details.
Sorry, but worth asking. DON

re 487018965. Is this a new technique. If the buyer does not read the first line???? If the album lot is available it should have a starting price or if the 2012 50¢ stamp is for sale it should be the item illustrated.

I don't think he will sell much using that method.
Why doesn't he just put up auctions for the good items he has?
At least you would then know he has something worthwhile.

Cool thread :D I am a pretty avid stamp collector (as long as it is cheap and attractive). I used to collect them individually, however, now I am more into Presentation Packs! They are amazing. I am looking forward to collecting anything related to geography. Such as the Ross Dependency, Ancient Reptiles of NZ, etc. ^_^ Kind of surprised there isn't one for the London Olympics.
