Thanks, looking to see if it is real or fake. It was owner by my late great uncle who today would have been close to 97 and he was in WW2 so collected a lot of coins in his travels.

Looks not bad in the pictures but I can't add any more. There are very clever fakes of US coins around, as almost every issue of the ANA 'Numismatist' shows, though some of the diagnostics they highlight to identify forgeries look just like normal die spikes and wear to me.

Photo request - does anyone have an example of MM1993-1994/1 (Yamaha Round The World Yacht Race medal) that they could photograph for me pse? We still have a scanned photo from an old Newsletter in the MacMaster catalogue and it could do with updating!

This is a George V half penny that is minted on only one side.
My first thoughts were that it had been filed down but I compared the weight with a whole half penny and it weighs the same.
Any thoughts .

quick history lesson- of course the king of England in 1080 was William 1-(william the conquerer) who reigned from 1066 after winning battle of Hastings until 1087- so would have featured on the 1080 nz penny if there had been one- also compiler/author of the doomsday book- considered to be first census

Thanks Muzz for the clarification William it is then.

R S Lester produced the fully illustrated guide to NZ coins and varieties 1967 and had a few listed unfortunately this is almost impossible to find in print any more but possibly contact the RNSNZ they may be able to sort something out.

There was also a very in depth article on the 1953 threepence by Martin McKenzie that was presented to the wellington coin club around the middle of 1999 (from memory i cannot find it to confirm)

I also have some listed on a website but still very much a work in progress i was intending to work on them the end of this week if i get a chance

Hi, I am new to this site and am after some advice please. Not sure if this is the best place to post? Am wanting to know the value of some coins I have, and also I have some coins that are not in english and or don't have a minting date. How do I find out origin and year and value? My oldest coin is from 1835

Best starting point is to Google any words that you can make out on the coins (if they're in Latin letters, that is) - you'll usually find a reference that will at least tell you the country and denomination. If you're really stuck, post some pictures here - likewise with coins in different alphabets, we'll do what we can to help as long as you aren't posting dozens of pics at once :-)
Once you've found the country it would pay to check your local library for a copy of a coin catalogue and take it from there, bearing in mind that the prices shown are (a) only a guide and (b) what a dealer would likely charge for them, not what you could expect to be paid.

He appears to be hedging a bit in his description when it's obvious a Morgan dollar with an 1861 obverse is fake as is a trade dollar with an ordinary dollar reverse.

Comparisons between the Genuine and Chinese fake 2003 Lord of the Rings Large $1 are on our website now with photos. Easy to spot the difference but good to have it as a reference as the fakes cost only a couple of dollars compared to a catalogue price of $40 for the genuine item. If you see any of these fakes on trademe please report them as they break The Reserve Bank of New Zealand Act, 1989
