twilight, when you do your first go with darning foot, do up a "practice" piece. Say layer 2 bits of fabric and the batting, and then quilt it using a contrasting cotton. That way if it looks fab you can throw binding on it and hang it above your machine, if not you can slice into strips and use it as stuffing for a pillow :D (i have 1 of each)

Hi coalrange, as you suggested just dropped in to meet some more crazy people. Not raining here in sunny Auckland, just came back from taking the dog for a walk, lazy day today, no cooking, eating all the leftovers. Talking of cakes I have a husband who bakes, makes wonderful fruit cakes.

#2 daughter was just looking at the quilting i am doing and she said ooooh i would like 'spider webs' on my quilt - that could be fun :)

Franny i realise you were asking Liz where shes going :) she must still be packing........ she will be back to let us know otherwise we wont be able to wave to her :(

Twilight let us know how the sewing goes.
I can see a huge difference in mine already from when i started playing, one thing i read was relax you shoulders if they are not relaxed it will show in your work - it does too !!

coalrange1 - 2009-12-27 15:50:00

I have broken 3 needles today using the darning foot !!! i googled it and this is what im doing wrong - duh me - will be more careful :)here is a copy in case you do it Twilight, hopefully you dont :)

The most common problem when free-motion quilting - and often so subtle that it is not noticed - is that we push or pull the quilt sandwich as it feeds under the needle. When we do this, we pull/push the needle out of alignment, even the least little bit, and it hits the bobbin case and breaks. This practice also results in a distorted finished product with pulled stitching.

With practice it becomes easier to rather allow the quilt sandwich to feed itself under the needle. I know this sounds crazy, since the darning foot prevents the feed-dogs from feeding the fabric through, but when you get the feel of things, it really needs very little manipulation.

look at pic see the squiggly lines sewn all over the quilt - thats what we are trying to do, some patterns are gorgeous like butterflies or hearts or flowers all over the quilt but to start with we are trying simple stuff :)

Franny is a pro at this, Liz has done some and Twilight and i are just starting :)
