I need some advice on storing my stamp collection while overseas. belongings are going into a storage unit. I assume cardboard boxes would be fine for them , but should I use a sealed plastic container instead?

alston - 2011-12-04 10:27:00

if you have valuable items in your collection ,a bank deposit box would ,i think be a better option (if not you need to decide if the storage unit would be a safe option )banks can be difficult to break into however a storage unit is subject to all sorts of hazards ,fire, theft, gone broke and your goods seized etc
what length of time your away for are also factors

gandalff4 - 2011-12-04 12:31:00

hadn't considered that option , thankyou, away a year, and yes, there are some valuable stamps but not a huge amount. It was more of a worry having them all damaged in some way by the atmosphere/surroundings.
Thanks for your help :)

Here is a link to the American Philatelic Society which has an in depth section on looking after and storing stamps. http://www.stamps.org/DisplayPage.aspx?id=Preservation-and-C
are
They advise to use acid free storage boxes or boxes made from fluted polypropylene. Their advise is also to avoid corrugated card board boxes. So this would apply to using a bank deposit box as well.

I have been using fluted polypropylene boxed especially made for Stockcards for over twenty years and see little wear or tear. Of course careful handling should be commonsense. Such fruit boxes are discarded by large shopping outlets for customers to use for packing..
You would still have the moisture in the air to counter when packing. Seal in dry weather in high humidity you can cause a miniature warmhouse effect - sweating.

Best tip is to give to a friend for safe keeping or a trusty stamp dealer.

Another suspicious 2d "stars error". 429106939. The splodges of ink making up the "2d" look like some kid's printing set.

Shouldn't such a item be bought with a certificate ?

Does anyone take notes of these 'suspicious' items offered on this site - who sells, who buys or is the price still too low ?

Like any superb 'rarity' that I may bid on, I would like to know the ultimate price if outbid and who eventually got the item - afterall the wheels do turn !

Auction 429106939 Reputable trader with a money back guarantee.
Not a problem if not genuine.

You mean, it's fine to sell fake stuff, so long as it comes with a money-back guarantee? Nice to know the high standards in the philatelic industry.

With these rare overprints (and other scarce varieties subject to fakes, such as roulette FFQ's), the onus should be on the seller to prove that it is genuine, and not on the buyer to disprove. And this one, to me, looks just as suspicious as the one last week. As far as reputation, all I know is that the trader is one of the biggest dealers on TM. I know nothing about their standing in the philatelic community, or qualifications or ability to correctly identify this overprint.

The only difference that I see is that last week's seller was a small-time collector. With several dealers making noise last week, silence this week, one wonders what the real motivation is: protecting unsuspecting buyers from probably fake material, or protecting the market for dealers.

Should there not be a culture to have such material certified ?.
Heck, were I to purchase dubious material I would insist on an item that was fairly recently certified. a certified item surely is worth its salt, not just a pulled out of pocket price.
On the other side, selling a certified item warrants the pound of flesh but manifests seller confidence.
Of course experienced collectors may easily see the differences but these stamps uncrtified do not stay with one owner as we see.

Sorry but Craig is not a dealer he is a Trader ,stamp collector. The problem here is getting facts right on both sides.Saying too much of the wrong thing can get one into trouble as in sabotaging another's auctions etc etc That is what question time is for ask questions ?One you don't have to ask is does he guarantee the stamp and if not satisfied will you get your money back. His word is good enough for me and I am not a Dealer. If you have problems with the Auction then get in touch with Trademe .Tell them of your expertise in this area and your credentials and I am sure they will respond in a positive manner.

I do stand to be corrected but I think that Don is a foremost authority on the Bayne Forgeries as they originally came from Rotorua in the 1960's,and we do have to be careful in that even in the original (genuine) printings not every overprint was perfect. Is everyone prepared to pay another $95.00 on top of the price for a Royal Certificate?

Hi donaldo, Could you expertise a stamp and issue a certificate ?

Or is it a case only certificates from the Federation Expertisers are recognised ?

Hi Don .
Any difference between your certificate and one issued by the Royal?
Can anyone in that case issue a certificate? eg dealers and knowledgeable collectors?

You are on the right track as there looks to be a lot of common ones and the bidders will set the price.
