morning ladies :) Had a quick peek at Knitting Paradise but I need more time to peruse it so have it book marked.

Raining here thank goodness, it's needed badly. It will be a perfect day to knit or stitch :). I finished another 'block' for my blanket last night so that makes three now. I'm thinking I may need around 12 but will see how I go. I can't spread it out on the double bed as son's stuff is all over it lol so am using our queen sized bed as a rough guide. Then I know for sure it will fit a double.

happy knitting :)

I registered at Knitting Paradise but it wouldn't let me look at the pictures - they were all blocked. No idea why.

Today it's not raining here for a change! Maybe it will dry out enough so I can mow the lawns in a day or so - not that I have a burning desire to do so.

Must be something in the water carolev - I couldn't sleep either. I read till 1am and then was awake again at 3am and got up at 5am.

I started a second cupcake tea cosy yesterday afternoon and discovered when I'd finished the first side that I'd used the wrong size needles so it has turned out smaller - never mind, not all tea pots are created equal eh?

Still can't decide how to make my next blanket. I have several lots of mohair or mohair/mix yarns and some pure wool. I'd like to do one for my son, but he doesn't like wool - not exactly allergic to it, just doesn't like the feel of it and I don't have sufficient acrylic in suitable colours to do one for him. I have plenty of acrylic, but it's all odd balls and mostly pretty colours - not manly enough. Decisions, decisions. I really don't want to do a deramores order until I've whittled away at the stash. Maybe I should just list some of the mohair stuff. When in doubt do nowt.

I can't believe I've been up so long - it feels like it's time for an afternoon nap.

Better have some breakfast.

Have a super day everyone.

PS, Well done on the order for dolls dresses carolev

Morning everyone.. Wet and humid here.. the part of summer I detest.
Not good re grandson Carole. I hope he learns an important lesson out of it. Congrats on the dress order.
Will have a look at the Knitters paradise at lunchtime.
Ill be the odd one out, I slept well last night lol

Will be putting the superhero together today. Then will post on Tuesday with the fairy. I think Ill concentrate on the blanket alone then. And get that done quickly.
I have two people wanting fairy's so will do them next , may even knit them at the same time.
Should be picking beans and black berries this morning too, will have to hope for a break in the rain lol

Thinking of surprising MrP. Hes been so miserable lately that I know a visit to the cemetery to see his Mum will make him feel better. Shes at Hamilton/Newstead do they call it , at the crematorium anyway. ?
Thought we could got down see her and have lunch at the lake, then visit Spotlight since theres one in the area.
It will be a big day for him being in the car so long but I think it will cheer him up.
And I wont tell him where we are going. My stepfather used to tell us at breakfast to be ready within a certain length of time and we went on a Tikitour. We never knew where we were going. Went to New Plymouth for a day once. from here lol.
HAve a productive day on the needles and hooks.

Sounds like a plan popeye. We call it Newstead.. The morning started off damp but the sun is now peeping through.
I need to focus on housework for a wee while but will knit one row first. I have 159 stitches on and about 40 rows still to do, :)

ETA...At about 4 minutes per row.

what a lovely idea popeye :), it's been raining here so watch the roads as they will be greasy. The café at the lake is lovely and makes a good coffee :) or even a picnic would be nice too. Lots to see there with the playground and people out and about.

I've had two good solid hours stitching and feel like I am making headway. The part I'm doing now has lots of half stitches so is being stitched quite quickly. Not so many quarter stitches either, yayyyy!

