I reckon you can never have too much wool either

#Post
2601

I'm like you grandmasue, I buy what I need. I do have 'leftovers' though and will eventually turn them all into something :).

kiwimade64 - 2013-10-28 19:05:00

If possible I buy wool for a particular project and use up scraps as I go along - leftover DK I make into baby rugs used to be peggy squares but now doing a 10stitch, 4ply is made into baby beanies.

Well that is the theory but in practice I also can't go past a bargain in wool so I have quite a lot of projects being planned to fit the wool that I buy!

jayemtoo - 2013-10-28 19:16:00
2603

I knit beanies etc too, mainly for folk who have hair loss.
I dislike shopping so generally buy wool online for a specific project. I have never been good at browsing....as a very young child I was taken around the world and have lots of memories of sitting outside shops with my Dad crouching with his back against a pole entertaining small children while Mum shopped for bargains.
In more recent years I fell asleep sitting on a seat in a Market in Manilla while a friend shopped and some person fanned me with a bamboo fan because I had given them the equivalent of $2nz which was about half a days wages. They don't need woollies over there but I did teach a couple of ladies to knit strips of plastic grocery bags into stronger bags that they sold at the markets.

morning all. suns out BIRDS I hate them when the shit on your clean washing, they picked the biggest thing on the line too my king size top sheet. well suns out but boy shes cold. sat up knitting my blanket

carolev - 2013-10-29 06:52:00
2605

Same here carolev - suns shining but cold. I was quite surprised when I got up as I was so cosy in bed, and discovered his nibbs has the heat pump on. It was definitely warmer in bed and I could so easily have stayed there longer. Yesterday I did a lot of knitting as I decided it was time to have a day off and just relax (it was Labour day after all) so I did quite a bit on my next tunic, it's possum/merino and beautiful to knit. I think if I could afford it, I use nothing else (mind you I don't know how it washes). I'm past the armhole shaping on the back so making good progress. It won't be needed until next winter but at least I should have it finished by then.

Sorry Carolev but my gran used to say that "shitting luck is good luck". I wasn't impressed when we lived in our previous place and used to have ducks visit us most days. I used to feed them. One day I heard this strange "clacking" noise, looked round and here was a duck eating the cat food, so I chased it but instead of it going out the way it came in through the open door just off the kitchen, it went down the hall into our bedroom and flew round and round, there was duck poop everywhere, all over the duvet cover, the pillow cases, the valence, all over the dressing table and mirror, down the walls, the only things that escaped were the curtains and the carpet. I wouldn't have minded but I'd put clean bedding on that morning. Grrrrr. Took me two hours to clean up the mess.

Happy knitting everyone.

Morning everyone.
I call the birds, Loose Arsed at the mo.. I put it down to them building nests and laying eggs making things a bit looser. They must sit on the spouting above the car cos the bonnet cops it everyday. Along with the mossy stuff that's growing up there too, they drop that all over the car too.
Used to have swallows who would come under the porch roof and use that as their toilet too grrr.
Did a fair bit of knitting myself yesterday. Very Pleased. should finish this strip of blanket in the next day or so.
Bones are good this morning , so Ill get some housework done.

I wanted a sleep in this morning. Got up and did the rubbish bag for MrP to put out. Went back to bed. Mobile rang, a friends son rang me by mistake, tried to go back to sleep, courier arrived and needed singing for.. I gave up and got up lol

Have a fab day all

Do you have to sing to your courier popeye? I'd frighten mine away if I tried that. (sorry, couldn't resist)

I sign for mine no singing here, I keep the car inside so only get bird shit at supermakets with trees.

Morning ladies. Having my nails done this morning so no lie in for me.
Am trying to get 24 beaded christmas tree ornaments made for the beginning of December for a swap I'm involved in.
Will post a photo when i've returned.

morning ladies :) I've been outside early this morning and burned all (well most, it's still burning) the garden waste from over the weekend. Having a quick cuppa then I'll mow the lawns. Can only mow about two thirds as MrK has fertilised the front lawn and it can;t be mowed for a week. As if it doesn't grow enough! Then another 'go' at digging out the bears paw, then a shower and crashing for the rest of the day lol. It's too nice a day to be indoors today :).
Can't wait to see your Christmas ornaments whiskey :).
*leaves thread 'singing'* heheheehe

Oops see I was disturbed once too often this morning lol.. Signed for.. And being that I was in my nightie and no teeth messy hair I hope he got a fright. He stunk of smoke. I hid behind the curtain on the door and squiggled a scribble with my left hand. Im right handed lol.

