Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the
same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Still trying to find a coin dealer lol. May try to find the pawnbroker instead. The local jeweler didn"t know what a sovereign coin was so not holding out for great buying opportunities.

A sovereign is about $400. Found one years ago, but decided to keep it.

From memory these have slightly less gold than a half-sovereign, roughly 1/10 of an ounce - that would give you a starting point, anyway.

Good spotting - looks like the start of a broken back at least - the RH side of the back is narrowing to a V at the base but hasn't quite broken completely free of the waistband. I haven't seen it on any but 1942 and 58 so far.

Depends what years

1910 - 1945 are .3363 oz ASW ( Actual Silver Weight )
1946 - 1963 are .1818 oz ASW

I hope that helps you decide

Not totally accurate - for instance the years of silver NZ half crowns, but useful nonetheless - http://www.silverrecyclers.com/Calculators/ster_calculator.a
spx

It has the silver contents, an up to date spot price and allows working with multiple currencies.

Can anyone tell me how I can put pictures on this forum to get some advise as to likely value of specific coins before I list. I have a large collection of coins but would not have a clue as to what to ask for them. If I can post a picture here before I list the coin, I can maybe get an idea of their worth. Thanks

As chefman mentioned , a price guide could be a good investment , though they are typically indicative of retail prices. If you get half that on here, you've done well. I've seen things sell for more than half, and sometimes for MORE than retail.

As for posting pix, go to My TradeMe and look for My Photos. Go in there and Upload Photo. Once uploaded, get the full-sized image on the screen by clicking on it. Hold down Alt and tap the letter "D". Hold down the Ctrl button and tap the letter "C". Come in here to post a message. Hold down the Ctrl button and tap the letter "V". Now post the message.

It would have been faster to say "cut and paste the url of the image", but I have learned to be cautious in making assumptions about peoples' knowledge of technology.

Are you an Aussie Peter?!! What I meant was that the Aussie sovereigns are a direct copy of the mother country's sovereigns apart from a small mint mark (in some cases).

Even though I sometimes enjoy taking the opposite side just for the fun of it, in this case you could argue that in the days of Empire the Australian mints were "just" branches of the Royal Mint that were tasked to produce sovs and half-sovs on behalf of the parent company. They're usually listed in UK coin catalogues accordingly.

I'm not sure what the answer is, beerlady, but I am curious, because I believe I have one of those as well. You can always search expired auctions to see if any have sold recently and for how much. Or if they did not sell, how much is too much for the market.

As chefman said, you already found the place to sell them. Now you just need to maximise the money by taking the best pix you can. Depending on what camera you have and what coins you have, it could be worth buying or borrowing a good camera to ensure it has the "Macro" setting. If you leave a camera on "Auto" newer ones will select macro as they are getting so smart that the operator is becoming obsolete.

There seemed to be fewer 1973s than pretty much any other date when I was sorting coins out prior to the changeover in 2006. It's the lowest mintage of all the theoretically circulating dates other than 2004, but 4 million is still a lot. Wonder if something similar happened back then - enough earlier years still in circulation and not all 4 million issued in the first place (and the balance melted without ever making it to circulation)? Pure guesswork on my part, and I doubt if any records were kept by the year. There may be something in the official files about numbers of coins withdrawn/consigned for melting at the time, though, which may offer some clues at least.

This is listed in the MacMaster catalogue of NZ commemorative medals; the companion price guide suggests $5 for the standard cupro-nickel version, though I've seen them sell on TradeMe for less, sadly!

Postage and coins - as money is considered a prohibited postage item, when a parcel goes missing, say $10 sale price of collectors coins, plus postage. Do NZPost process these claims for lost mail, or say 'tough luck you were told coins were prohibited'? I see so many auctions for coins with 'buyers own risk' attached. Or is money no longer in circulation not considered 'money', but more a collectors item? Thanks chefman.

tofuqueen - 2013-07-25 16:52:00

i would say that would be standard post = [buyers risk] but yes nzpost will not paid out for any prohibited items = money, valuables, dangerous goods so your answer is 'tough luck' if it goes missing, but they will help you to try and fine your parcel.
