Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the
same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

I think they were all hand-signed and numbered by the author. They can fetch good prices, but like anything, at the end of the day it depends what potential buyers are prepared to pay.
Assume that should be 1941/42 rather than 1946.

No, but my wife will be in the Philippines in 8 days time and could possibly get the local prices on any particular item you need info on.

When I reached the point that my catalogue ran out, I was able to find details of more recent signatories and the associated catalogue numbers on-line. Try a few Google searches and see how you get on. This one might help for starters: http://pinoynotes.hostoi.com/

Save up your NZ proof silver $1 coins and get them up to Europe pronto. Price tags of 70 euro each in the few coin shops I discovered along the way was the norm. No plush case or COA just loose coins to boot.

Thanks Martin. Another unusual place to find a coin and note dealer was right in the Saint Mark's Square, or Piazza San Marco, Venice.Would have to have one of the best pedestrian counts in the world walking past your front door. Shop is only aprox 3mt x 3mt in size but guess keeps the rental costs down.

Yeah, best to have some idea what you're looking at. I saw a lot of really poor forgeries in the jade markets in Hong Kong. I took one glance and that was enough to put me off. Same with most of the "jade", though I found some nice lapis. Wish I'd bought more of that, actually.

hi there , I have a coin ( Shilling ? ) in silver of Queen Anne dating from 1708 in what looks like good condition to me , but I know grading is very complicated and has a real bearing on value. Who and or where in NZ or CHCH can grade this coin and if so what do they charge and is grading recognised internationally

Hi, tomytidlemouse, any chance of posting a pic in here?

Grading by the larger services is internationally recognised, e.g., by PCGS. I had heard talk of them opening a branch in NZ, but I do not know if they have or where. Google is probably as much help as anything. The last time I checked, submissions had to be made by mail to the US.

Whether or not the coin is worth grading depends in part on authenticity, condition, rarity and a general notion of value derived from those. So a coin with an approximate book value of, say, NZ$20 is probably not worth having graded. On the other hand, it may be worth considerably more, and perhaps you want it graded regardless of value.

If you post a picture here, someone might be able to offer some guidance on condition and potential value.

I am not sure where to start ?? As I would like to have them valued with a view to selling.
Some of these coins date back to 1912.
Any help would be appredciated
Thanks

What countries have you got besides NZ/English? What are the date ranges by country? If you post some photos of some of the earlier dates in here, I am sure some folks could help you out.

As for selling them on here, the best bet is to group them by country in quantities of five to ten. Take very good pix. Do you have a camera, and are you decent at taking photos? The easy way with a good camera is to put it on Auto. If you are more motivated and know how to use the camera, you probably already know where to find a flower icon that is a setting called Macro and that this is specifically for the purpose of taking close-up photos. This process is easier with a tripod, though you can stabilise the camera yourself by holding the camera with both hands and placing your elbows on a flat surface above the coins.

It's also better to turn off the flash and shoot with natural sunlight. Cameras that cost more than $100 or so (and maybe some that are less) have a remarkable number of options for taking good pix, but the main point is that good pix of both sides of your coins generally = better returns. Good pix reveal the quality of coins, whether that quality be good or bad.

Does anyone know of this coin collection. Bronze, Led, Zinc, Copper, Nickel coins. In a red card cover. 34 coins in total.
14 Vietnam from 1885 to 1947.
8 coins from emperor Gia Long 1802 to Emperor Tu Duc 1883.
8 coins from South Vietnam North Vietnam from 1953 to 1976.
4 Coins Socialist republic Vietnam.
Do you have any idea of worth of these.
Thanks for your help.

A lot will depend on the condition of the coins. Any chance of posting pix of them here? There are tips above on how to take good photos of small items like coins.

First coin (bottom right in photo) looks like a silver piastre, which makes me a little sceptical about authenticity straight away. They're not all that rare from memory but it just seems unusual for one to appear in a pack such as this. I could be wrong, but clearer, closer pictures would help with more detail, as would a weight of that one coin, if it can be removed from the packaging without difficulty or damage.

Yes, they really need to be spelt out - "two scratches, otherwise EF" or some such. It doesn't really take it down a grade, though you could "net grade" it the way the Americans do - EF with scratches, net gVF, perhaps.

I once tried my luck asking the guys in the markets in Suva if they had any old coins or notes. Not a lot of joy - the usual response was along the lines of "how much would you pay for a penny?"

In the mid-1990s, the Reserve Bank of Fiji still had uncut sheets of 1942 1/- and 2/- notes for sale. They were a bit dear at the time and I let them go. Didn't ask last time I was there a few years ago, but you never know.

Still plenty of holed sovereigns used as pendants but only good for scrap value. Also quite a few fake Sovereigns but quite good in appearance and have had them tested here using the spectrometer and they are actually made of the correct fineness of gold at .9167 (22ct) and are also the correct weight.Hope to be taking a look at their big new gold mining operation .
