The irish...

http://freeirishgenebooks.blogspot.co.nz/

The availability of FREE eBooks and eJournals on the internet seems to be growing by the day. These pages list (with links to open the books) over 5,000 free Books and Journals on the topic of Irish, Irish-American, Irish-Australian and Irish-Canadian Genealogy which can all be read online - most of them can also be downloaded to a reading device such as Kindle, iPad, Tablet, etc. (check the host site for available formats). Many of these books are 'out of print', rare or otherwise unavailable in paper format. Some of the family histories were printed for 'Private Circulation' in fewer than 100 - 200 copies but are now available to anyone online. The illustrations are taken from the books listed supplemented with photographs by 'PJC'.

Big news in the Irish genealogy world. PRONI, the Northern Ireland Public Records Office has just finished copying and putting the Griffiths revaluation records from the 1860s to 1930.

There has always been a gap between the dates of the most common records being the Griffiths valuation records 1840s/60s and the 1901/1911 censuses. These revaluation books fill that gap.

http://applications.proni.gov.uk/dcal_proni_val12b/Search.as
px

All who have ever used the Griffith's Valuation to look for and maybe find
your ancestors may know that there are follow up books that track the
owners/leasers of the properties over the years.
PRONI has put the books online, in colour, for all to see for free.
However, they only cover Northern Ireland. Here is their blurb:

PRONI has put the Griffiths revaluation records from the 1860s to 1930
on-line on their site (free). For those unfamiliar with them, they are the
continuation records of the original Griffiths Valuation (1847 - 1864), and
use the same plot numbers and townlands. You can use these records to see when someone acquired or disposed of a property, when they died (eg the occupant will change to "reps of."), plus other changes such as purchase ("in fee"), Land Act Purchase "L.A.P" or demolition etc. The date of most changes are noted in the remarks column for each property. Different coloured inks were used for different years.
The PRONI records only cover the 6 counties of what is now Northern
Ireland. The equivalent records for the Republic remain in paper form and
can be accessed in the Valuation Office, Dublin.

This application provides a fully searchable placename index to the Valuation Revision Books (VAL/12/B) covering counties Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry and Tyrone between the years 1864 to 1933. In total, c.3,900 volumes were digitally captured, with over 440,000 images now available to view online.
The digital application is searchable by Placename (City, County, Parish,
Townland) or PRONI Reference. The cities of Londonderry and Belfast have been indexed to Street and Ward level. Streets can be found by using the free text search.
Of the c.3,900 original volumes, 44 have not yet been scanned. These
remaining volumes will be added to the database at a future date.

Manawatu Memory Online contains more than 4,500 digitized records from the Palmerston North City Library and the Ian Matheson City Archives collections. Over 2,000 records have no known copyright restrictions and are available for reuse. This collection is constantly growing as resources are digitized and made available online. Thanks to the hard work from the team behind the Manawatu Memory Online, there is a wide range of material for us to access, from historical photographs to maps, manuscripts and other documents.

Searching and discovering these amazing historical records reminds us of how important it is to ensure New Zealand memories can easily be found, shared and used by the world.

A great example is discovering the changes of the well loved and historical All Saints Church over the last 100 years or so.

Now this is a very neat website for finding out where a given surname could be found in the 1881 English census, especially if the surname you are researching is not too common.

This example is for the surname MERRIOTT:

If you are looking for dutch ancestors I highly recommend

https://www.wiewaswie.nl/

Last week my husband didn't know his grandparents names, from just finding out that I've now been able to go back 5 generations using this site! It is in dutch, and secure so you can't run a translator. You can copy paste over to google translate.
Some Basics
Huwelijk - Marriage , Overlijden - Death , Geboorte - Birth
Geboorteplaats - Place of birth , Geslacht - Gender , Leeftijd - age , Beroep - Occupation , Vader - Father , Moeder - Mother , Vrouw - Woman , Gebeurtenis - Event

Tried my Dennan name, site tells me there were none, when in fact there were :(

It just means that the data for that name hasn't been entered into the site. It doesn't cover every name on the census (at least not yet) - it doesn't have SCURR or STUMBLES which are two in my own tree.

Thank you to all the people that share so much information here. I've been on genealogy before to ask for historic info for my masters studies and the responses got me looking in all sorts of different places that I would have otherwise not have thought of. I got stuck again and found this list, its brilliant and I found what I needed to get back on track. Very generous thread, thanks.
