I was just trying to help you with my original answer. I'm pleased it helped with your lot description. i was amused however that after asking advice on what they were worth and getting an informed answer that you should then go in your lot description and ask exactly the same question again. Did you want me or somebody else to waste time answering it again? Why waste our time asking the question twice? if you got good professional advice on what the item was worth why do you then ignore this advice and set a much higher starting price? if you know better than people who have had a lifetime in the hobby then why bother asking others for advice if you ignore it. You are lucky to have advice and information given freely in this message board so please don't abuse it or those offering the asked for advice. Best wishes to all for the new year!

P.s. thanks for the addition to your lot description. Much appreciated.

You are right about that. for many years i had a half sheet of those stamps but as they didn't owe me anything I didn't worry and only brought them out if somebody asked if I had anything unusual of the first pictorial set. That usually resulted in another $16 sale of a block of 4 or if somebody was keen then a block of 10 for $40. I don't think I have a single block left now. Lets hope 2011 doesn't have any more earthquakes. My shop was closed again last week until Thursday because of Boxing Day quakes dropping bricks onto our arcade from neighbouring buildings. Our arcade had been brought up to date a year ago and hence suffered no problems itself but neighbouring buildings can cause hassles. We live in interesting times for sure!

BTW Real Aotearoa in Christchurch was also closed until late Thursday because of boxing day damage. they had lots of broken stuff on the floor as they also sell lots of crockery, glassware etc and despite special adhesive tape and other earthquake precautions they still had lots of breakages. Paul Wales of Classic stamps would be pleased he moved out of Hereford St when he did because his old building is now red stickered. i understand that Chalon stamps also had a large front window broken in boxing days quake.

I can tell you that Steven sold me those stamps you have got at $3.00 each 5 to 6 years ago so dealers do sell below stated prices(regular customer perhaps) .When you won them what did you pay?I cant recall.
12,000 stamps does not make a rarity but a full sheet maybe?
If you get the price you want then you will have set a new standard perhaps?
A stamp is only worth what a person is prepared to pay for it and this is after all an auction site.

lol well after you guys finish with me ill be lucky if i get 50 cents i cant recall what i paid but yes i guess 50 dollars would be a new standerd but like i said they seem rare as noone has posted this type or the other type for a while and i agree at the end of the day its worth what ever someone wants to pay i would have thought 50 dollars would be fair considering what else ive seen on trade me
I would class them as interesting ive seen the normal ones selling for around 20 dollars on trade me but all comments takin on board if any thing we added a interesting convo to this message board lol[/quote]

You have to remember that most collectors are simplified collectors wanting to fill a gap in their album so normally a specialised item will have a much smaller market and sometimes a lower price than a basic stamp. it is all about supply and demand when it comes to pricing. You are correct in that a plain MUH halfpenny green Mt. Cook stamp could sell for $20 but it doesn't follow that one with a scarce overprint will sell for more because there will be far fewer potential buyers. the overprint turns it into a different item.

Magyar stamps are from Hungary and Helvetia are from Switzerland.
It's just the name of their country in their own language.

can any give me some advice.i have got a boxed album of construction of shenzhen special economic zone.think it about 1980.has 30 stamps this is in very good order.also have japan hardback album from 1998 with all stamps from that year in mint condition.also have fdc from scottbase posted 9feb 1976 with 6 stamps 3c 4c 5c 8c 10c 18c.plus various fdc from magyar posta from early 60s.blonde question but where is magyarposta and helvetia.many thanks

The Chinese stamps I'd guess at $20 maximum, the Japanese year pack at $50 maximum(More likely $30 unless it includes the souvenir sheets as well), the Scott Base 1976 FDC you mention doesn't exist because it was issued in 1972 and is worth around $3 and as for the Hungarian FDC's it all depends on which ones but unlikely to be worth more than a few dollars and certainly hard to find a buyer.

Hi - I wonder if someone could help me. I am not a stamp collector, but during my big clean out ready to shift I have come across quite a few first day covers from the late 60s - early 70s. I remember my granddad sending these to my children. Are these covers of any value? Some random ones are Royal Visit 1970, Corso 1969, NZ Expo 70, Butterflies 1970, CWI 50th Anniversary 1971, Health stamps 1971, etc. Would be grateful for any help.

All those you mention are worth less than $1 each and hard to sell at that low level. Perhaps if you took a photo of a lot of them and put them up as one lot they might find a buyer.