MrK is making our son a wooden chopping board... omg it looks awesome so far! He is putting a different coloured curvy stripe through the middle. Might have to find an outlet (here on TM maybe?) for him to sell them at some stage. He is having a lot of fun experimenting with shape, colour and size - a lot like us with our crafts :). Am so glad he has something to keep him busy - he would go bonkers otherwise (and I would too lol).

happy knitting :)

It wont be for a few more weeks yet. Going to save a bit to pay for petrol and spotlight. But I know he will enjoy himself.
He was talking to his big brother this morning and I asked him to ask if his brother could remember their mothers birthday. Neither could, although they feel that early April some time. So Ill do some detective work around the rellies I have on FB and if it is early April we will go then and take flowers.
The chopping board sounds good Kiwimade. I have a few that MrP made me. He cannot do anything like that now he just shakes soo much. TV is his life now.
LOL GMS Im not the only one that times herself. Its a habit Ive always done.
Along with keeping records of what Ive made over the year.
Ive sewn up the Heros body and feet. Wil stuff them and I should get him finished today since there's not a lot of parts to him. Will post him and the Fairy off on Tuesday.
We have blue sky now and it doesn't feel so humid.

popeye333 - 2014-02-08 12:21:00
3758

I don't really keep recorda but I am very time conscious, although I no longer wear a watch. I never thought that would happen either. It comes from being a bus driver for 37 years.

I have a couple of bread boards that my Mum painted around the edges many years ago, wreaths of flours. I treasure them but do use them.
I wish Pasue has something to do, that held his interest other than sitting whistling and singing songs out of tune with made- up words.
can you tell I am a little grumpy atm ?

I probably need to get back to my knitting.:)

grandmasue1 - 2014-02-08 15:24:00
3759

I don't wear a watch now either. but like you GMS I always keep Time in my mind. I feel I have achieved something if I know what Ive been doing over time.
I cannot stand being late for anything. Id rather be an hour early than a minute late. And have found often with clinic appointments especially you can often be seen early and leave before your appointment time.
Lol at Pasue whistling out of tune. MrP used to do the same. But when mum was here he stopped yay.
I find I get grumpy when I feel like all Im doing is things for MrP and the Bobcat. I often wonder why it is he doesn't ask if Id like my hair brushed or neck rubbed.
Ive done the body, feet and undies on the Hero. have his arms ready to attach.. have sewn an N on the chest, Im not greatly impressed with but then Im picky on my own work. So only have to sew up the head. Attach the ears and nose, then his Hair. Probably be the morning when I finish him cos I don't fancy sewing black in the evening no matter how good my light is lol.
Trying a new toy out tonight, I got a potato ricer from the oppy yesterday. so I will give it a whirl for tea time. Im hoping I like what it does cos Mashing tatties on my stupid arm isn't good at times.
Have fun ladies

Hi everyone just found this - hope you don't mind me joining in? This caught my eye "I reckon you can never have too much wool either" I couldn't agree more! I've been knitting since I was 4 ( in a few days I'll be 21 x 2 + 1 ) and about 20 years ago learnt to spin my own yarn. I see a lot of you make toys, I love knitting them and putting all the little bits together and there you are a neat toy/gift not made in China :)

Welcome retro-handcraft. I'll make this brief 'cos I'm using a borrowed iPad and for a touch typist this is painfully slow. I'm supposed to be tidying and vacuuming my sewing but just wanted to see how good the wifi is here 'cos I'm downstairs from the modem.

Fantastic day here, 31degrees down on the waterfront!

Anyone with any sense would be away on holiday on their yacht, don't you think?

hi there retro-handcraft :) Welcome to the thread. We do basically yack about knitting lol but often about life's little whimsies too.

I've been knitting since my Nana taught me when I was seven (I'm 50 this year... eeekkk lol). I did put my needles down for a while as life got too busy with the kids and sick husband but now we have our first grandchild, am knitting like crazy for her. I also sew and embroider and am teaching myself stumpwork.

My 'mission' is to finish my unfinished projects (hence I am cross stitching lol) and to use my wool/yarn stash.

happy knitting :)

I knit for my little business and I'm always jumping for one cool idea to another! I also have 3 children + hubby makes 4, love gardening and work part time in photography sooo many things to do so little time!

Just realised I have about 5 ufo's.

