Thanks people for the suggestions.Expert opinion has it that i should not relist it as ''looks postally used'', and that i should start a ''too hard pile'' with it, which is exactly what i have done. cheers

It looks to me as if there is a typical red-violet oval fiscal firm's cancel crossing the "FOU" of FOUR then heading down the right side and coming back in under the 2nd "D" of the lower DUNEDIN cancel. There also appear to be faint other letters inside the oval on the RHS - like a "W" after the last "N" of the top DUNEDIN.

I think it's most likely a poorly washed fiscally-used item with a dodgy postmark, or less likely, someone trying to re-use a fiscally used stamp back in the 1880s to save 4d postage, once they became valid in 1882.

Just my 2c worth
Adam.

Any architectural thematic collectors on here that would be interested in a vertical pair of the P & T Training School - Swaziland E2.40, SG Cat no 699, 125th anniversary of the postal union issue?

what is the cv of this rarity???!!!--if you listed it you would find out if there was any interest

About $5.00 for a single, have no idea if it would be less for a pair.
Will be listing it when I have time too!!

Question. How do you mount Minature Sheet FDC, FDC and mint blocks for competitions? I don't want to use hinges on the actual covers/blocks. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have several stamps which have come through the post which the franking machine has missed so they still look 'mint'. What category do they come under? A letter arrived today and the postmark was on the back of the envelope. Now I have 5 'new' stamps and at first thought it had been personally delivered.

I would say they were orphans and should be 'accidently reused'. It would be unkind not to so do.

warm3 - 2010-01-30 12:12:00

Collectors call them 'mint no gum' but they usually only collect mint stamps with the gum still intact unless they are rare. You can't remove a stamp from paper without removing most or all of the gum so if they are NZ stamps it is best to reuse them as long as there is no part of the postmark on the stamps.

I have a joind pair of '54 QE II Officials with no apparent watermark but both stamps look like they have a red offset on the back ... would it be worth getting them checked by someone?

Also (to save another post) with the older pre decimal stamps is there any value in those that are offset to the perfortations?

bdreid10 - 2010-01-31 13:45:00

Can you upload a photo of the '54 QE II Officials so we can see what the offset looks like?

By "offset to the perforations" do you mean the design of the stamp is off-centre? This generally makes a stamp less appealing to collectors.

front and back of stamp, sorry they are not too clear, the franking has gone through to the back as well, but you can see the red clearly just looking at the stamp. The photo doesn't really do justice to the stamp. Might see if I can get the scanner going.

I feel like i need to apologise for asking all these questions because here is another ...

I have these two stamps (year 2000 issue) listed in the SG cat:

1996 900r. Glehn du Busquet steam loco. , 1891 £0.65 £0.20
1997 1000r. Le Grand Chocolats steam loco. £0.85 £0.20

however on the actual stamps these are the other way round and I am thinking this is a mistake on the SG website. Can anyone confirm this or should I send off an email?

The watermark looks very clear ... I can't see any offset (which as donaldo has said, is the erroneous printing of the stamp's design - in reverse image - on the back of the stamp, due to the printer running without a sheet of paper in it, and the ink being transferred onto the roller behind).

There are a couple dealers in the Wellington region. Which is a start, however we have a couple of philatelic societys who can assist with your requests. Pop into the yellow pages and you will find them there. At the end of the day it depends if you are in a rush to sell or not. In a rush - probably not going to get the true value. No rush- you may do alright

Are you sure it is not King george VI ... a photo would be of great help. 1953 is when QEII was coronated and there is no stamp that I know of with King Edward VIII on it, except the minature sheet in 1990, although the stanley gibbons catalogue lists the coronation stamps if you search "Edward" as the key word

hi, this has more than likely been asked heaps of times but. We are about to start our daughting journy through thousands of stamps from an estate. I have been pricing up album and such and have worked out it is going to be rather costly (mildly put) what with the amount I will have to buy. A very tiny part of this collection had been sorted and displayed on grid like paper with what type of stamp, or errors etc hand written under it. They were stuck on with those little sticky square things. would I get away with doing this now days????? Thanks, p.s. I'm not cheap, just sticking to a budget.

I have 2 albums full of miscellaneous stamps, this is half of what I collected as a child. Most are about 45 years old, some much older. Mainly from Germany, but from all over the world really. How could I find out whether there is anything of value in there? Thanks