Very popular at present. The best ones are those during WW11 with one year crossed out and another one added in but there are also other good ones. You really need to scan each page so people can see the year dates and the values in the book. the average type of book with say 200 to 300 stamps in will sell for around $100 but with scarcer ones the price can go up for the better book. As Don says list it and see!

thanks for that information kiwisteven - will think about what to do - as more like 600 stamps - some uncancelled - all kinds of values and some have the 1939 and 1940 stamping - too many pages to add to a listing so unsure what to do

Mention the years, take a random scan of each year and the total # of stamps, questions and answers will do the rest.

Hey Stamp Club Guru's!

Just a quick wee question that I was kinda hoping some one in here could help with . . .

I have been considering selling my GrandDads collection & have been looking through some of the stamps ( In a total blonde oooh thats a pretty one sorta way!) And . . .

Why do some of them have letters punched out with lil holes?

Thanks heaps if any one does happen to know. =)

They are either revenue stamps eg (duty paid) or Perfins eg(WC,VOC) etc.Best advice is to take them to a local dealer or stamp club and get an expert opinion on them.Google or the yellow pages are your friend, let your fingers do the walking as we are not allowed to give contact details on this Forum.
By no means a Blonde question.

Paul.

They can also be official or Government stamps with initials such as "O.S." "S.G." "G. N.S.W.","O.H.M.S.-
9; etc. Sometimes these perforated initials can increase the value of the stamp but not always.

Hi Can anyone out there help... I have been sorting heaps of USA stamps, for 3 years and am still finding the Washington's the most hard to identify. I have been a constant visitor to Ebay, just to try and match mine up to the ones selling on there. Can someone tell me what a ' jumbo' means. Is this a description used only on American stamps? Is it a larger stamp than normal, as some advertise stamps as Superb jumbo or Monster jumbo. Also would like to know what momen means when relating to stamps. Hope someone out there is much more knowledgeable than I regarding stamp matters. Thanks

Jumbo refers normally to stamps from so called "Jumbo" rolls which contain 500 or so stamps in one large roll. These are coil stamps so normally imperforate top and bottom. i have no idea what "Momen" means. perhaps you can give us what context this word is used in.
regards, Steven

momen... the word is used when folk are listing stamps to sell on Ebay.....
e.g. momen...US stamps 1916 invert used etc.. Thanks again

I have gone onto ebay to find out for you. The word "momen" is not actually a word. it is the name of the American company selling the stamps. Momen stamp co.

re USA coil stamps. there will be a way of tell if a stamp comes from a jumbo roll but this will depend on each particular stamp and to find out this you will need a specialised USA stamp catalogue such as Harris or Scott's. All good stamp clubs should have a Specialised USA catalogue and a few of the better city libraries.

If you have been sorting USA stamps for 3 years what catalogue have you been using so far? To be frank you need to get a decent catalogue and do this work yourself. otherwise go along to the Hastings or Napier stamps clubs which have lots of good reliable people in them and ask the President to recommend somebody local to act as a mentor for you.

I have for 3 years been borrowing from the library the 2005 editions of Stanley Gibbons. Then a couple of years ago I purchased a 1997 Scott specialized catalogue of US Stamps from a dealer in Palmeston North. It is old I know, but at the time I was still working and only checking all the stamps I have as a part time interest. However I am now retired and have time to do much deeper research. I have in fact been to both the Napier and Hastings stamp clubs, but being very trusting and knowing very little about stamps, I took along some pages of mint stamps, and let folk look at them, only to find when I got home these pages were missing. I have also been ripped off by 2 other stamp people( one of whom is a member of Trade me and writes in the message board.) After seeing my stamps for sale on Trade me I rang him and he returned some of my stamps. So you see the reason I am requesting a TRUSTWORTHY person. I guess this was my own fault, as I was too trusting. Never mind and thanks for your help. We visit Christchurch periodically, so will hang on to them and visit you when we are next down your way, Cheers

I'm very sorry to hear of your bad experiences. I guess it is a real temptation for some people but i hope that the person concerned is now no longer a member of whichever club it was. there will always be cheats and thieves out there (some of whom are known) so I guess it pays not to place temptation in some people path.

the following free online Mystic USA Catalogue may be of use -- think they use Scott Catalog numbers too from our last look there:

further the earlier posting, the Mystic online USA catalogue does use Scott numbers and the catalogue covers up to end of 2009. the Dealer prices are in USD and are a guide only to what that dealer might be happy to sell at in USA.
