Where and how do poor folks retire?

They are pretty much trailer parks for the retired with only average means.

Business opportunity in New Zealand if councils would permit it.

True. I think there's a few business opportunities for this kind of thing. There will be so many people unable to afford anything permanent in retirement. Co-housing models seems to be on the increase. Not so much for older folk per se but certainly an option for people who can't afford whole properties by themselves. It's my version of hell on earth but for many people it's a good option if done well.

Just found out that to live in the retirement duplex, nearby, is not $670,000 but close to a million.
Option no 1
Buy an older property in the North, like Kaipara, Kaitaia or even Whangarei. In a section with land, enough for a minor dwelling. Build a carport with a bathroom, meet Council requirements. Erect a 30 m square outbuilding, with your choice of materials. And make it home.
An idea ..... and ....how to make this work.

I know a couple who want to retire in Thailand or somewhere with cheap living,

There has been a big change where 'retired kiwis' can now still be paid there superannuation Lots closed off to Kiwis 20th Nov if you read Winz site for where Super is now able to be paid to. Was checking some recently, ok if you return every 26 weeks and live in NZ 26 weeks but full time now not so many on the list.. I always thought a nice Greek Island would be nice.

Yes, yes it looks very nice inside. Except... its a tin box, you will melt inside of it without aircon in summer (it doesn't have it). Also despite how well staged the photos are and how modern and nice the decor is, 1 fart will remind you real quick of just how enclosed you are.

Definitely still enjoy ourselves. Have a few hobbies and the kids. Wouldn't change my life for anything.

Yes... big trailer / caravan parks would be ideal, but of course not in the suburb that I live in !! They would have to be somewhere else, perhaps in another town / city..

We should send all poor people to Auckland Island, that would certainly be away from your suburb.

If I sold my house, paid my mortgage off, lawyers etc I would have about $175K so where could I go? No bridges nearby to live under . . .
Any brilliant, or even not so brilliant, ideas welcome.
TIA

I would build a houseboat and live in it. I would probably have to move it regularly.

That's all fine and dandy until they become ill and need serious medical assistance, finding its either not available or very, very expensive.

Worth checking as I believe medical is covered under the govt bond scheme. The bond used to be 50kUS.
We have friends with an apartment in Phuket and live the dream.

Make a will fair, make it even, and tell everyone before hand what you are doing so there are no nasty surprises for anyone.

Not necessarily. Anyone can contest anything.

I know a family-a sister had a crack at a brother over the parents estate. Three weeks later he had a stroke and died.

There’s always Sicily for 1 euro or Costa Rica for a bit more.

I don't have any suggestions for the OP, but do people know you are allowed borders and don't have to even declare the income to the tax department.. or the social welfare department, unless you are getting "extras" off the dept ? "extras" being power or accommodation.. And.. you are allowed up to four of them, and can charge what's an annually adjusted amount, which was 250 dollars a week.. Just over actually.. Oh, and that 250 is each.. No need to declare it.

One boarder is enough !

Well hello there... And happy new years to you.

Yes I was amazed to find that out. My accountant told me when I was having a young fellah to stay for a while. I could hardly believe it, but checked up and it's true.. One of life's little hidden scams..
