Hi all, I recently inherited my late father's NZ used stamp collection. It is pretty complete between 1935 and 2000. I am wondering about trying to fill some of the early gaps and have been looking at sidefaces for sale here. It seems that the term "fine used" is can be interpreted fairly loosely ;)

Just a query about early stamps - are those with missing corners, poorly centered, and heavily cancelled considered "fine used"? Are rough perfs the norm for these stamps? Thanks

Second question - Are space fillers a waste of money? The above mentioned collection is missing all of the FFQs and all but 4 of the sidefaces. Between 1898 and 1935 only 15 stamps are missing (not counting fiscals, postage dues, lighthouses and arms which he obviously ignored as they are all missing)

Unfortunately Fine used has different meanings to different persons.Your best bet is talk to local dealers, collectors maybe join a local stamp collectors club or go to a meeting and pick brains.Generally fine used is a minimal but identifiable postmark (for the correct issue period of the stamp)the stamp should be well centered, all perfs intact. No bends or thins. BUT!!! some stamps eg:-- the 2/- & 5/- 1874 1st Sidefaces are more often more collectible with a dirty great obliterater cancel as they are then more than likely postally used.Reason being as they for more than often used as fiscals collectors would clean them and then cancel them with a nice coin cancel to look pretty and get max $$$$ value .These are forgeries.Perfs depended on different printings ,the printer, broken pins etc.Rough perfs ,clean perfs, double perfs ,triple perfs, repaired perfs eg:-- perf 12.5 over perf 10,it all goes on.Space fillers ?It depends on how many $$$ you have to spend the difference between a couple of $$ to thousands in some cases. In the end it is up to you it is your collection and you have to live with it and it is up to you on how picky you want to be,have fun.
Regards Paul.

Hi Paul, thanks for all that. Excuse my ignorance - by "used as fiscals" do you mean stamps used as payment for something other than postage?

My father spent quite a lot of time choosing individual stamps for his collection. All of the stamps in the collection have light cancellations. I guess to keep the collection consistent I will have to fork out for finer copies.

Thanks again. Appreciate yoour thoughts.

Sorry to put this here (and its not an auction promo!) but I have listed an item in 'Antiques>Woodenware>-
;pre 1900' which is an antique stamp box. I really didn't know where to list this, but for serious collectors this is a real rarity. Item #326973551. I bought it as a stamp collector but there is no suitable category in the stamps listing section. Cheers

New Christmas Stamps - I think the new Christmas stamps are disappointing too. Another issue that just rehashes old designs. Is it because many stamps now seem to be designed by advertising companies? Interestingly the Niue Christmas stamps issued at the same time are lovely. What do others think?

Considering the Xmas stamps are commemorating fifty years of Xmas issues, I suppose they aren't too bad although not a patch on other issues.
The rugby stamps are drab and disappointing.
Still far too many needless issues just to bring in more money.
The only post-2000 issues I collect are Xmas and Health although I do collect FDCs and miniature sheets.

Does anyone know the value of British Football World Cup Stamps from 1966 ? Aparently there are 'unnamed' ones, in a relatives collection, and we dont know where to find the value.

Muzz and Don please read carefully this is copy and pasted from the above mentioned Auction .Farraway is a great trader and I have dealt with him on numerous occasions as you both may have done .There is a fine line sometimes between ruining another's Auction by creating suspicion (and Don in his experienced opinion could not state if it was genuine or not and was asking everyone else theirs)I take from this that Don therefore is not as experienced as you make out?

Why did Don not ask the question on the Auction itself?
And give the seller a chance to respond?Although the questions had already been answered in the Auction description as below.
Guaranteed genuine CTO error.

Items described as accuratly as possible. If for some reason I mis-describe or incorrectly identify an item then I will guarantee your money back.

Murray I am in agreement however with your overall concerns with the Forgeries and I have here somewhere details on how to identify the forgeries and would gladly Email them to you if you would like me to.

1935 Pictorial.
I presume you mean the 9d overprinted in black.
Campbell Paterson catalogues the stamp with two black bars at $1000 unhinged mint.

hiya everyone, we have inherited two volumes pf pitcairn island stamps, my partners late grandfathers collection. we are wanting to sell them however, havent found alot of interest really. they would probably mean the world to someone, and its sad that they just sit unappreciated in a drawer. is there anybody who would give them a home? i would be willing to start an auction, just that my partner is concerned of price.

Re Pitcairn Islands.
I believe Pacific Island stamps are fairly popular in NZ.
See if your library or local stamp club has a catalogue you can borrow.
This will give you an idea of what they are worth.
However, you will probably only get about 25% of the catalogue value if you sell them unless they are scarce.

I've never found Pitcairn Island too hard to sell although issues from 1970 to 1985 period are quite common. If you have a collection of Pitcairn Island stamps issued from the 1990's onwards I'd certainly be a starter. also if you have any items postally sent from the island rather than philatelic First day covers then you should have no problem selling them. condition of course also comes into it.

TOKELAU iSLANDS.

Has anyone ever seen any genuine mail from the Tokelaus? In all the years I've been in the stamp trade (Over 40 years) I've never seen anything that looks like genuine mail and so i wonder if anyone has ever seen any. Does it exist?

Value of Decimal NZ material.

I asked a trader on here why he is selling his material (mainly Decimal FDCs) at full catalogue price.
He said that is because it's what they are worth.
I think he is way 'off the mark'.
What do others think this stuff is worth?

CTO material.

I notice that some traders are selling CTO material as 'very fine used' when it has never gone through the post.
Genuine high value 'fine used' stamps ($1 face or more) from about 1990 onwards are very hard to obtain.
Some stamps are probably worth more than they are unhinged mint.
What do others think of this practice?

35% - 40% if lucky unless scarce

the hard lesson that will be learned is that most prob wont sell @ full cat

have seen one or two postal items in over 45 years, but mainly commercial items sent from there to export companies, you're right though genuine items from the Tokelau's are not often seen..
