Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the
same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

The big banks have been given the nod to do a big take down from the Fed after reading your supporting comments lol. No sooner had you posted the downward spiral began.

Yes, I believe I have heard of people getting within 15%, knowing initially when that triggers that they should still be well away from the actual reserve. Then the seller edits the reserve to just a dollar above the current bid. Suddenly the next bidder, thinking they were still well away from the reserve, is on the hook.

Very true, and when the first bid trips the 15%, you just never know anyway!

I see what you mean!

By the by, just noticed this morning I had 2 $50 notes one from '99 and one from'12. Both notes came from a cash machine but the '12 note is about 1mm narrower and shorter than the '99 one. Is this intentional and is it meant to represent the shrinking buying power of the notes?

The shrinkage should be much greater if it were!

Newbie again.....I'm sure "incredibly thick layer of 24kt gold" and " 100 mills of pure gold"has been discussed on this site somewhere, could someone please give me an idea where...( page no?) I need amusement and (unlike Bunker) don't have 100kg of NZ Ag coins to sort through just now...
But, do I have a deal for you. See....

As far as I can tell 100 mills = 100 millionths of an inch, you'd need a good scientific scale to weigh this ultra thin layer of gold.

Not sure of exact weight, But I did the exercise on one of these rectangle 1 oz bars and disolved the gold in solution from the copper base, and then took the gold back out of that solution. It was not possible to weigh at under 1/1000gm so would have been less than $0.05c worth of actual gold.

"Investment bars", "works of art" .
Yeah Right, just a plated piece of copper

But, Bunker, it's got an "incredibly thick layer of gold" around it. I've often wondered whether the "incredibly thick" adjective relates to the goods or the purchaser.

That's correct.

I did the calculation one time using the dimensions given for the bar and came to about the same answer.

Last year some one put up a troy oz 'gold bar' for sale. They insisted it was pure gold. When they gave the dimensions of the bar it was over twice the size for a troy oz (i.e. base metal plated in gold). I told TM that the person was being fraudulent. They didn't listen. I warned a few people on their other listings who were very grateful for the warning. In the end with TM still not listening I started a thread. Lots of people found out then and started protesting. Just before the listing was due to close it was taken down. The thanks I got from TM was a warning. That along with me pointing out that a "respected" (LOL) trader was trying to sell a brass 1820s sovereign as genuine got me a month long ban from the boards. The rest is history.

That reminds me, did that trader ever come back with his brass sovereign graded by PCGS as he said he would. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.........

I just sorted some change to pay for a lot I won today and found these 2 coins.
The $1 coin has a dimple on the Queens cheek.
The $2 has 2 cuds on the wings, A large cud on the middle joint of the front wing and a small cud on the rear edge of the rear wing.
My Question is how common are these imperfections and are they worth keeping.
Thanks all.

Go Gold Go Silver Go the CARTEL.

Any ideas?

Google "Mansfeld-Schraplau"-
"Spruchtaler". Here's a similar example from 1595: http://www.mcsearch.info/record.html?id=353146

Heinrich II reigned till 1601 so it will still be the same chappie, even if there are minor variations in the wording on the coin.

There shouldn't be a dash between the quotes in the Google search above. I didn't type it that way but the TM system has inserted it for some reason. Delete it when searching or it will skew your results :-)
