From memory, yes - Victorian silver and gold coins were "inverted" in that way till 1887, though copper wasn't, for some reason.

Yes that is the way they are

Coin orientation usually has the images on the coin exactly opposite to each other. Medal orientation generally has them oriented the same way. As mentioned, this was randomly applied with British coins. Maybe it's more consistently applied in the US?

Either way, as I was looking through my token spread of British coins, I discovered that the coppers are indeed medal orientation and the silver ones are coin orientation, with the exception of an 1840 groat, which is silver but has a medal orientation. And actually I have an 1806 Half Penny that is coin orientation.

Any thoughts out there?

You're right about the silver Britannia 4d - that seems to have been an exception, possibly to distinguish it from the silver 3d, which was the same diameter (!), and also possibly also because it was originally intended for Colonial use rather than domestic. The 1806 ½d sounds an oddity - I think they were meant to be medal rotation.

Hey guys I have a quick question... Can you still take your old coins/notes to the bank to exchange them for the new coins etc? I have just come across nearly $100 worth of loose change etc....

As I understand it, all notes are still legal tender so you can either spend or bank them without any legal issues (convincing some traders that they're OK might be another issue, though). The older coins will only be taken by the Reserve Bank now.

Believe so. Check their website and contact them to see if there are any other options, perhaps (e.g. any other entities that may act as an agency, you never know).

sorry guys- newby again- what does the term BU mean and what is the differance to UNC- Murray

BU is "Brilliant Uncirculated" - full original lustre, no flaws whatsoever, a perfect example. UNC is "original state with no wear" but this still allows for minor marks (bag marks) from the mass manufacturing process - clunking together on a conveyor belt and dropping into bank bags, for instance. In my book, bag marks should still be identified up front all the same.

I think I paid $40 for a "new" (old stock) copy in about 1990 so I could imagine it going well. They don't turn up that often.
