Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Have some of the 1500 actually been held back for release in post shops on April 7th? Regardless, I reckon the thing to do is sell 'em if you got 'em while the market is hot, especially right in the afterglow following the visit.

Got an apparent type b 1960 Washington quarter. It has the widened gap between the 'E' and 'S' in States, the leaf over the arrow tips, the well defined tail and pointy right wing. It also has the malrotation between the obverse and reverse.

It's in a PCGS slab but not identified as a type b, but I guess that could be missed. Photos to follow.

Especially given the small number of seconds that the slabbers get to identify, seal and label each item before moving on to the next.

Its good to see the Royal Numismatic Society of New Zealand's July convention and coin/banknote fair (in Wellington) being advertised at the top of the TradeMe pages. Hopefully this will entice more collectors to get out and get more involved with this great hobby/addiction. Supporting such events is beneficial to all. The society can be a great place to meet decent people with the same interests (plus the odd crazy) and the more enthuisiasts there are the more your collection is likely to rise in overall value.

Something odd in the pic with the "gold coins" - if the 200 yuan is 27 mm and the sov 22 mm, the two coins in the bottom row can't both be right - quarter eagle should be 18 mm and half-sov 20 mm?

Yeah, these bulk lots may have some treasures, but many are a whole lot of trash. If people can't take good pix, I won't be bidding.

It looks like it, and I see one of the bidders asked that very question. But the obverses are all Geo VI (d. 1952), so they'd have to be 1939. Maybe just an artefact of the lighting.

Anything that old will be British. Condition will go a long way towards potential value. If you google "Tony Clayton UK coin values" you can find some helpful info about insurance replacement values. If you get half that on here, you've done well.

Apologies if this is the wrong thread, I have a Q on an early NZ banknote...
I discovered a £50 Lafave in fairly good nick, it has a couple of creases and a pinhole, in a relative's money box. (Together with hundreds of early NZ & foreign silver coins and smaller Lafave denominations,)
Would my relative get a better price for the £50 at numismatic auction than listing on TM?
And when/where are these auctions.

Good find - can you post a photo (preferably) or let us know the serial no. pse? Mowbrays does an annual auction in Sep/Oct - you could always enquire there, anyway.

Very nice Lefeaux fifty pound. Noble Numismatics in Sydney has an auction in July which usually features good New Zealand banknotes. They had an auction a few weeks ago which you can see online for more information. Noble.com.au

I understand they want to phase them out, if they haven't done so already (believe there's something in the latest Focus newsletter out today, but haven't seen it yet). A good opportunity for collectors to voice their concerns, and maybe put forward some ideas to help them produce them more economically, perhaps? (Getting small numbers done at a totally different mint using different dies on blanks of a different alloy to the circulating coins probably isn't the most efficient approach, nor does it meet the basic requirement for BU examples of our circulating coins each year ...)

Thanks, I checked Focus and you're absolutely right. They've discontinued the Brilliant Uncirculated sets and the Proof Set will no longer automatically include the Annual Coin, instead they'll go with whatever is important for that year. Which is why they've got the Achilles coin, rather than a bird in this years set.

A couple of the refiners here in Auckland, if you could get access would be a winner

Still plenty of fines and nuggets coming out of the Queenstown/Arrowtown areas. Invest in some good camoflage clothing, some hidden GPS tracking chips in the other successful fossickers backpacks and you should be getting a good payday lol.