What colour are the nails now Whiskey? Cant wait to see the Ornaments too.
Its lovely here now too. We did have a quick shower of heavyish rain.

Haven't got near the wool crafts as yet. Went and got MrPs insulin, and got a new bath mat for the toilet. The old one, which isn't terribly old leaves horrible marks on the floor. So its scrubbed clean now and the shower mat has big sucky things on the back. its scallop shells with orange detail.
Also got a basket to put my knitting in. Just a wee one. I have one for the crochet so now have one each. Less mess too.

Getting a little impatient, I cant wait for the stuff to be gone from the office so I can transform it into the craft room. Hurry Up school lol

Have a good afternoon everyone.. tra-la-la-la lol

*kuaka* I have several possum/merino items that I love wearing. I macine wash with wool mix on a wool cycles and dry flat and they seem to keep there shape and don't pill at all. I feel that they are a long term investment.
My kids are lining up to inherit them.

grandmasue1 - 2013-10-29 14:44:00
2613

grandmasue that's good to know. I think the one I'm doing at the moment says "hand wash only" but I handwash most of my handknitted anyway, some of the bought ones I do in the machine. I'm just loving the way this particular one is knitting up and it feels absolutely gorgeous. Going to sit now and have a cup of tea and do a few rows, tea is organised, I've got a cake in the oven, didn't do any gardening, but went for a long walk and then wasted money on groceries (money that could have been spent on possum/merino if we didn't have to eat!) so now I'm going to have half an hour of "me" time.

morning ladies, I have a sick pussy this morning but last time she went to the vet it cost $150 so can't afford to go again as we don't get paid till tomorrow . she's our old one 18 years not the bird catcher one, been up early knitting , got hospital this morning to get my feet done, nothing major then home to sew/knit relaxes , what a hard life being a old aged pensioner

Morning everyone...
Whiskey love your nails and the decorations... You are very clever.

Ohh Carole, not good re the old girlcat. Millie was 12 when she became diabetic and we just couldn't afford to pay for the insulin. So we decided it was better and kinder for her to have her forever sleep... 9 months now and it feels like yesterday.
Lol I know what you mean about an OAP.. I might not be older but its days like today that Im glad I don't work. Ive got one of my warfarin flat battery days. Just don't have the energy to do anything. so I will sit and work on my blankets. I don't feel unwell, just flat and need to recharge my batteries.
Lovely day out
Have a good day everyone

morning ladies :) gorgeous beadwork whiskey and I wish I didn't bite my nails so I could have pretty polish too.
Not good about puss carole, maybe call the vet and explain and say you could pay tomorrow but could they see puss today? Our vet lets us do that :).
Done a few bits and bobs around the house this morning and been to the library. Just having a cuppa then I'm having a go at digging out this damed bears paw. Everytime I went to do it yesterday, MrK needed help with something lol. But, in saying that, we did get a nasty vine taken out and all the garden waste from the weekend burned. It's clouding over so it shouldn't be too hot digging. Summer must be on the way though as I've noticed my arms are getting browner with all this outside work.
Got some knitting done yesterday too, about a third of the way up the second and last strip for this throw. Will be glad to get it done and then I can do more on the 'owl' blanket I started in whanganui. I've bought another crochet hook as I'll need it for the edges of the throw anyway. Can't wait to get my hooks back lol - that will teach me to leave them behind.
Happy knitting :)

morning girls and stalkers spend last night knitting this darn blanket taking so long each row now, one number 9 around, I would like to learn how to crochet,

carolev - 2013-10-31 07:28:00
2619

morning! Back outside shortly for me until it rains :) as it's nice and cool for digging (yep, still at it lol).
Am now a little over a third of the way through the second and last strip for this throw. Doesn't help that the Furry One still likes to run off with my yarn - yes I know it is soft but it's NOT yours to run off with! He just loves soft, squishy things lol, such a wuss.
Carol, have you looked on You Tube for tutorials? You can stop/start the video and learn at your own pace :)
Happy knitting :)

Morning Ladies..
Taking a while to get around the crochet blanket now too Carole. Its going to be at least a single size I think, judging on the wool usage.
The stitch I generally use Ive always known as a treble. but from what I saw online the other day its a double crochet. so Im hoping to see a lady in the supermarket this morning and Ill ask if she crochets. Otherwise I will put a card on the notice board.
The you tube tutorials are good, but I only need to be shown the stitches and names. I can do 3 diff ones. m wondering if we call stitches different things here.

