Simple Question is a hole a thin? Can I list a stamp as having a thin if the thin passes all the way through?

Me again... The new NZ RNZAF stamps are quite large. Do you think that they will bring out smaller stamps as they have done in the past with some of the xmas issues.
I sell stamps over the road on Sella under Baagain Baazaar - is there any way I can import my listings over to here?

Yes, the RNZAF stamps are larger than normal but this makes them more popular amongst thematic collectors as you can more easily see the designs. Being a commemorative issue they won't issue smaller versions.

If you have been selling on another site the only way you can transfer items to trademe is to copy and paste each thing separately. That means doing each scan and each lot of text separately. You will find heaps more buyers on trademe so the effort will be worthwhile especially if you have something more unusual. Good luck.

Then you are deliberately miss-leading a buyer and your name will soon be mud! best policy is always to be open as possible about the condition of an item. If you know it has a fault then say so and then a buyer won't return it for that fault.

Its for my whole collection at approx cat value (i wish) Or you can ask me to list a set of stamps from 1984-2003 at face value for you to purchase. Trade me is on my back about it will probably be removed.

Question for specialist regarding QE booklets CP lists price for booklets and panes inverted wm or normal. But does not list for booklets with panes still attached this would mean there are 12+ varieties for each booklet issue ie 123 normal 4 inverted 124 normal 3 inverted etc until you get the booklet with all four panes inverted WM. Why are these not true varieties?

Another Question What is the difference between a photo proof and a Die proof? Whats worth more and how do you tell the difference?

thornton2006 - 2012-03-28 09:22:00
3969

Sorry I have not heard of a Photo Proof (but this may be an essay ?)An essay is the original Drawing submitted to be approved for the stamp design. But to the best of my recollection a Die Proof is a proof taken from a single Die,then the next step is a Roller Die this is a intermediary Die used to transfer a image from the master Die to the plate. This is done as many times as required to form a Sheet. Plate Proofs are taken from the complete plate. Some times Colour proofs are the next stage then when everyone is satisfied then the mass production begins.
Joliffe,Hausburgh and presentation sets are not proofs they are reproductions.Pre production Die proofs are singular and can be found on card and paper with or without value and are printed in black. Die proof prints command more money than the final printing.I stand to be corrected by those who are more knowledgeable than I on the subject as this is by no means a field that I have much experience with.

Stamp production in the old days was a very complicated and long process.First the submitted essays from which the winning design is chosen, then the engraver, then the original proof. The next step was the approval, next the hardening of the Die then the transfer to the plate. The rest is history.

Put in TM General but prob could do with some airing here too:

And Up Postage goes again

Standard post cost increases for Letters from 60c to 70c as from 1 July 2012, papers are reporting. The excuse this time is apparently lack of volume ;-)

Do Post think that by penalising all who may use *their* system with increased costs that is going to do anything aside from encouraging less volume ? ;-)

The history of standard post mail costs:

1987 through to July 1991 40c
1991 through to 2 Oct 1995 45c
1995 through to Apr 2004 40c
2004 through to Apr 2007 45c +12.5%
2007 through to Jul 2010 50c +11.11%
2010 through to Jun 2012 60c +20%
From 1 Jul 2012 70c +16.66%

Increase between pre Apr 2004 to after Jul 2012: + 75.00%

sounds like some good head in the sand economics of cost-plus and slug the poor sod at the bottom of the paying end going on ;-)

The issue with Post Costs is that the volume of posted items is declining. Especially letters which are disappearing into emails.
And more and more parcels are being handled by couriers in a (very) competitive environment.
We should be happy that the parcel market is well looked after.
Letters costs go up - that is a side effect of big changes in how we commumicate.

Get a grip guys. Cheers Peter

I have such narrow collecting fields that sometimes I have to buy a whole collection for one stamp ,what I sell on Trademe is Chaff and feeds the habit to buy the ones that I want.

I have couple of those limited edition 50 stamp silver foil booklets. They are both mint but one has a very poor strike of the silver limited edition number. Does this happen often. Or does it just fall off easily. can i put scans of it up some where.

Silver foil by its nature can sometimes fail to stick to stamp surface properly. its normally applied by thermography which is the addition of heat I also have a few of these booklets. i think from memory some 10,000 were done so they are not so scarce. far scarcer are the earlier scenic stamps with the silver foil on them.

Its the 3000 issued larger booklet. So no price difference for these poor strikes then. Would it be considered damaged (less than mint) should i just use it for postage? The poor strike is on the booklet cover not the stamps themselves.

I was told the decimal values of the last Life Insurance stamp sets are still valid as postage - is that correct ?

Any help here please.

Yes I believe so as I have had letters sent to me in recent years that have used Life Insurance stamps for postage.

Government Life stamps are actually still postally valid. The only problem is that they can only be used on the following conditions. By a staff member of the NZ Government Life Office and on mail bearing an identifer of that office. ie Official Government Life stationery.
I have seen Govt life stamps used various times in the past and this has always been illegal usage. Real Aotearoa in Auckland sometime seem to accept them but this doesn't happen in Christchurch. You might get away with using them but make no mistake you shouldn't be using them and you run the risk of having your mail delayed and then returned to you by NZ post.

Government Life stamps did also have one way that members of the public could use them. This was on first day of issue and only on this one day. That was a special concession written into the Post office guide.

Incidentally, Tower Corp which took over NZ Government Life in the 1990's also inherited the Government Life Reference Collection which Govt. Life exhibiited several times. This collection is now housed in Christchurch at the Philatelic Centre in Mandeville st where it is being carefully looked after (or curated) by the Christchurch Philatelic society. NZ post's reference collection of course is being looked after by Te papa while the Canterbury museum has the famous Rhodes Collection of New Zealand stamps containing some 700 imperf and 700 perforated Full face Queens including many of New Zealand's rarest items. I believe Te Papa also houses the Pigeon Post Collection formed by Jim Kilgour while the philatelic Foundation Christchurch also has a superb Pigeon Post reference Collection. There are other reference collections in public museums etc around the country. It would be interesting to know what others ones people know about.
