THE NEW COIN CLUB

Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the
same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

All good Dee, wow those scrap silver auctions today went really well, 40 to 50 times face value for scrap coinage was a great result.

I am wanting to find out about getting my mums coin collection appraised,(Hamilton) its not a large collection but it has some old coins. 1885 one penny, 3x 1969 james cook bi-centenary , hawkes bay and gisborne savings bank. I would like to find out more info on these coins. Any help would be appreciated.Thanks.

Hi nenes, posting some photos of the older ones on here would be a good start. If unsure how to do that, just ask. You can also search current and expired listings for some idea of what things really sell for. That actually begs the question: Do you want an appraisal for insurance reasons, or are you thinking of selling and want some idea of how much they are worth? Also, what country/countries are the coins from? Are they all British? If not, what other countries and what sort of date ranges?

$18 for "air transportation"?

Oh!

Sounds like they got a really cheap flight and will be delivering in person?

Think this is the same seller from last week who had a .999 x 1kg "Asian looking Gold Bar " for sale at $15000-00 over spot.No pickups, no safetrader and once funds were deposited ,seller was going to drop of to your bank lol.
The said bar in the persons hand in the pic looked straight out of the Shanghai Daily paper,

I am left wondering about a coin that says "genuine not gradable" on one side and MS69 on the other. Can anyone shed light or does it fall under my first law of numismatics - never buy a coin of a trader from China.

Can someone explain to me the sales prices of these Kennedy halves? I might just have to chuck a few up if they're going to sell so high above book/spot.

Yes hard to believe. I have 12 rolls of the 1964 still in the unc rolled paper, about to be dispatched to the melting pot.
Think a few well worn NZ 1/2 crowns may also reap similar rewards.See auction 642721414 and 642720970

I posted this for chefman in a new thread, but I have been informed he isn't around for a while.
What is the best way to send something like my half sovereign to a buyer ?Should it be registered post or is it OK to send signature required? Most of the sellers on here have sig required but I know some couriers are lazy and if it goes missing there is no comeback for something like that, is there?

Depends if you're posting domestically or internationally. With domestic post it's basically at your risk or as agreed with the buyer - there is no comeback for "valuables", even though that's what registered post and courier services were supposed to be for. Internationally, RNSNZ members can send coins with protection if they adhere to certain criteria as set out in the agreement with NZ Post.

Courier consignments are generally safe - I've only had three "issues" in many hundreds of consignments, one in which someone stole the entire courier van, and two in which - somehow - an unintended third party managed to sign for the parcels and all trace was lost. A courier firm is still trying to help track down one of the latter examples at the mo, but I'm holding out less hope with each day that passes.

Digressing here, sorry! Couriers would probably be the best way to go, but pack the coin well so it can't be felt through the bag and won't rattle. Some bubble wrap and firm cardboard are essential tools.

Thanks for the advice. I am not a collector or dealer, I just have this half sovereign that has been in the family for years (now mine). I need some money so it has to go. I just wasn't sure. it seems ridiculous that things are banned, when the only way anyone would know it was valuable, would be if you packed it in gladwrap.

To add just a bit to the good advice above: Please do NOT apply tape or other adhesives directly to coins. Fold them up in paper or plastic and apply tape to that.

Anyone know much about an 1893 South African threepence ? I have one but it isn't in great condition and has a small hole drilled through the top. I saw one on e bay that was worth quite a bit but i am guessing that mine will be worthless.

In fine condition (F) - i.e worn but words and details still visible - Catalogue Value (CV) is about US$3, in Uncirculated it is US$250. Those are quoted from the Standard Catalogue of World Coins 1801-1900 6th Ed.

Edit to add - With a hole drilled in it will probably be worth less than F condition - it has about NZ$1 worth of silver in it.
And also with eBay-
Was that a price that it was sold for or a price that someone was trying to sell for?

Good to see you too.

I just realised you had been gone a whole month, I don't pop in so much any more.

You got all your old posts put back in so I thought you must have had it reversed rather than serving out the whole month. My posts were never returned and of course the coin club......... :-(

I can't find it again. it was in the UK. It's just that I have come across a box of coins from all over the place. I don't know anything about them and I'd like to clear them out. I think I will just put them into groups of country of origin and denomination etc. There are a couple of unusual ones though like this South African 3p. It took me ages to figure out exactly what it was. Googling on dial up is a bitch.

Oh Oh, the gold sellers are back and have moved up from a 1kg to 20kg for a bargain price of start reserve $1,150,000-00. Now only $110,000-00 over what you can walk in off the street and purchase at my refinery.Would love to comment on their auction but have been blacklisted after their 1kg bar auction.

Free shipping? Hell, I'd expect them to throw in a week overseas as well if I'm throwing that kind of coin around. I guess the item pictured is not the actual item being sold, since they are only 1 KG bars in the image.

Possibly,as I had asked TM that they were confident that the seller had in their legal possession the over $1 million worth of product for sale.