Stumpwork? Is that done with a chainsaw? There is a nicely weathered on on SH1 just before you leave Cambridge . Probably close on 7 years old now.

Hi Retro...
Think I was about 9ish when I learnt to knit.Nearly 40 years since I started. Argghhh lol
First thing was what we called a Gonk. Was little toy that was in the back of one of the old Patons bazaar books mum had.
I have been making toys for the last 25 years (Oh how I hate talking in multiple Decades) lol.
Am currently putting together and Alan Dart Pattern for a superhero. Its going well.
Ive got a Nanas hope chest building up... I don't have kids son wont ever have grandies lol... But theres always babies somewhere that I can give them too.
Id be too scared to have no wool in the house lol..

popeye333 - 2014-02-08 18:19:00
3767

lol GMS, I know that stump, it's the tree that got bowled over in the tornado years ago and the guy chainsawed it into a tui :).

Stumpwork is 3D embroidery using wire to make some parts of your embroidery stand out. You also use beads, applique and other techniques to give the 3D effect. It's a new challenge but so far I'm enjoying it.

My new hobby when I make time to do it will be the loom knitting.

But I keep getting orders so the looms sit unloved as yet

Glad I don't work, Id never have time to do anything new

you people who have been knitting for 40 years are just babies - my mum taught me when I was about 5 so that's 60 years ago, and nana taught me to crochet even earlier than that.

Well my lovely kind friend brought our tea round for us this afternoon - a lovely chicken salad which she called "chicken Acapulco". Sadly she didn't phone to say she was coming, I was sitting out on the back deck, Mr K was in the family room watching the sevens, with the tv up just about as loud as it would go as he's quite deaf, and we didn't hear her. She phoned my cellphone which was in the office charging and so we didn't hear that either. She left a message then went all the way home again. I didn't get the message until I checked to see if the phone was charged, so I called her, and we met half way. She was going to come back, but I couldn't let her do that, and she didn't want me away from the house too long leaving Mr K on his own. The dish was absolutely yummy. I've never had it before and I can see I'll have to get the recipe.

Gorgeous evening here. Almost feels like summer (after the rubbish weather we've had the last three days)

Im thinking I may be the baby of the group, Just. Im 49 in May. Kiwimade beats me by a year.
41 was the target birthday in our family as Dad my sister and brother all died between 38 and 40. Im looking forward to being 50. Not many say that lol.
Well I wont get this head done if I stay on the comp. I can do the fleshy part and leave the black for tomorrow.

Have a good night everyone

Hello everyone :)

I have been lurking in this thread for a few months now. I love knitting and would love to join in this thread. I love seeing the pictures of what you have all been knitting and creating.

I have been posting in Parenting for many years but there doesn't seem to be many knitters over there.

At the moment, I am knitting beanies for the kids. I am on my last of 5 beanies. These ones are knitted in acrylic and they can wear them playing outside or in the garden.

I have some pure wool which I will knit them some nice beanies to wear out and about. I will also be knitting the girls some fingerless mittens and leg warmers to match. The boys want me to knit them another vest and another beanie, so that is my plans for the next little while.

I have 5 kids aged from 10-4.5yrs. I also homeschool 4 of 5 kids. I also love getting out in the vege garden, so that keeps me pretty busy.

Welcome to the thread rabrad. We're a friendly bunch in here and although some of us waffle on about gardens, boats, health problems etc we are mainly focused on knitting/crochet - and reading what you've just posted, I'm surprised you have time to knit, so well done. Sounds like you're doing an amazing job. I must be honest, when I look back I wonder how I ever managed to hold down a full time job, help my ex-husband with our business (as in physically help and do all the bookwork) and look after the house, garden and 3 teenagers (I only have two myself but for three years we had his nephew living with us), so I had my son 15, my daughter 14 and the ex-nephew 13. What a handful. And I still used to find time to travel round the country attending motocross meetings with my son, and used to do lots of knitting, crochet and sewing. Oh and studying at university too - although I only did that for one year and decided it was just too stressful - I felt I was being pulled in too many directions, so I never did finish my degree. I've managed without it this far, I'll not miss it now.

