Did you use both baking soda and powder? It sounds like you didn't get the raising agents right. Should not be water clogged at all (once cooked!)

I cheated and used SR flour!!

OK. A good reason why it turned out differently to how it does normally.

This has recently been the cake (double mix) for the 50th birthday celebration of my work and my twin sons' birthday cake. I'm told it's specially good for breakfast but I'll give that a miss. Thank you Hooksie.

Hey guys, I'm looking for a cake recipe for this weekend. I've got 4 0 tins for a 40th birthday cake. Would this recipe be appropriate? And could I add cherry to it? Anyone done that? Thanks.

Yes I am going to ice it with a normal kind of icing and put a little fondant topper on one of the numerals. Do you think it would not be suitable?

Have you tried this cake? Do you know if it's a good firm cake? And also if it could be cut in half to put something in the middle? Sorry for all the questions...just wanna make sure it's the right cake before I make it tonight. I will also check that other thread you mentioned.

Did anyone have to cook this for much more than an hour? It's almost an hour now and still runny in middle.

I split it in half and sandwiched it with 1 tin condensed milk in a pot 1beaten egg conbined and bought to the boil, taken of the heat and then add fine coconut mixing all the time until it is a thick spreadable mixture. Sanwich it betwee the 2 layers. It looks great and is very decadent.

I made this exactly as you did OP and oh my goodness. I took it to a sports prizegiving and it was so so yum. Thank you :-)

For all the questions above - I made it exactly as OP described it - the water does make it runny as a batter but that is the recipe and there is a reason for it - you pour it into a lined roasting dish and baking it for approximately one hour - until the knife or skewer comes out clean is how long you bake a cake - might be a little over or under depending on your oven. As with all baking I set my timer a little earlier than 1 hour and then keep an eye on it - may take more or less time depending on the size of your tin or your oven.

You could cut the cake in half if required once baked if you wish to add a filling - but it is a very moist cake so I would wait until well cooled to do so.

Just lovely, the sugar, the water, all the ingredients are a perfect match for each other to make this cake something special.

I've made a lot of different chocolate cakes... This one is the best. A big plus that it is better the next day! So many go hard and dense or dry quick. I halved the recipe and used my bundt tin... My roasting dishes are huge, so I didn't think it would get the height in it.

Flourless Chocolate Cake
250g best quality dark chocolate, chopped
2 tbsp brandy
2 tbsp black coffee
200g butter chopped
1 cup castor sugar
1tsp vanilla extract
1 3/4 cups ground almonds
6 eggs separated
Preheat oven to 170. LIne the base and sides of 23cm diameter springform cake tin with baking paper.

Combine choclate brandy and coffee in a large bowl over a pot of boiling water, stirring as the chocolate melts. Add butter, sugar and vanilla and stir until the butter has melted. Remove from heat and stir in ground almonds. Lightly beat egg yolks and stir into the chocolate mixture.

Place egg whites in a large, clean bowl and beat to firm peaks. Stir in a spoonful of beaten egg white into the chocolate mixture to loosen it, then fold in the rest of the egg whites.

Spoon into prepared tin and bake until risen and set (about 55 minutes) The cake will still be a little gooey in the middle. It may look a little cracked as it develops a crust and can be quite fragile, but htis is normal.

Cool completely in tin.

This is quite a dense cake. This recipe makes two 23cm round cakes also. I split them, add filling then cover in buttercream - sometimes piped on. A single cake is high enough.
