It is when they are used on international mail that the regulations apply and NZ Post are encouraging their use on international mail along with the Cals.

Yeah they did didn't they ... but they still say it is ok ... puzzles me!

Speaking to my boss who is an avid collector he didn't even know what the button was when I mentioned this to him. In discussing it he said the silver fern would be recognised by more but still not correct UPU wise.

Bonus of the new Job is that if he has it I get first dibs!!

Well has anyone been requested to pay 'postage due' on any such items. I would like to see such items.
Such an overseas item can be in demand for the modern postal history collector.

I successfully ruined several I never and still don't have over the weekend. One I will probably have to go buy as nothing I normally get requires a $1.50 stamp.

I didn't find warm water helped, however one I put in Sat night and forgot about till Sun morning was still attached although it did peel off nice and easy - still had the stretchy gum thing going on though.

interesting threads on nz post and their 'unauthorized' postage but why did they produce $1.50 and $2 values and if we didnt use them overseas??!!!

The larger envelopes A4 and the next one up are $1.50 & $2.00 to post I think.

A flamethrower for the easy ones and a small homemade thermonuclear device will do the job on the tough ones .

Hi all. newbie here on the stamp front. I have been in charge of Clearing an estate where there are loads of stamps. Most unused and dating back to dimes. and even earlier. If you could help giving tips and hints on where to sell them or what to do with them all help appreciated. Please come to an auction of mine and put your 2 cents in. Desperate for help.

Thanks

Kelley

Hi, I have found a grey 86 Police Centennary and was wondering if this was a common colour error. Thanks for any info

toenailpolish - 2010-04-15 20:53:00

The top halfs are sort of sepia and the bottom half should be in colour with a blue strip accross the middle. - Had a quick look in my bosses Campbell Pattersons and saw nothing in there.

bdreid10 - 2010-04-16 07:28:00

Everything is as per normal except the sepia top half is instead grey in colour. multicolour at bottom. from what i can tell the colour shouldnt have come out with soaking off paper surely... sorry, im a newbie and dont know all the correct terms yet :)

It is indeed encouraging to note that this thread does get read and some tips do rub off on fellow collectors.

i didnt realise it could be used in 'flame throwers' but it appears so with the name 'petroleum distillate' and certainly keep away from pregnant women and from it touching skin and eyes--mind you at the $11.50 i got charged i will make the bottle last a decade??!!

Up our way it is $13.90 ... so mine will last 2 decades!!

Hastings Philatelic Society,

As they are a club, the mailbox is their only contact. Why not drop them a note and ask them to ring you and invite you to the next meeting?

That fuelite video looks really great! Can't wait to try it.

In the film, he suggests use a steel ruler to remove the gum from the back. I'm a bit worried about maybe tearing the stamp that way. My preferred solution is to rub chalk dust or talcum powder over the back to stop the adhesive.

In the HUNDREDS I have done so far I have not ruined one :)

The NZ Mail stamps are particualrly resilient!

I know it looks brutal but it works a treat
Cheers

Any chalk dust or talcum powder may solve the problem in the short term.
The adhesive may ooze out more over time retaining the sticky problem.
The chalk or talcum powder over time attracts moisture and when air-trapped results in rust spots.

Hello again.

Im having no luck with finding someone to take my stamps to but have done a little reasurch on here and i have

32 First day covers, most of them have all the stamps and range from $2 - $15 on here

4 First day covers still unopened

Is it worth listing them and if so how much (please be honest)

No ripped stamps when I do it ... You can actually put a fair bit of pressure on whatever you use for scraping the gum off with.

Have a look at some of the expired auctions on here to give you an idea as to what various FDCs are selling for. If you have the time you would probably get more if you sell them individually. New Zealand ones will sell if they are not over priced. I don't know how well overseas ones are selling on here at the moment.

Hope this is of some help

Hi Roly.
I guess in Oz this is some sort of 'White spirit' What % hydrocarbon? Tony

warm3 - 2010-04-23 01:29:00

On the label after Fuelite in small writing it says Petroleum Distillate... and it even smell like white spirits.

And back to the little red "NZ Post Button" just realised it is also the CourierPost Logo ... so what implications does that have if any?

Tony
I started this venture by asking the guys at NZ Mail (I work almost next door to them) if thsy knew of a solvent for the adhesive on the backs of their stamps.
They in turn put me intouch with the suppliers of the base stock and it was from them that I was told that n-Hexane was the secret.
So... after searching all the Hardware stores I can across Fuelite which contains 196g/L of n-Hexane.
The rest is history. After I had experimented with the stuff for quite sometime I made the video one Sunday afternoon an now I am getting emails from all over the world asking what the local equivalent solutions are !!
Cheers
Roly

Thank you rolyrj. Excellent video!. Now I have the confidence to try this for myself. Thank you.

This could trigger off newspaper headlines as: "Philatelists questioned following mass purchases of inflammable substance."

Yeah ! Careful it may be banned under Alcohol and Tobacco bylaws or at least taxed and 'philatelist' may be targeted as possible terrorists making weapons of mass destruction.

Now others of disbelief at least can guess where the ash came from.

I better take a Boat to the next International. LOL

Maybe we could start some secret society like "The Order of the Stamp" and have Grand Masters etc
