What's the diameter, just out of curiosity? Weight, too, if you have electronic scales handy.

Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the
same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

I was lucky enough to sell a couple of these on commission 10-12 years ago, when the US dollar was worth a bit more than it is now.

Later than i thought ... Stacks & Bowers Baltimore auction June 2012 ... cheers

I understood he was unwell but got no reply from my emails so gave him the benefit of the doubt as he was still visiting TradeMe.
Luckily I resold the first coin he bid on again and it sold for more than he bid, so I guess that was OK.

Yes, all good here. Already started back at work on Monday, still have to put finishing touches on new joinery in kitchen and we are up to our elbows repainting the outside of the house. It's mostly just a question of priorities.....

Coin listed on TM at the moment is a Sudan 20 piastres (KM 26). Just curious looking up the date in Krause and I see it was issued in AH 1312/12, 1312/16, 1313/13, 1315/8 and 1315/12. I thought those dates worked out in AD terms as 1906, 1910, 1908, 1905 and 1909.

Does an expert (Martin?) know why they would chop and change the AH date and regnal date when it was all the same ruler?

Also why would these be listed in the 1801 to 1900 edition when they are all 20th century?

As I understand it, the Sudanese coins don't quite follow the same pattern as the Egyptian/Turkish coins that we are more familiar with. The four-digit date is the "real" date rather than an accession date (the ruler in question started out in AH 1302, so 1313 is year 12 - give or take a bit for odd months here and there - which keeps them in the 19th century still; his reign ended in AH 1316, i.e. yr 16). The non-matching variants are probably down to shoddy local workmanship, at a guess. Production quality is pretty rough and quite high denominations are in base metal, so there is a bit of circumstantial evidence, I guess.

Anyone know why prices in Krause for NZ tradesmens tokens are so high for relatively common ones eg Premier says NZ$40 for VF Milner & Thompson while my version of Krause says US$150!!!!

How old is your version of Krause? I tried to bring the KM prices into line with the Premier ones two or three years ago, though whether they actioned them all, or transcribed the figures correctly, is anyone's guess.

So what is the two digit date/number?

The two-digit number is still a regnal year, but it runs in parallel with the actual date, even though they are bollocksed up a little in reality. In an ideal world they would run 1302/1, 1303/2, 1304/3, 1305/4 through to 1316/15, but as you've seen they are all over the place.

You could check the current KM database price of the M&T token at the Numismaster website, though I'm not sure what limits there are on details for free access.

I've got the 6th here - what was the KM number of the token you were looking at? I was supposed to have got a free 'contributor copy' of the latest edition but it never showed up so not sure what the latest details are.
