Please have a look at my "mixed bag" auction. Is it really worth what the bidders are offering? I'm getting quite concerned I've inadvertently misrepresented the collection. Out of curiosity, and to put my mild anxiety to rest - what is in there, that is pushing the price so high?

Please note that no matter what, I will not interfere with the auction process. Cheers.

Sunken, no misrepresentation apparent on your behalf. However my curiosity is also piqued.

The two lead bidders don't appear to be big coin buyers judging by feedbacks.I can hardly make out what is on offer from the pics lol. Once the money is in your account cleared and you have sent the items away, ask them what they saw in the pics that other dealers and collectors have missed.

Hi Peter, yes a few coin sales but not that many lol.
Have asked a Q on the boxed English Crown for a date, but other than that can only see $350 to $400 tops in what is shown

Yes, I had anticipated more questions possibly... But thanks to everyone for your feedback, will be 'interesting' to see how it finishes.

The "tourist dollars" appear to have been made by Bob Gillam. The bulk of his commemorative medals, made in 1989-91, measure 45/46mm and are listed in the "MacMaster" catalogue. He seems to have mixed and matched the dies for his medals and tourist dollars quite a bit. I recently acquired one with the "TAUPO" reverse of MM1990/11, but instead of the "Sesqui" obverse (or the "NZ Map" and 1840/1990 obverse, discovered after publication), it has the Tourist Dollar design with a map and a Maori carved fishhook to the right, which sounds like it matches the type above. Being a "tourist dollar" it isn't listed in the catalogue as a medal, but it's clearly a related type. The smaller 30mm tourist dollars were listed in an NZNJ article by Ray Hargreaves in 2005.

Made my day! What was the original start price/BN before being lowered to the much more reasonable $1800?

When I looked earlier it was $2000. Has to be a Christmas bargain or maybe they're crackers.

Pattern Coin as in a trial strike coin

Yes, trial pieces. Some French/French colonial Essais seem to have been released onto the market, though, so they may not be quite as scarce as those from other areas.

Yes, French "essai" pieces are indeed trials. From what I know, it is usually cut into the die, or perhaps stamped in after to denote that it is not a circulation strike, though some will have doubtless gotten into circulation. Some are considerably rarer than others. There's an acute dearth of them in my French collection.

Linguistic note: In French "essayer" is the infinitive for "to try". "Essai" is, from memory, a noun form of the word.

A forgery (probably Chinese) of a Spanish Colonial "piece of 8". There's so much wrong with it (colouring, metal, lettering style, spelling, date), it's hard to know where to start. RHILIPPVS should be PHILIPPVS, even though Charles III was King of Spain in 1781, not one of the Philips ...