Thanks kuaka.

I do sometimes wonder how on earth I make it through some days but I have wonderful helpful children and not only do they do their fair share but they make all the hard work worth it.

We have two biological children and 2 permanent foster children and we have adopted their baby sister, who has been with us from birth.

Our vege garden is pretty huge and provides us with most of our vege. It is a family effort. The kids love it and are always planting seeds in the hothouse or helping putting new seedlings in the ground.

Thanks for the welcome. I will definitely be posting some pics soon :)

Now I know what stumpwork is ...lol.
I went past the Tui 10 times a day because I drove the bus between Cambridge and Hamilton for 37 years .

I have been knitting about 60 years too. I had a lot of earache as a kid and used to love knitting just one bootee at a time. My Mum introduced patterns too me as a secret code.
Welcome *rabrad* I have homesohooled grandkids. It is something I would have quite enjoyed.

I bet ya I'll be 43 on the 12th Feb ;) My grandfather ( dad's side ) died of a heart attack aged 26 and I'm born on the same day as him so my 26th birthday I was a wee bit worried but am still here :) Happy knitting everyone I'm using up bits of pure wool in a stripe jacket - what are you all knitting right now?

I might just be the baby. I am 39 tomorrow.

I have been knitting since I was 10ish. I do remember knitting my first jersey at 15yrs. I knitted it in mohair. It was a gorgeous jersey and then some lovely person decided they liked it better and took it.

My mum taught me how to knit. My older girls keep asking me to teach them but I keep putting it off because I am not sure I have the patience for it.

I only knit. I have never learnt to crochet and I can't sew to save my life (no matter how hard I try).

Thanks everyone for the warm welcomes. I have been wanting to post for some time but was a bit too chicken.

Grandmasue1, does you daughter post in the homeschooling thread? I am pretty sure I have seen your name posted in parenting the odd time. If I have the right person. I have met your daughter and I have her on Facebook. She is a really lovely person.

I used to occasionally post in parenting and the homeschool/unschool thread but decided that daughter needed her own space to vent.
I would be really surprised if she popped in here :) although she is my only daughter that can knit but she seldom does.
I have struggled to teach Miss 10 GD to knit and although she tries hard I just haven't managed but I did buy her a rug making kit that completed.

morning ladies :) Happy birthday rabrad, I hope you are being spoilt today!

Another gorgeous day, I have tomatoes to freeze and beans to pick, quick tidy up. As much as I love our son being home, he can be messy lol.

I took our net curtains down in the lounge last night as they had perished. One minute they were fine, the next they had a big rip in them. I might just cheat and buy some ready mades but for now, we'll have nothing up. Doesn't matter as we are in the country so no nosey neighbours. It's quite nice to sit and see the whole of the back garden and not have the view blocked.

managed to get a good chunk of stitching done and a bit more of my crochet blanket in the evening. I am probably about a quarter of the way through this quarter of the pattern if that makes sense. I found another cross stitch pattern with the fabric and thread all good to go I was going to do for me (yep, for me!) waaaaayyy back in 2005. Does that count as a UFO? lol. Hasn't been started yet! Luckily, I still like it so will start it when I have finished this dragon. I've decided to keep both stitching and knitting/crochet on the go now I can't see well enough in the evenings to stitch.

My stash is slowly but surely going down, think I will have enough yarn/wool to make a single blanket too. Am determined to use it all in one way or another. Have a few patterns I want to knit up for Maddy too lol, so hopefully this destashing won't be a loosing battle.

Happy knitting :)

welcome all newbies

Kuaka you can get an earphone thing that plugs into the TV so people can have it on "normal" volume and the hard of hearing can have it as loud as they like - my elderly aunt had one which saved the sanity of anyone else in the house.

