This is the problem with signed covers. The Artists responsible for the Artwork have applied their signature in good faith of some recognition.

There is normally no official or authoritative indication that this is their genuine signature.

Compared to well known personalities like Sir Ed's signature (which can also be forged) some additional official rubber stamps should always acompany such signatures. Official Authoritative marks can be traced to their original producers and thus recorded.

Of Course anyone can say the cover was signed by whoever but only proof of that may enhance value as time goes on.
With no proof of the genuineness of the item ( and an insert does not hack it ) the doubt will overshadow any value and remain at the bottom rung.

If the Riverton cover is unblemished - Free from physical spots or stains it is collectable.

If however torn, creased, toned, discoloured or browned only the stamps may be good.

One or both Artist may become famous, then your cover would be looked at quite differently. A little effort in research could result in a better gain for you.
Were someone to pick out just an envelope addressed to Picasso value would be attached to it - just a thought !

What do others think about signed covers ?

Who likes to share his famous signed Cover collection ?

Why not Google for the Royal Philatelic Society NZ, contact the secretary. try Google with the Artists' names.

Sounds too much like hard work. well that's life !

The USA issued a set of 15 values @ 41c each mint never hinged, used 5c each.
With a very fine clear part round postmark you would be lucky to get 30c each.

I have a just got out an old album of stamps that I collected as a child around 50years ago and amongst them are some that I was given dating to the late 1800's. All the stamps are New Zealand and I haven't got a clue what's what.

Could someone inform me about an old stamp, with a reddish colour side profile of a Queen which has 6/- stamp duty on it and what looks like a hand written date 7/4/97. Is it a postage stamp? Pardon my ignorance.

Thanks to finding the 2010 catalogue I think it might be what is called a 6/- Postal Fiscal - Queen Victoria 1882. I forgot to mention that it has the words New Zealand Stamp Duty around the circle.

There were several Royal 100 publications, including a catalogue of exhibitors. Is that what you meant by attending? The RPSNZ Library holds them naturally.

Collected stamps many years ago and have quite a few, but probably not worth anything. Although I have one in my collection that I have often wondered about.NZ stamp from the 1970s a set of the old cars from the 13th vintage car rally. The 5c one is not completly printed on the LHS of the stamp as if the ink did not touch the paper. The blank section is approx 4- 6mm in width. Anyone seen this happen before?

I can vouch for Maurice Conly attending the Royal 100 Exhibition in Wellington as I was at the same banquet table seated beside him and his wife on the Saturday night.
Maurice signed many items and his signature is well known. Marcel Stanley also signed a lot of items for the 1988 Royal Exhibition as he was the Society's President. I don't think he was really the artist although he is often credited as such but i think he was more the designer than an artist.

Hi Steven,
That is wonderful news for the owner of the signed cover and may keep this Cover as a speciality in his collection.

At most some note may be made that 'kiwisteven' also attended and was witness to signing Covers.

There probably would be no proof appart from your word which I do not doubtis and even less in 50 years time.

What about if this Cover is sent to you for expertising. In other words you may be one that is best qualified to substantiate the legality of this signature with a certificate. Of course the original signee would also need to add his approval and sanction.

So all in all, the item would then be on philatelic record by the Federation.

You may not be an Expertizer but you need only to facilitate contacting the right person to provide such a certification.

Once all this labour is done, the cover with its certification must surely be worth more.

Personally far too many such signed covers float around none may be proven to obtain genuine signatures which is sadly lost with the sentiment it was originally created in the first place.

Both Marcel & Maurice signed many covers as fund-raisers for Royal 100. They were large covers bearing the $1 mini sheet. They exist with both their sigs, or just Maurice's. Allan Mitchell also signed many covers bearing the two 40c stamps issued at the same time. The RPSNZ sold the mini sheet covers at $5 each. They exist at NZ Post FDCs and as RPSNZ Centenary Day covers postmarked at the exhibition.

yeah, yeah,! I know, but TM could also then delete the above portion which means nothing now.

I vote for Donaldo to be the moderate of this thread.
I am sure he could make it more meaningful, cutting out all the deletions and Bull so others can actually learn from this thread.

here is a story. 31st Jan 1975, myself and the rest of the NZR track gang were working at Chatto Creek Station on the Central Otago Railway.
In the yard was a 6 x 4 shed, been there years and it was the Chatto Creek Post Office run since the begining by old Miss -------
Today it was to close, I quickly found an envelope put a 4c stamp on it and added "Last Day of opening Chatto Creek" and posted it to myself.

Next day they lifted the shed and took it away, I sifted under where it stood and found old silver coins from 1920 etc, an old vesta box etc.

Just found the envelope again... it must be unique, the only one in existance.

Whats it worth? 4c I suppose

Myself & my husband have just inherited 2 x carrier bags and 3 albums full of stamps from what looks like all over the world. I don't want to go through and list each and everyone of themas i don't have the time, but we could really use some money right now & want to sell them. Anyone with any ideas of reputable companies who will give us a honest price for them, or should i go through them

I think I remember handling other covers from the last day of Chatto Creek. Collectors when they heard about a Post office closing would send covers into the Post Office for post marking on the last day. In the last year i have done this twice myself. Never-the-less your last day cover would be worth at least $5 and if it was signed by the last postmaster/postmistress then about $10. Not bad for a 4 cent stamp on an envelope!

Google is your friend as is the yellow pages Dealers ,stamp/philatelic societies .
Always get two or more opinions/prices on your collections. As for going through them yourself get some advice as this may be your best bet for max dollar value but the dealer option is the quicker money.

Regards Paul.

Why not use a vuvuzela at the entrance to stamp shows, say every half hour.
Anthony Hopkins used one to gather his paratroopers in 'a Bridge too far'

Hi. This is my first foray into the Message Board area of TM. I am only posting here because I have a stamp collection from my Great Aunt (she was born around 1890) and I would like to know where I can get an honest appraisal of it. Any suggestions you have would be great.
Cheers

I send items to overseas collectors which may be of value by international registered mail.
As Courier post would be really pricey and normal mail too risky in the target Country what do others do ?

Surely there are some dealers here that tend to overseas orders.

There seems to be only one size (C5) available for Int. Registration yet for Courier there is a smaller size (240x130 mmsq.

This forces everyone to use the larger more expensive C5 plastic envelope which is not right.
