A surprise issue of a CAL happened at the CPS 100th Anniversary Exhibition when the 100 people at the Awards function all were given a special R.F.Scott CAL FDC. This 60c CAL featuring an artistic image of Scott is a completely different CAL to the one previously issued showing the Scott Statue.

Re the above CAL's, we were told at the dinner that only the 100 used at the dinner would be issued. I have not yet clarified if it will feature in the CAL pack for 2012 of not.

Re CPS Exhibition CAL's, the 100 on cards at the dinner are the only cancelled on the first day. The exhibition organisers however are now selling them mint at $2 each.

It does not look like the Scott dinner CAL is in the 2011 pack, On the nz post collectors site they show the covers for last year, But things do change there.

agree and like this- someone worked out NZM issued over 10.000 between 2004 and 2011 -and the value of them is good compared with NZ POST,although no one as yet has produced a priced catalogue, they must improve a little now-esp the mint booklets, and i will continue to try and fill gaps in printing series

A lot do not rate these, for some reason.
because its a different beginning.
if you look at old stamps their was a massive quantity and dealers over
the years hoarded, and now the market is alright for good. but these modern nzm. are a new market. and say 77,000 red boys sold and 110,000 blue boys, in 1931. ?
which makes me wonder what some of scarce nzm will be worth---

I have my late hubby's Stamp Collection to deal with and I don't know where to start. There are folders of countries from around the world, a box of health stamps and first day covers, alot of loose stamps plus books of mint stamps that he ordered from NZ Post. I try to google some of the health stamps and first day covers but got so confused that I gave up. Help what should I do. Any and all help would be appreciated. Cheers :-)

I think it depends on how much you want to sell for actual value. If you are not too worried then have a think about offering it up on: 'Antiques & Collectibles/ Stamps/ New Zealand/ Collections,' choosing a reserve. If getting a fair value is important then you may want an appraisal first or seel to a dealer. If it's all too much for now but you do want a fair price, box it up and approach it later when you feeling more up to it.

These "Stamps" are cancelled with a datestamp that includes the words "Acussi Ambeno" which is the separate enclave in West Timor that was/has been administered by East Timor. Bruce has for many years (over 30) been responsible for promoting Acussi Ambeno stamps.
They appear to be on a FDC that was originally printed for use with the NZ 1975 Forest parks stamp set.

Probably because the spelling is "Occussi-Ambeno". Or, more correctly, "Oecusse-Ambeno", in East Timor. (was this deliberate?)
I think Bruce (who will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong) started these back in the 1970's.
Years ago I bought the "archives" of the Occussi-Ambeno Philatelic Bureau, which was run by a group in an "alternative living" commune at Waitati, outside Dunedin. It was a fascinating insight to this group.

Around 1977 they improved the quality of the production, and produced full colour thematics, such as sailing ships and Royal Jubilee. Large numbers were apparently sold to German new issue dealers.

These phantom/cinderella stamps are fun. But you don't have to collect them if you don't like them.

Take it to a local Stamp Dealer and get an appraisal. They will let you know at an educated glance if you have something or not. Most Dealers will not charge for a quick appraisal but more thorough appraisal will cost. Let your fingers do the walking Google and the yellow pages are your friends.

Great advice- however make sure you have more than one appraisal

Hi Murray,
Personally for a quick appraisal only I would only go for the one but if wanting to sell, yes get at least two Dealers give a buying price.
The reason I point this out is that if they are getting a specialized appraisal for insurance purposes they will have to pay twice.

NZ post opened a new Post Shop in the Christchurch CBD on Friday 3rd February (Yesterday) in what is called "Container City". Their postmark in use however incorrectly calls it Cashell Mall while the office is called Container City. on top of this mistake they also couldn't spell the name Cashel and incorrectly gave it two L's so their datestamp says Cashell. What a faux pas!

A general comment. last night the Christchurch Philatelic Society held their monthly meeting and the main talk and display was given by noted stamp dealer John Mowbray from Otaki. The topic was forgeries and fakes and concentrated on NZ stamps and was based on the reference collection that Mowbray's have formed of items which have been declared forgeries by various expert committees, mostly the Royal NZ philatelic society. One aspect of his talk was that only certificates issued by the most appropriate authority should be used and that certificates need to be relatively modern (say within 10 years) as techniques both to forge and to detect forgeries have improved over the years. The display was backed with perhaps 500 assorted forgeries collected over the past 30 or so years.. i was interested in John's comments that they will never offer a forgery for sale even as a forgery. It is a shame that others don't adopt this sensible action.

If your questions relate to the "Queen Mary 2" then I can state that the vessel has more than one Captain. It was built in France and originally flagged in the UK but (since 1st December 2011) now flagged in Bermuda. A ship doesn't have a country of origin. Transported goods do.

I missed the boat because the vessel which sank off the Italian coast wasn't Italian. It was operated by Costa Cruises, owned by US-based Carnival Group. So its an American ship but the Captain in charge at the time was an italian.
