Hi, I have 2 questions.
First, what is the best way to mount and store my collection?
So far i have been making custom pages with the stamp information, printing them on A4, mounting the stamp using a stamp strip mount then slipping the page into a plastic sleeve and into the album, is this ok? The album stands upright on the book shelf.

2nd question, I want to start to collect the auckland exibition stamps from 1913, sites say beware of forgers, How can i be sure that a stamp i buy is genuine? are there tell tale signs?

Thank you

Any ideas why the postage on this tiny stamp would be so much? I don't want to ask in case they black list me for being difficult....but $1.35 for one stamp?

Beggars can't be choosers. And I am an amatuer and don't really know any better! Its a pretty old stamp so, I'd assume it would not be in the best condition.

Hi, I need some help please. Hubby has just said I can sell his nz stamp collection. Don't know where to start. First album starts at 1855 full faced queens used. Is there a good catalogue I can get and how do I work out what price to sell at. Is it better to sell single stamps or collections? Sorry for all the questions. Hope someone can point me in the right direction. TIA.

Hi bitus there doesn't seem to be many peeps around at the moment to answer questions. Have you googled to see if there is a stamp club near you. They may be able to help.
As for me well I found an online catalogue and printed out the page on 1855 FFQ and now I am more confused. Hubby has 7 out of the 8 but the stamp pictures are wrong. Eg the 1d red is blue!!!??? If anyone knows of a good online catolougue could they please put up a link for me. Thanks.

Hi Donaldo, Thanks for your help, much appreciated. Wiish I could get my hubby to retire. He was very fastidious and has lots of albums. But he gave up collecting nz stamps years ago and has lost interest now. I just have to find time to list them.

I have a question regarding watermarks I have a stamp that looks to have the imprint of a star on it but you can only see it on the rear and I am just wondering if perhaps this is a watermark? How do you tell if a stamp has a watermark?

If it is New Zealand you cant go past Campbell Paterson ,expensive approx $180.00.Other than that go to your local library and look for Stanley Gibbons World wide catalogs .

Most early Stamps have a watermark that vary from year to year, printers, country's etc. Some are easy to find mainly face down against a black background.Other methods include soaking in lighter fluid against Black background (good for mint stamps as will not damage gum),holding up to bright light, and various detectors manual and electric.
Best options is to join a stamp club ,society and or seek out a stamp dealer.

You could do worse than books like MacKay's Stamps & Stamp Collecting, item 367213515. There are other general guides, but not too many very recent ones. Stanley Gibbons published a similar large format one by James Watson some years back, that's reasonably common - most libraries probably have a copy.

Heres a question I have to get a photo but I have a stamp its one of the imperforated first face queens the yellow one it is well centred and its used but you can hardly see the postal mark its faded of course but not too badly however there is a small segment missing at the bottom left hand corner. Is it still worth a lot or does that missing corner drop the value right down?

The 4d yellow came perforated and not Imperf. So more than likely it has been trimmed and virtually worthless,in saying that it could be an accidental Imperf (very rare). This came by when the perf machine broke down and they cut up the sheet with cutting implements.

its value is one penny i guess its supposed to look red or orange but looks yellowish to me i guess its just because it has faded over time but you can still see everything clearly. The bit that has been taken off it is a small triangular section and you can still see all the letters. It is one of the original imperfs my mother had it well before I was even thought of.When she asked about the missing corner she was told that is how one of the postal workers cut them.I remember she took her stamps to a dealer around 5 years ago and he was interested in buying it from her but said that because of the missing corner he would only give her $30 for it.She said no because she thought it was worth more.I am just wondering if it would be because I seen an old pigeon stamp with a huge chunk out of it doing ok at an auction on here.

Things have changed in the stamp marketplace in 5 years. The dealer would have sold the stamp for around $60.00 but today he/she wouldn't give you anymore than $10.00(based on your description and not seeing the back and front of the stamp). You would get anywhere from$10 to $30 on Trademe at the moment.

It isn't that stamps aren't selling well it is that they are realizing more realistic values. The stamp dealers in the past have been able to regulate the prices but with the coming of age of the Internet eg Trademe. the market has opened up,not to take anything away from Dealers they have a valuable knowledge base and tend to sell better items with guarantees..The better quality stamps(rare, low printings etc) are getting top dollar and are a good investment A lot of the stamps you see on trademe are not top quality eg not centered blunt/pulled perfs, heavy postmarks, tears ,thins ,marks ,tone.fading, scuffing etc others are very common hundreds of thousands/millions printed.Knowledge is king so my advice is talk with other stamp collectors, dealers ,attend stamp exhibitions/fairs.
Regards
Paul.

perhaps, but they are showing an important part of history.its nice just to collect for the beauty of the things and whatever i collect will go to my children eventually.but just out of curiosity just how do you know what will be a good investment in the future is it rarity or are there certain trends that never change

You have to go way back in time to find your Investment stamps eg early NZ stamps mostly pre 1935.Exceptionable quality well centered.full gum, full margins ,rarity's eg low print #'s plate blocks for the same, print flaws eg missperfs, colour shifts ,die cracks, the list goes on.Most miniature sheets ,first day covers are not a good investment(remember most not all) Once again Knowledge is King join a society visit Stamp Dealers ask them questions get on mailing lists for auction catalogs,Google is your friend.Don't use the magpie theory ,if it is shiny buy it.Because it is shiny doesn't mean it is valuable both gold and a bottle cap can shine,
But if you are collecting for the sake of collecting you are doing well and keep it up ,Involve your children as stamps are an excellent teaching tool.If they like cars ,birds trains horses, flowers ,triangles etc then start collecting for them or you on a theme.

re OPSO.
These are catalogued at around $2500 for a fine used stamp.
However I believe there are quite a few forgeries around so it would pay to get an expert to check it.

Ok thanks, sorry to be a pain, but how about this one:
I have two stamps that I'm trying to get the value of... I don't have any pics, but one is green with a queen's head facing left and has a value of five shillings. The post mark says 17.JA24. The other one is exactly the same, but purple and has a value of twelve shillings and six pence on it. They are both "tall" stamps.

More than likely 1882 Queen Victoria Duty Stamps the 5/- postal use value $45 fiscal $1.The 12/6d Fiscal used $30 postal use $35,000