Kiwimade Im lucky, I have been a meany mummy when it comes to my wool. Both the furrbabies were taught young not to touch it. And they gave up trying to get it.
Bob wont touch anything if I tell him not too... hes a smart boy that one. Hard to believe he will be 9yrs on Nov 6th cos he still acts like a kitten. And even tho hes a huge boy he can still get on the top of the 8 foot fence and can fly over the shorter one.

Shopping today, wish we didn't have to eat lol, we would all be much richer lol

I better get dressed, MrP is ahead of me this morning lol

Have a good day

popeye333 - 2013-10-31 08:37:00
2621

popeye - I call what you're doing a treble because I learned used UK terms, the Americans use different terms. I get totally confused if I try to follow a pattern written in US terms. I know they are different and I start off okay, and then suddenly my brain goes dead and if it says double, I do a double, but the Americans call a double a single (I think). A lot of the patterns on the internet are written in US terms. I avoid them like the plague.

Very overcast here this morning, but warmer than yesterday. I spent some time in the garden planting scartlet runners and purple king beans. Not an easy job as I was squashed in between the bean frame and the silverbeet and spinach, the back of my neck got a bit sunburnt and of course my back is aching. I only have about 8 rows to do on the back of my new possum/merino tunic. I washed the other one yesterday and pulled it so that it is longer and not so wide. Be interesting to see what happens when I put it on, 'cos when I was wearing it, it seemed to stretch out and shrink shorter each time I wore it.

I am determined to finish this tunic and a pair of socks I'm doing (I've just turned the heel on the second sock) before I start anything else - we'll see how that works out!

Hope to get some more gardening done today - the whole place is overgrown, it's a bit of a mess, so I have to start putting some hours in out there. And then there is still my curtain waiting to be finished.

Have a great day everyone.

kuaka - 2013-10-31 09:01:00
2622

wooopppp!! lol... the bears paw is out lol. Phew, what a mission. Wasn't deep rooted just lots of it to get out. I've come in to do the dishes then back out to tidy up where we pulled the vine out and prepare the ground for my rootbound potted bay tree. Still overcast and no wind, just perfect for 'heavy duty' outside work.
I hate those American crochet patterns too kuaka and get confused by their terminology. I end up looking at the pictures lol and deciding what the stitch is from there - it's a strategy I teach kids when learning to read lol, look at the pictures for clues to the words. Nothing like going back to baiscs! I'll try and knit this afternoon.
happy knitting :)

kiwimade64 - 2013-10-31 09:36:00
2623

I only know a couple of crochet stitches but I call the stitch you are doing Popeye a treble too so we must be right eh? Get a bit annoyed that the Americans like to change terminology etc to suit themselves lol.

Overcast and quite a bit cooler this am - have already been out to take a child to school so now having a catch-up coffee and not rushing outside although still have quite a bit to do in the garden.
Reading all that you are doing Kuaka and Kiwimade may be enough to encourage me outside too you both seem to be so busy - good on you.

Have started another little top as using up left over wool but have two UFOs also which I really must get finished as they are to go to Australia.
Trouble is I can't read and sew up so these get put aside and another thing started until my conscience gets the better of me and just have to make time to finish things off.

jayemtoo - 2013-10-31 10:00:00
2624

The Americans haven't only changed the terminology, they changed the needle and hook sizes, they say "bind off" for knitting instead of cast off, there's lots of things they do differently. I find it a real pain sometimes.

kuaka - 2013-10-31 10:33:00
2625

Wow, Ok well Im going to stick with the consensous here. I asked one of the ladies in NW this morning , and showed her my blanket. she thought it was a double. so she obviously goes by American instructions.
When I have some spare time that I wont knit or crochet I will google and see what else I can learn.
I don't think I could wear possum wool. it would be way too hot for me. The thermals and merino I got this winter were lovely.

Im trying not to have any UFO's. Theres so much I want to do but I will carry on with my blanket, cos the sewing up is going to take a long time too. Just a few rows left on strip 7 now. And Ill keep going till the crochet one is done.
Then Ill probably have a tutu with different crochet stitches. Once I learn whats what, I might actually be able to learn to read a pattern.

Your right re looking at the pictures Kiwimade that's what got me all muddled yesterday lol.
I am going to endeavour to learn the circular needles too.. A friend of mine uses them for ordinary knitting too. I don't think Ive ever seen her use normal needles.

You are all so good getting into the garden. We need help, hoping our friends come up and help. He used to do our lawns and gardens but they moved. but they still come back to see his mother in the rest home. So we will pay him to clear the garden.

