Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Looking at this auction for 1oz gold Narnia 751101657, does anyone know if or why they were withdrawn from sale?
It seems odd that NZ post would go to all the trouble getting these coins minted (or more likely were an agent for others) and then withdraw them before they were sold out.

Slimy, yes, though the green on the tokens illustrated doesn't look quite the same on the photos at least.

I think that indicates it's a replacement note. If I remember rightly, they tend to be worth a bit more than the usual ones.

Bizarre. I like this part in the item description:

Test Level : Has not been tested.
Physical Condition : Average - More severe usage and wear marks and general untidiness may need some work.

It's a German jeton. Examples dated 1751 and 1759 for sale here with further ID: http://www.anythinganywhere.com/commerce/exo/exoinventory.ht
m

Search for "280 1175" and "280 1177" as the item numbers on the page. Looks like it was issued by an I.B. (-> J.B.) Hecht as Mintmaster in Zellerfeld, Braunschweig.
Here's another on eBay:

There's an English connection as Brunswick-Luneberg (i.e. Hanover) was where the "German Georges" came from and the "GR.BR." in the legend probably stands for GROSSBRITANNIEN, i.e. Great Britain.

auction-auto extend

while it obviously combats the sniper (last second bidder), which is either good all bad, depending on your viewpoint. It can also be a bit tedious, to say the least. I'd like to see an auction end if there is no new high bidder in the final two minutes. At present it seems to extend even when there is no new high bidder. It seems to work very much in favour of the seller, which again, could be viewed as a good or bad thing.

A few years ago there seemed always to be the option of using auto-extend or not when you set up an auction. I haven't noticed it recently - has it been taken away and made the default in recent years?

translateltd - 2014-07-22 15:59:00
4236

it also encourages shill bidding, I'd say. Although I'm sure trademe does its best to stamp that sort of thing out!

I've not come across an auction that extends past it's due close unless another bid is placed within that final 2 minute window. Only exception was when TM goes down, and then they normally add on another 2 hours when up and running again.
There are programs that will only place a minimum increase bid in the last few seconds if that is the strategy you want to use for that particular auction. This will "drag the auction out " but also gives any late comers a chance to enter as well.
A good case for a bidder who may be on say 15 to 20 auctions all closing at the same time.Slowing the auction down will give you a chance at least monitoring each of them and allowing time to bid on them all.

gammoner - 2014-07-22 18:55:00
4238

yes I was thinking more of instances when a bid in the last two minutes extends an auction, even thought that bid is not a highest bid. But I guess that can only happen when the leading bid is an auto-bid. I can see that if you did have 20 say auctions all finishing at the same time, it might give you a better chance to manage them, especially if you are working within a budget.

I reckon the best bidding strategy is to use auto-bid, but bid only once, so your highest bid straight away.

Just back from a week in Christchurch. Did a coin shop tour from the old Avon Stamps and Coins site, around the container mall then up to PA Stamps and Coins at the Bealey Ave/ Papanui Rd corner.
A cheap outing, expenditure zero.

The companies appear to have variable standards. Once saw a coin graded gVF that I would have graded fine (an ancient). As the majority of the companies are in the States too much of that stuff on Trademe would probably lead to a further lowering of standards. Others may disagree.

The more reputable ones are probably OK, with due allowance for US grading standards, but when it comes to the franchise outfits that just seem to buy the equipment, you might as well get your dog to do it, blindfolded. The whole TPG thing just seems to be a marketing ploy, though - why would you need it? US collectors try to game the system by gambling on being able to "crack" slabs and score a higher grading from a different company. That's gambling, not numismatics.

There's another consequence of the auto-extend. It allows a bidder to watch an auction, and NOT bid!! (unless someone else does!!)

Indeed. At least it's still worth $10, or being laminated is it considered to be damaged? Would the Reserve Bank still accept it? I'm guessing retailers wouldn't.
