Every link I click on this page I get the following:

What links are you clicking on? I've just tried one of the image links on the previous page and it opened fine. 404 is a "page not found" error, which usually means the page has been taken down or there was a problem with the web address.

Supposedly PCGS-graded MS-62 gold coin removed from slab to be mounted as jewelry with a boatload of crap photos. The 70.8% feedback rating really inspires confidence. Not at all suss.

I'm sorry to advise collectors and friends that Tom Taylor-Young (previously Tom Upjohn) one of New Zealand's long standing Coin and Banknote (and Militaria ) dealers died last night suddenly of a heart attack at home in Christchurch. Tom and I had a business relationship for the past decade when he closed his own Christchurch shop and instead had me sell his stock via my shop, Shades Stamp Shop. regards to all Steven McLachlan.

Sad News, I recently went to his place and had some coins graded, he was very friendly as always, and had some amazing stories about his deals throughout the years. He looked very fit and was telling me about a tennis match he had with Cliff Richard at Hagley Park, He will be missed...

The latest John Bertrand catalogue will help - try a search for "New edition 2013 NZ coin+note catalogue", bearing in mind that catalogues show what you could expect to *pay* a dealer to buy coins, not what they will pay you for them :-)

Watching with interest. I hope the seller's handle is not an omen. Interesting that he seemed not to understand the request for a pic of the slab.

Hi Martin
The coin looks a little suspect in its "finished " state but pics can be deceicing .

Peter paid a good price for Mowbrays 1936 florin ,TM auction closed yesterday .

Well I have had no email or internet for last 12 days ,just back on last night.Have been just doing the basics at MacDonalds and a few other free wifi spots during that time and have missed plenty of good items during that time.Back with a view to win a few now, go gold, go silver and the coins. All the best,Alan

Does anyone else find it funny when people listing on Trademe have overinflated ideas of what their coins of worth - and seem to take sentimental value into account when pricing their listings

lbillows - 2013-11-19 22:10:00

ibillows: Calls to mind that episode of The Simpsons were Homer pawns Lisa's violin to Fat Tony. His valuation guy dismisses the collectable value, but says the sentimental value is through the roof.

So was he dobbed in for the simple (but obviously) incorrect valuation? I guess it must have been more complicated since it was presumably voluntarily withdrawn.

All this talk of "withdrawal" and "swords" would have Dr. Freud smirking.

Hi folks, got a bit of an odd one here that I just inherited, wondering if anyone knows anything about it. It’s the size of a penny, but made of aluminium and is from the British Aluminium Company Limited, 9 Victoria Street, London. One side looks like this: http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/full/293421156.jpg the other just has a big “283” stamped in the middle.

Looking online I found a few similar examples made by this company, but couldn’t find one quite like this. Anyone know anything about it, why it was made, what it was used for?

Haven't seen the items in question, but "never in circulation" sounds like a description of coins that were never released, i.e. prepared but withheld. I assume, like you, that he just means they are "uncirculated" in the strict sense of the word.

I haven't seen one like this before but my best call would be that it's an advertising token (or "ticket" as they used to call them). A promotional item that could be given out, or possibly even sneaked into circulation if it was the same size as a penny. The difference in weight and colour would draw attention to it, and the company would get its name, and the quality of its product, spread widely in the process.

Alternatively, if the numbers look to be hand-stamped with individual punches, it could be a tool check used to keep records of in-house tool movements among the workers. I've seen a couple of those lately but never in aluminium (though the nature of the company would dictate that one in this case, anyway!)

Is the value of coins going up?

That one's actually correct, as the 1968 coins were never released for circulation, just put out in mint sets for collectors.

Cheers Peter, you seem to have struck the right person at TM. I notice TM have allowed the same seller to relist the 1.1 million silver auction though. 667936219. I'm giving up notifying them, as this has been allowed to carry on for 9 days.

gammoner - 2013-11-28 21:47:00

Will be the same for the silver , they don't have it but could walk into my refinery and purchase the 1000kg silver in small bar form and pocket the $250,000-00 profit after hopefully sending it on to the buyer . The current auction lists 1kg and 3kg bars , well there are no 3kg manufactured bars in this world anyway. There are 3.11kg or 100 oz bars . Maybe someone can ask them to put up a pic of the 3kg bar and ask what refiners mint mark and weight is stamped to it.