Have a good afternoon everyone

Yay found an excellent site with good clear instructions and clear pictures.

http://www.learn2knit.co.uk/crochet/basic-stitches.php

I didn't know or ever heard of a half treble.

I did know the slip stitch, double, and treble. But the others are easy enough to follow

Yay And thanks for the Tip re English over US instructions.

Yay the 7th strip is finished.. so have done a couple of rounds on the crochet blanket as well.
Its almost tropical here 24.4 inside. so I have had my little fan on, which I use a lot anyway cos I like cool air on my face, but its helped while I sit with a blanket over my legs.
Hopefully Ill get both blankets done before it gets too hot in the summer. I hate the heat.
Getting dark here so rain isn't far off.

morning all nice sunny day, knitting some lime green hug me tights for a wedding makes a change from 10 stitches . feeling none to good today bit of a tummy upset so might go back to bed and knitt

2631

sorry to hear that carolev - take care of yourself. popeye, it was cool here this morning (well 16 degrees so I put the heat pump on but it's nice and warm now). I've finished the back of my new tunic and started on the front, just about finished the mistake rib (of course I did make a mistake in it) and then I can start on the pattern. I think I may have stretched the other one a bit too much in the length, as when I held it up against me, it looks too long and narrow now, so hopefully when I put it on it will spread out a bit and shorten up. I remember now why I rarely knit for myself.

The sun has just gone into hiding, it's clouded over and looking like we may get another shower. Never mind. Apparently there is a complete fire ban on up here - earliest it's ever been according to the news last night.

Right, I have to sit and do a few rows of my tunic before I start on the rest of the days activities.

Happy knitting everyone.

morning ladies :)
jayemtoo, I need to be busy or I will go nuts. I miss working terribly and miss being in the classroom so I take out my frustration in the garden lol. It should look pretty darned good at this rate lol.
Just the silver spears to move (who on earth planted that in full sun??). I was going to dig the hole for it to move into first but MrK said dig it out first and then see what we can salvage. Makes sense I suppose.
Finally got some rain last night, omggg the ground was dry so it was needed.
Sorry to hear you aren't well carole, not good.
Will get some knitting done today, more than likely this afternoon. Kuaka, sounds like you are on a roll now :)
Popeye, I think it's a good thing to learn something new. The circular needles (magic loop) aren't that hard to manage. The only thing I find is I need the longer ones, the short ones just make my tension all skew-wiff for some reason.
Happy knitting :)

Morning everyone.. Warm here and was overnight. Looks lovely out at the mo tho. Think its meant to crap out again for the weekend.

Cant believe its November already. Where has the year gone?

I agree Kiwimade, its good to keep learning and makes the grey matter working too. I cannot handle what I call mental feebility so try to keep my mind working.
Carole not good your feeling grotty. I have to say Im a bit emotional for some reason today. and a bit hacked off with the body.. as classic case of The Mind saying Go Go Go and the back saying No No No. And knowing that its only going to get worse doesn't help.
I will sit and knit and crochet today. starting strip 8.. Getting closer and closer to the end. It will be the biggest and longest item I have made.
Looking at patterns the other day and came across a Starsky and Hutch Jacket. When I was 12 and sitting in hospital board out of my brains from having my tonsils out, mum brought the back of one she was knitting for me in. So 12 years old sitting knitting the jacket lol she did the colours of course lol. Lucky our tensions were similar .
They have just shaved Martin Taskers moustache off for Mo-vember, he looks better without it lol

Have a good day everyone

Had to get out of the house this morning.. so we went to Briscoes, they had a sale lol. got $145 worth of fryng pans and a waste paper basket for $32. Using the paper basket as an umbrella stand. Its white metal filigree.

Just put a bid on some wool... OOOPS. Have had it on my watchlist for ages so decided I was meant to have it this time.

Will have a wee play on here then get back to my knitting etc.

Ladies if you are looking for cheap acrylic 4 ply for blankets etc check out easy151 listings. She is selling it cheaper than the Asian shops that normally stock it. Some very pretty variegated ones too

morning ladies :) yep, you will miss her carole, they really do become part of the family.
Back outside today but need to get our bedroom windows cleaned first. Am slowly but surely working my way round the house in between garden and knitting time.
Almost half way up (or down, depending how you see it lol) the last strip for the throw. I just haven't had the time lately to just sit and knit but am getting there slowly. Once I hit halfway I think it grows quicker - but that could just be my imagination lol.
Happy knitting :)

kiwimade64 - 2013-11-02 08:06:00
2643

I think that's just your imagination kiwimade, just the same as we always think that when you're going somewhere by car, it always seems to take longer to get there than it does to get back - makes no sense if you travel the same way both directions.

