Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the
same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

What downgrades a coins grading. I would have thought a coin with two large scratches couldn't be classified as EF. Appreciate your opinion on 623105947

Are we talking in terms of assessing value or in terms of strict grading? I'm just making the differentiation that in terms of wear on the design, the scratches don't technically affect that. On the other hand, they do take away from the coin aesthetically, and therefore in terms of book value. But maybe that's really just an elaboration of what Martin alluded to with respect to a US POV.

$5 Notes appear to have a centre fold in them? (1989 to 1991 ) aprox $10 to $15 each
Will have a look at the others shortly for you

$2 Notes, same centre fold would have a value in the range of $4 to $8 each

These are similar in value to the other $2 Notes (1985 to 1989 )
Book value is a little higher but sales at those figures are common.

Hi - I'd really appreciate some help, as I keep procrastinating about listing this collection of NZ coins I inherited. Here's some photo's for an idea:
http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/full/279499852.jpg
http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/full/279500939.jpg
http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/full/279501682.jpg
http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/full/279501841.jpg

It's mainly pre-decimal, but you can see there are some decimal coins there too. Also a few 'tokens' thrown in as well.

I have no inclination to list anything separately as I'm quite keen to get rid of some of this 'inherited clutter'. I am really unsure of a good reserve price for the collection as pictured. I'm only looking for a fair price, that's all - subjective I know, but any suggestions would be hopefully get me started.

Thanks!

If nothing really high grade in the 1/2 crowns ,would expect to attract bids between $165 and $220, plus whatever maybe in the album, top box of coins (pennies?) plastic bag of coins?and the two paper bagged packets inside the clear plastic bag.

Identify the unknown items or at least some good clear pics of those, then best of the 1933 to 1946 1/2 crowns and set a modest reserve to interest all the collectors out there. They will value your collection with actual money on the table in their bids. All the best,Alan

Plenty of the handmade sovereigns still in the jeweler s and pawn shops.
Hope to get a visit to the new gold mine while here as well.
Go the All Blacks, go Team NZ in the sailing. Will be watching in anticipation again in the morning.Bula, Alan

Yes, there's a Cazador piece that closed Sunday which has me wondering the same thing. But neither is an area of special focus for me, so maybe I am just missing something.

I have a 1991 NZ$1 that is ever so slightly thinner than a 2002. I have not yet put them on a scale, but I will try to do so soon. This seems like more than just wear and tear.

I feel like I recall reading that the change of the effigy on the NZ$1 to the more.... mature image of the queen also accompanied a slight change in thickness of the coin.

Thoughts?

echoriath - 2013-08-20 22:57:00
2326

The IRB effigy is a bulkier one than earlier versions, and draws up more metal as a consequence, but I haven't heard anything about a change in thickness. Time to get the callipers out!

A George III half-guinea weight (2 pennyweight 16 grains, or 4.147g, is within a fraction of the official weight of a half-guinea) - you'd put this on one side of the balance and your half-guinea on the other side to see if it was of good weight.

Bound to be worth something, just a question of what :-) Best to do some Googling and see if you can find comparable examples. Bear in mind that there are many different versions of these issued over a long period, and they'll have different values to those in the know. I'm tickled by that reversed "2", though, as the die-cutter must have been having a bad day.

Cheers thanks for that. Yeah I just tried to do some googling and couldnt find anything like it...

Try a more generic search for "coin weights" and "George III". Here is a listing of quite a few, though I don't see one matching yours: http://www.abccoinsandtokens.com/Coin%20Weights.html
You'd really need to get a copy of Paul Withers' catalogue - I don't have it myself so can't look it up for you.

A couple of handy image programs useful for TM:
Greasemonkey, shows all the thumbnails of items with pictures (only the main pic though) so you don't have to click thru.
SAGE THUMBS: blows up the thumbnails from about 150 to any percent...also works on the right click for saving, filing pics, very useful. Google for download sites. Once you have greasemonkey installed search for TM scripts to install and help your TM browsing. Cheers

I have been offered 20 Pound for my half guinea weight. But dont know whether to list it here or sell to the gentleman who I emailed about it...

cashintheattic - 2013-08-24 09:11:00

You could try it here with a low start and a high reserve and see how the bidding goes. If there isn't much local interest, take the British offer :-) The market could be stronger there in any case.

I see you have them finishing During the day Unfortunately that will rule out a lot bidders that bid at the end, But that is your call I guess.

As much as I dislike using the auto-bid function, it is an option if you know you can't be there at closing.
No complaints from me though if you prefer not to bid.

I would appreciate some help. I have some NZ One Dollar coins 1973-1982. These coins are each presented in a case as per pic. The front row of coins are each housed in a round, sealed, hard plastic case & I suspect these are all proof silver coins? The only coin that has any written description is the NZ 1982 Proof Silver Dollar Coin. In the back row of coins, two of the coins are in little snaplock plastic bags & the other three are in sealed plastic. I don't know if these are proof or uncirculated or what?
Please could someone help classify these coins for me & give me an idea of their value? Thanks.

The small collection I bid on tonight is my point entirely When I sit in front of the computer at home with no work , I always bid more than I would ever do on Auto bid.

Yes, all good as I was really only bidding to try and win one of the auctions from this seller as paid for a proof set about 3 months ago with a pickup arranged and somehow lost the address and with the listing over the 35 days , the contact email address.
Was still a good little lot to own. All the best.
