I made this just before Christmas for a Pot Luck family lunch... everybody raved about it and nobody had heard of it before.

Oakhill Potatoes
5 x med potatoes,cooked and diced.
1/2 tsp salt
3 x TBS butter
2 x TBS flour
2 x c milk

Make a white sauce, cooking the flour well.

Combine the cold potatoes,2 x hard boiled eggs,a small finely chopped onion, 2 x rashers of cooked bacon and salt and pepper.Add white sauce and mix to combine, and turn into a greased oven dish.

Melt 1 x TBS butter and combine with 1/2 c breadcrumbs and sprinkle over the potatoes.

Bake at 180C for about 30mins.

I did it slightly differently in that I cooked the onion and bacon in the butter.... then added the flour and went on to make the white sauce... delicious.

hello everyone, was missing in action up north at the kai iwi lakes - boys were in a tent but we were in a lodge (not silly!!) lots of slips and fields that looked like lakes when we drove home last night!! that potatoe recipe sounds very yummy and agree that cooking the onion in butter would probably give it a bit more of a creamy taste. the hospitals/doctors are very good at not quite giving you enough antiboiotics to last through and I think is quite a common thing to get a bug on top of a bug, once when I had one lot after the other I went back to the docs and he basically told me the antiboiotics strip all the flora and fauna out of your body so they strip the good bugs away so leave you with no fighting buddies!! - makes sense if you think about it, and being knocked out I do think takes 3 months to get your system back and not out of wack!! and has manchester street got red lights??? (not living there not sure - if that was your reference winnie?) lol

Experience is a great teacher Ali so perhaps you would find the answer to your question by checking out Manchester Street after dark!

Oakhill potatoes! My mother used to make them and I had forgotten all about them - they were delicious and I must make some soon. Have made four types of jam, spicy apricot sauce and beetroot relish this weekend so feeling very domestic goddessy except that it probably wasn't the smartest with a bad back so now I'm creeping around bent at the waist. Not a very goddess-like pose really. Hope the bugs are beaten into submission this week or the title of this thread might have to change to "circle of crocks". And Cooks ChCh has some lovely blokes although you might not find them on Manchester Street at night. I can remember driving down there one Christmas Eve after Carols by Candlelight when the kids were small and fielding some really tricky questions!

lol greerg - I can imagine the questions!!! I drive the length of Peterborough St on my way home from the casino which means a series of stop signs for me (but still the fastest way home at 4am!) & there's always some interesting girls on the Manchester St corner. All jokes aside - it makes me feel quite sad & I wonder at their individual stories.

On a brighter note - Oakhill Potatoes was something I grew up with too & haven't eaten in years. I think I'll go start a new thread for them so folks can share their families versions ...

Good Morning fellow early risers ... mine is thanks to a nasty bout of pain, which will hopefully subside soon. I had a laugh about the suggestion of 'circle of crocks' ... too true. cooks, I once stopped to render aid at a nasty motorcycle accident. The cyclist's leg was broken and sticking out at an alarming angle ... when the ambulance got there, he cried more about his leather suit having to be cut off his leg than he did with the pain ! Poor fellow. :-)

Goodmorning all,
it's back to work for me tonight ... hope I can last the distance! Tonsils are much better ... it's just the rest of me that's still dragging a bit lol!
Good for you Pam - I had a huge clean out before moving to Chch and now I'm sitting in bed listening to Mum going through the "I can't take that & that won't fit & you kids need to come collect ..." She has just sold her house & has bought a new 2 bdrm townhouse which is ALOT smaller than here!
Have a good day all & hope all the crocks keep on improving!

I now take time out for me to stop and smell the roses.
I have been planing my garden, not able to work in it yet,but soon will be.
I really like roses, have 2 in a garden here,so going to make that my rose garden, going to but 2 a fortnight.

Assessors came to look at the second chimney today. Lovely woman who said I should have 1 claim not 2 - which is what I've been saying all along. It's gone 2,1,2,1,2 so far which is a pain for a claim that is barely $10,000 (so today's assessor says). I was also a bit worried that I might be accused of claiming twice for the same thing - but that's sorted.

I just want to run away and hide - I know I'm lucky the damage was so little, but I am so fed up. This is one time when living by myself sucks.

cyber hug, its not easy when you are dealing with everything yourself, so be kind to your self, and there will be some pro "how to deal with assesors"in the earthquake thread. I could have sworn I did a post earlier today saying how terrible it is some of these accidents on our open roads, dont know where that one went to I am sure I hit post message. saw kings speech today just a lovely lovely movie and the acting was just fab. kids all home safe from travels again, youngest came from far north today so all good with everyone safe.

The logic of EQC has completely defeated me. We had heard nothing since the original acceptance of our claim but weren't worried as we have had the cylinder fixed and nothing else is at all urgent - especially compared with other people's problems. However, a very pleasant young man rang on Saturday, got my husband to describe the damage, estimated that it would be worth $6,000 (much more than we thought). A cheque will be here within three weeks. I'm very grateful but how can that happen when so many people are being driven to the brink of despair - there seems to be some sort of cosmic roulette wheel in operation.

Morning lovely ladies...& gentlemen....

I had a friend who had 3 girls and she once said to me I owe it to my girls (2) to be a role model that a women is not just a wife, mother, chief cook & bottle washer.... she is also her own person... that way they can grow up to have rich full lives themselves. I do try... but its easy to get into that rut of putting everyone else first.

Hope everyone is healing well... I am on my way but no way near fighting fit, which is irritating me as I have an awful lot on with family over this next week. Brother coming home from Oz tonight for a holiday, Mum & Dad both have Birthdays, Brothers early birthday and farewell dinner and a hospital stay for my Dad... all this in the next 2 weeks. Glad this week is a short week, and I am looking after myself and taking everything else easy. Think I have had a cold can feel it in the back of my throat and nose.... if not a cold then a bug from the hospital.... but managed a full day yesterday and cleared a huge back log.... but in a laid back non stressed way.... I am so glad I can do that... one of the girls I work with is so busy having a meltdown... that she doesn't have enough time to do the actual work lol.

Freezer is looking sadly empty at the moment so have to follow the specials and stock up a bit over the next week... Anytips greatfully accepted, luckily I have all the major supermakets and the mad butcher on the way to and from work. Think Sirloin is $16.99 at Mad Butcher... which is an easy BBQ dinner... but hasn't meat gone up lately... I used to buy meat for the 4 of us for about $6 on special... now its $7 or $8 minimum.

Well thats me for now... off to do jobs...

Take Care
JB

Almost makes me feel grateful we just had an earthquake. Imagine having the incredible noise. etc. going on all night without a break and not knowing what you are going to see when the sun comes up. Terrifying.
How lovely that you have all these positive life changes happening as you recover from your surgery Earthangel - the doctors couldn't have prescribed anything more therapeutic. But do keep going slowly - it would be easy to have an attack of the Toadfishes and overdo things with a whole new garden waiting for you - I know I probably would and then regret it and have everyone mad with me for being silly.
I've been laid waste with my back for a while now but hope to be able to sit in one position long enough to see the King's speech in the weekend. The only negative thing I've heard about it was from 22 year old dragged there by girlfriend and his opinion doesn't count since he only likes action and sci-fi movies. Everyone else has shared Auckland_ali's views