I managed to do a cable wrong last night on the front of my tunic, didn't notice it till I'd done a couple more rows, so carefully dropped the stitches, twisted them the other way and then reknitted it. Have to examine it this morning to make sure it doesn't notice, otherwise I will have to unpick about 4 rows. Didn't do any more after that as I want to check it's okay before continuing.

Looks like a lovely day here, cool (heat pump is on again) but there is no sign of the rain they keep promising. Might have to do some more gardening, then maybe this afternoon I can do the hem on my curtain. I am sick of the "two-tone" look in the corner of the family room with a blue curtain on the bi-fold and a yellow one on the ranchslider.

Of course I will find time to knit too.

Sorry to hear about your cat Carolev - it's very sad. I cried for days when our "little rat" had to be pts when she was 17. We'd had her from a wee scrap of a kitten which my friend found dumped in the bush behind her house. Mr K said "you needn't think we are keeping THAT, it looks like a little rat" and she turned into a beautiful cat but "little rat" stuck for a name.

Have a great day everyone.

Morning everyone.
Carole I think once you see the shrug on a model you will find its fine. or if you think you can change something you will know. Hard when its just laying flat.
I vote for getting a new baby once you have had some heeling time. Id have liked to have got a kitten when Millie died in January, but as we already had another cat we didn't. but give yourself time.
so many industrious people in here , in the gardens. Ours is just getting worse. Need to get someone in to do it.
Im in a hole at the mo. Need motivation. But I have decided pain or not I need to get at least one job a day done, to help get out of the hole Im in.
not fond of November as its Birthdays for Mum, my sister and her son who have all died. So its gets hard at times. I still have my older brother whose birthday it is on Thursday, he was between my sister and mum.
But Im determined to climb out... Already planning in my head about the Christmas decoratons. I should have my craft room done before they go up of course.
We had a "tiny" cat when I was a kid. My eldest brother brought him home and he was tiny. Grew into a really big cat too. Sadly when we moved to the farm he thought possums were going to be good to play with. They weren't. but he was always called "Tiny"

Have a good day everyone

Tony has always called Penni Mae "kitten" even yesterday morning he said Kittens not well. when I first got her she was 6 weeks old and my then 2 year old grandson named her pe male becouse she was a little girl, he lived behind us but did not look after her well so she moved into our house like their other cats did too , the saddest thing is she was the last of our cats we brought from our frankton home the others have all passed now, Lucy was given to Tony 3 Christmas ago as a kitten but she's a outside cat that hates cuddles and Tony loves his pussy cuddles.

carolev - 2013-11-02 09:18:00

I must admit I miss having a cat too. When our old girl was PTS 18 months ago, it just wasn't the same. We tried having another cat but the Furry One had by then, caught and killed wild rabbits and thought the new cat was fair game too. It just got to the stage where we could not trust him with Maggie so our daughter took her. Now we see her when we visit our daughter and get the cuddles from her then. I really miss the purring - as much as I adore the Furry One, he just doesn't purr lol.
We now have another dog for the weekend :), my sister and dad are off to a wedding so we have her wee westie for the night. The Furry One is in seventh heaven and the two of them are charging round like crazy.
I've cleaned the leather lounge suite this morning - didn't realise just how grubby it had gotten over winter. Now to do the bedroom windows and then see how the rest of the day pans out. Should get some knitting done this afternoon :). MrK is doing an oil and air filter change in my car - yayyy lol. Much cheaper with him doing it. Just need him to show me how to do it in this car so I can do myself eventually.
Happy knitting :)

They leave big gaps in your life don't they. I know Bobcat has grown up a lot since he didn't have his sister to pick on. It wasn't nasty pick on he just wanted her to play with him. She was an old girl from when she was about 5 years old lol. Thought playing with a kitten was beneath her lol.

Feeling a bit brighter now. I tidied up the shoe rack, did I really need four pairs of crocs and 4 pairs of jandles there lol. Wiped some more skirting boards. Put recycles out, cleaned litter box and did some crochet.

Started the 3rd ball of variegated. I always work from the middle of the ball but talk about a massive birds nest in this one. Have worked through it. Another handy thing with being so patient is that Im happy to sit for as long as it takes to untangle wool, chains etc.

Will sit and knit this afternoon.

Have a good day

I hate it when that happens popeye, daughters offer us her cat she's very under feed and need lots of TLC so tony will be great for her and her for him

Popye I found this chart the best. Grew up with english terms but most of the patterns I like are american. The symbols are great because they show how many yarn overs there are.