The first thing I remember knitting was at 7yrs olld a bootee for my baby sister - didn't get the second one finished and a bit late now as the 'baby' is 60 now.

Like you kiwimade I am slowly getting through my stash but not sure how long that will last but am staying away from wool shops at the moment. Have been given wool for slippers so will need to do some before the weather turns cold as I felt them and they take ages to dry if done in winter.

Morning everyone. And welcome Rabrad and Happy birthday.
Lots of busy peoples.
Its a weird feeling to know you have outlived parents or grandparent eh Retro. but Bring on 50 next year. Theres only 3 of us left from a family of five kids and parents. My next up brother is 51 now. And I ma twin with a brother.
Im finishing off the super hero today. Just have to do his face stitching, and put his ears and hair on. Then I can concentrate on a green and lemon peggy square blankets for my friend to give to one of her friends sister.
I showed pics in general last week of a fairy I just did and two people from general want one each so Ill make those and list them.
Then I have this really Ugly doll to make. The fairy superhero and the ugly doll are all going to my SIL for her grandkids. Glad I wont have to see the ugly one ever again lol
We didn't plant a garden this year. MrP is 67 and his body is stuffed and frankly I have enough to do without adding gardening to it. And Ive never been that keen anyway lol. And dirt gives me excma. but the scarlet runner beans grew again so Ive been freezing half a bucket every 3-4 day or so. Love beans.
Looks like it will stay fine so I best get some washing out.

Have a good day everyone

Happy knitting :)

Thanks for the kind Birthday wishes.

I have had a pretty good day. Sadly the daily grind still carries on and washing needs to be done and kids need to be fed.

DH and the kids have been great. They have made a cake and the kids have showered me with lots of homemade cards, banners and decorations.

I haven't done much in the way of knitting today, it's been pretty warm but I am sure I will do some later after the kids are in bed and it's a bit cooler.

Great to see that you have had a good birthday Rabrad - things made by children are so special compared with just randomly buying something.

Dull, damp day here today but I did get my training walk in and as I am training for Wellington I guess there is a fairly high chance of it being wet and/or windy so better get used to all sorts of weather.

Using up part balls of wool on a 10stitch blanket, don't like having too many leftover bits of wool hanging around.

morning, what a allfull night but now on round 7 for blanket, busy day today , got to take better 1/2 bomb for a wof and friends sewing machine for repair .will not be sewing today as old eyes are sore and head is spinning, see you all later

morning ladies :) Think I'll have a tidy up in the garden, some of it is finishing for summer so time to think about autum and start collecting seeds of my favourite plants for spring. I was given some cuttings of a gorgeous wee pale pink fushia so have that in a glass of water. Hopefully it will take root and I can pot it up. Will keep it inside over winter and plant out after the frosts. My salvias need a good cut back and roses need deheading. Always something to do, at least the weeds are under control now. It has taken years to manage the weeds.

I'll get some stitching done today, am on a roll lol. Didn't get any crocheting done last evening, was just too hot. Hamilton had the country's high yesterday and we are always a couple of degrees hotter here (or colder in the winter). Was just too hot to bother.

Morning Ladies... Looks like another nice day. Was warm here but I coped. One thing Im thankfull for is crocheting small squares isn't as hot as doing a blanket in one piece. Managed 8 squares yesterday. Ive got to do one more this morning then I can put 3 rows together.
Friend is going to visit mum and baby on Saturday, so Ill put every effort in to have it done for her to take. Will be pushing it I think. but worth trying.
Yes I have roses to deadhead too but usually do them in the evening.

The hives are back. I felt them coming on after tea last night. This time theres nothing I can think of that could have set them off. So back on antihistamines and calamine lotion. Need to get a bulk bottle lol.

I have a cross stitch kit I must get done for me at some stage. Its of Bamboo. But my eyes cannot cope with it now. I don't know why Im still hanging on to the books I have really, but the thought was that the patterns can be put onto knitting.

Lawn boys due this morning ,

Have a fab day everyone.
