Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

KM #6, 120,000 struck, in average condition it's worth about $1 in BU it's worth US$7.50 according to the Krause and Mishler catalogue. There were a few of the smaller countries of the old Empire that had coins struck for his brief 'reign'.

You're welcome. I think there are copies on google books for online reading, you might even be able to save the PDF file to your PC.

I wouldn't have anything to add to the answers you already had in the other thread. Bear in mind if you want a formal valuation by a dealer they may well charge for it. But if you want to sell directly to a dealer, it's probably best to get a few offers.

How old is your oldest coin btw?

What is the ideal size of photograph (pixels etc) to get the biggest pic for a good viewable detail coin photo on TM? I have a program that will reduce the pic from approx 10MB to about 500kb so it uploads a bit quicker, but I would like to know the optimum pixels width x height to adjust it to before uploading. It seems TM adjusts the pic during upload as well...cheers

I've experimented using photos from 1-3MB and TM always seems to compress to about the 50-60KB range. It's hard to get a coin to fix perfectly into the aspect of the photo box that TM uses and the best size is achieved using 1:1 aspect so using one photo for each face of the coin as opposed to my cheapskate approach of using 2:1 aspect and having one photo showing both sides of the coin.

Thanks for those ideas, I will experiment with the 640 x 480 size, still want to see if I can get both sides of the coin in one pic yet still be big enough to view detail...cheers

you're essentially hampered by the aspect ratio with coins. As they are circular you can't get better than 1:1 or 480 by 480 or whatever resolution without distorting or 2:1 if you do a combined image. Bruce's photo is very clear but still has a lot of background to it. What it shows best is the importance of even lighting - no shadows and being close enough to capture the detail.

My sister dropped off some of my late dad's things including an old box full of coins and odd bits. We saw some nz coins and compared them to the once we use now. One coin looked a bit odd. I will try and put a pic up if I remember how to do it.

Hi verebi, that looks like a clipped planchet. If so, this would be a manufacturing error which theoretically boosts the value beyond its normal book value. By how much? Best way to find out is to list it with clear pix (no flash taken in indirect sunlight), a good description and a sensible reserve that would make you happy.

Not quite the whole story, I'm afraid. There were copyright issues with some of the material used in the book, and the author wasn't prepared to supply electronic copy. I was going to stay out of this particular thread but it appears the RNSNZ is copping some unjustified blame when it initially expressed interest and offered additional research materials from its Journals, which were rejected. The author has self-published in the meantime so the book is "out there" for anyone who wants it.

I'm happy to save 10c a time - it all mounts up! I use Photoscape, which is free to download and very quick once you get used to it.

Hi echoriath! Thank you so much for the response. Both of us are not coin collectors and have no idea. Will try and take some pics as suggested and see what my sister wants to do, since they are now hers. Would you know the book value roughly just to get an idea? Would it be between $1.00-$10.00? There's a whole bunch of other coins too my late dad has in the box. But wouldn't know if any are rare or of value. Thanks echoriath! : )

Agreed, espcially if it doesn't sell on first listing...... Though for my excuse, I have Scottish blood, what's yours?

I don't know whether you are being complimentary or not! :-). The photo was meant as an example of clarity, not as a be all and end all of photography. I'l love to be able to take some of the photos that you see around. However for my purposes if I can get the quality of that halfcrown in daylight inside without a tripod I'm happy.

I was being complimentary! It's an excellent photo of a coin showing the detail. All I was saying though is that once you move past a 1:1 aspect ratio all you're getting is background, nothing wrong with background but it won't add any extra detail to the coin. Still, a better representation you could not want than your photo!

Yeah, we took our little girl down there last year for a trip. She was only about 18 months at the time. She was very quiet coming into Rotorua and then we hit a pocket of egginess and she piped up 'Eggs, eggs, pew, yuck'. Given that she never said much at the time it was quite funny for her. I'll be down there this week.

It's a brilliant idea - the Royal has been pushing the idea of circulating commemoratives for quite a while now but it kind of falls between the cracks - the RBNZ does circulating coinage, NZ Post does commemoratives, so part of the problem lies in defining our terms :-) The subject isn't being allowed to get cold, though. And the more people that express an interest, I the more likely the authorities are to take notice.

Thanks for mentioning that book Merchants Making Money, Donaldo. Went and got me a copy from the author, what a great book...lots of interesting information on the actual companies that issued the tokens. I always wondered about the backstory on some of those traders.Would recommend it to anyone interested in NZ traders tokens..cheers!

A related title is "They Made Their Own Money", published by the Canterbury Branch RNSNZ in 1950. Probably quite hard to find now but the theme is similar, with a focus on the Canterbury token issuers. Not sure how many overlaps there will be.
