Don't know what's best for extra light. I have a flash already and use a flash cable and tripod to light through the fabric.

Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the
same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Interesting read on how Fiat dollars compared to both Gold and Silver have performed since year 2000. Can see NZ$ has held up to be one of the top performers against all other contenders.

Speaking of stomp marks on the face of the king, are there any collectors who'd be interested in valuing this hobo penny, or is this anathema to the hobby?

This is outside my personal ken. My strongest knowledge concerns US coins, so I'll offer my limited knowledge about hobo coins from there: They are varied and unusual, and there is a collectible market for them. The trick is finding the collectors on any given date or having them turn up by auction closing time.

Are you planning to sell? If so, just put it on with those good pix and set a reserve you're happy to accept.

Some of the folks here with more expertise in NZ coins may be able to offer more pointed insight. I think part of the problem with assigning a value comes from their inherently unique nature.

What he said :-) I'm not ignoring the question but simply don't know enough to add more. There are collectors who specialise in these, and the only way to find them is by listing them. Nice bit of artwork, btw.

Hi all. Does anyone use a usb digital microscope camera or similar, that is capable of viewing the whole side of a coin in real time, with the ability to take a photo if required? Have moved into a new house, ahhhh rural bliss, but last week the missus challenged me to a race down the driveway on the kids bmx's, anyway she used the brakes, and me being the crazy fearless male type didnt, and at about 50-60kmph it kicked me and i ate it big. My left calf and foot is still yellow and purple, and my left shoulder, tricep and ribs are still hurting bad, the ribs especially. Now since i'm not capable of doing any work on the block, i thought i'd make good use of this time to sort through some coins, but it turns out i cannot hold a coin in one hand and view it through my magnifier without my rib injury giving me grief. Need some technology to save me from this twisted reality.

I have one but find it's really only any good for close-up detail of minor features. For a whole coin shot a normal 8MB macro on a regular camera is perfectly fine.

Thanks for your reply Martin. I already have a closeup type, the sort you would use to look at mole or freckle size in detail, I also have a camera with an alright macro setting, and a scanner if required. What i want to be able to do is look at one side of a coin, flip it, look at the other side of the coin, all on the monitor, and be able to look at coins at the rate of about 100 an hour. Advantages: only need the use of one arm, will be able to see a good clear picture of the coin in any light conditions, wont have to be tilting the coin like you do in some lighting conditions, and not getting eye strain when doing it hours on end. I am thinking 10x or 20x magnification is probably ample enough as long as it can capture the whole coin. I have seen a couple in the listings that may suffice, just thought i'd ask if anyone here is using what i'm looking for.

What do folk think of Gold commemoratives? Obviously some NZ commems have done v well, like the Pukaki and NZ Scouting, while others, like the Hei Tiki, Heimatau and 2013 Maori Art have languished.
In particular, what about the 50th Anniv Commem of Dr Who, recently minted(250) by NZMint? I'd've thought this one might have a much larger possible market and could do well in after market, but it looks like they've not yet sold out..
Pity they didn't use the Tardis container they used for the silver commems...

To each his own, really. The market has been saturated with "coin-like objects", or "denomination-bearing medals" or "NCLT" or whatever you care to call them for 20-30 years now, and there probably aren't enough collectors or enthusiasts chasing them all to make them all appreciate equally. It also depends if your personal strategy is to invest or to collect - they are two different things, with different outcomes and different timeframes.

Go hard or go home, baby!! Oh, wait, you were home. And still are. Blame the wife. Works for me.

I'm quite happy with a camera that tops out at 10 megapixels and a tripod. Seems like if you got the tripod very stationary and had it zoomed in on a target spot, you could drop each coin in the designated spot, snap the shutter, flip it over and get the other side, then move on to the next. That's easily said. I know what it's like having limited mobility sometimes, including the odd pranged rib.

I'd set up to shoot all silver, then all copper, then all gold (if you are so endowed) because lighting requirements can be so different for each. While using digital macro has merits, I sometimes get better results zooming in on macro, but that means more space between the camera and subject, which may require more movement.

Best of luck with it and hope you make a speedy recovery. Feel free to share any interesting specimens. Specimens of coins, not from visits to the doctor.

Yes, I believe I have heard of people getting within 15%, knowing initially when that triggers that they should still be well away from the actual reserve. Then the seller edits the reserve to just a dollar above the current bid. Suddenly the next bidder, thinking they were still well away from the reserve, is on the hook.
