It would depend on the era of the FDCs and how common they are. If they are around 1970s & 1980s this might be too much but could be OK if they are newer or older. Some of the 1950s & 60s FDC aren't worth much either except if they have a more unusual cachet (the picture on the side of the FDC). Condition makes a big difference to the price too. See if you can find similar lots sold in the expired auctions as this would help you.

i would advise you to go and see a local Stamp dealer and pick their brains and in turn learn something as Fiscals can be tricky to identify in some cases and can mean the difference of a one dollar stamp being worth hundreds.Local Dealers will be in the yellow pages or google.

i have been sorting through my grandfather's stamp collection and want to list some of them but have zero knowledge of philatelic type stuff. just to get me started please could somebody help me describe these stamps, condition and proper 'title' etc for a trademe listing. i think they are called 'arms postal fiscals' ?

http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/6/168438306_full.jpg

any help would be greatly appreciated :)

1931 Arms then Condition as Unhinged mint , hinged mint ,Mint no gum.
Cat Value is high on these UHM approx $900.00.Not that you will get that on Trademe. If UHM I would start at around the $300.00 mark.If hinged mint $200.00.I stand to be corrected.
Regards Paul.

Hi Could some one tell me what strength is the best in a magnifying glass for looking for faults on stamps, if you go over the10x strength does it just get harder to see the details?
Thanks

I use a 2x magnifier with a small 4x magnifier attached to the lens, this is normally sufficient for most print faults. If needed I also use an electronic microscope attached to the computer that also doubles as a camera.
All can be acquired on Trademe.

Hello everyone, Im wondering what is the stamp market like in NZ now, my mother was an avid stamp collector in the 70s and still has her entire large collection, she is wanting to sell now shes in her late 70s, should she sell the entire collection or split up the collection into groups and or single stamps?
Is there still interest in stamp collecting as it was in past decades ?
any info would be appreciated, Thanks, Shaun.

Quick money take to Dealers get quotes from more than one .Be prepared to be disappointed in overall value of the collection especially the decimals ,used in general are worth bugger all and mint you would be very lucky to get face value normally anywhere from 50 to 70% of face.Older stamps pre decimal pre 1935 would be the money stamps ,all depends on condition.Contact Stamp clubs ,societies ,dealers ,pick brains take your time split it up..
(this does not include overseas stamps as they are not my thing).
Knowledge is King.
Regards Paul.

Hi, bit confused about some 1985, 24c stamps with a tram being pulled by a horse. Two have a pink background and one dosn't. The red on the tram and the lady's dress is about the same on all three but the 24c and New Zealand at the top of the odd one is less red looking. I assume the pink background is how they ought to all look?

ecat8 - 2011-05-14 22:24:00
3235

The pink background is the normal stamp,
My immediate thought is that the missing background is a changeling.Put one of your "normal" stamps in direct sunlight for a few weeks and see if it duplicates the abnormal Stamp.
Some printings and colours are more susceptible to this process and yours may be one of them.

rebel58 - 2011-05-15 08:40:00
3236

That's a good idea rebel58. I tried scanning them but all came out with no pink background so maybe there is something up with that pink ink? Thought perhaps the ink had run out in the printing machine but they print from the top of the sheet down don't they?

Ahh, King Edward VIII, no wonder I couldn't work it out. Was sure he didn't look like either of the Georges and had no idea there was another king in between them.
Thanks thunderstorm.

I have fond recollections of our phone conversations about 'philatelic stuff'. Our conversations darted from topic to topic - a genuine interest in local philatelic history. There are few 'old style dealers' left
It is many years since the passing of Ruby but they are together again now.

Yes - I'm still offering $1,000 just to SEE a complete sheet of either Red or Blue boys, in private hands. I believe they must exist somewhere.
