I to am still enjoying reading my library books, go online to the library catalogue about every 2months and order about 15-20 books. They let you know by email when ready to pickup and lucky for me the library is only 5 min walk away, Even though its terribly lazy I love nothing more than lying in bed all day reading and watching movies/ TV shows online, (not to often). It saves so much money, if i'm out and about I pop into sushi shop, then the warehouse or supermarket.

I think a huge part of budgeting is being prepared.
I brought chicken on special at the Mad butchers last week. 3.3 kgs of boneless and skinless chicken breast - you only pay an extra $1 per kilo to get it skinless as well and I think you more than save that in the weight of the skin I would throw away. And 2 trays of drumsticks. For $60

I chopped up the chicken all into cubes and froze in 5 meal size portions in snaplock bags (I get all the air out and make them flat to stack), all ready to put in a stir fry, butter chicken, satay chicken.
The drumsticks I skinned one tray and put them in the crockpot (with Sticky chicken mix) for that nights dinner as we were out all that day, and then at the same time I skinned the other tray and put in a large snaplock bag with the sticky chicken mix and popped in the freezer.
Now If I know I have a crazy day and no time for crockpot prep in the morning I can just get my bag out the night before and flick a switch in the morning.
Took about an hour to do...... but I had the time to do it... and now it will pay me back in 7 easy prep meals. Costing around $8.50 for the meat portion - thats the upper end of my budget for 4 adults - but its good quality and easy.

I am off straight after work tonigh to visit a new mum in hospital - So have got a lasagne out of the freezer, it will just need whoever is home first to pop it in the microwave - I have a whirpool with a grill function so you still get a nice crispy top.

Got a trade me Bargain. I buy Iams Cat food, its much cheaper to buy it in 10kgs sacks (We have 3 cats)
3 Kgs retails at $50.90 ($16.96 per kg)
10 Kgs retails at $125.90 ($12.59 per kgs - which is why I always buy it that way as its 25% cheaper in bulk)
I brought an unused 10kg sack on Trade me with a March 2013 date for $90 - so that's only $9 per kilo.... saving me a further $35 (or 47% from the 3kg price) - got to love that.
Animates have a loyalty scheme but that works out at about 6% - so still a bargain.
In the words of Richard Till its about shopping smarter people.
I have gone back to Pak n Save for my shopping and it really is considerably cheaper, I always shopped at Countdown as it was so convenient, but now I have moved I have to drive past Pak n Save to get to one.... On sunday I had to pop a bottle of wine in the trolley to get to $400 (hadn't been for 4 weeks) - I paid for it in 2 parts so got 2 x 10c Petrol coupons - (1 for me 1 for DD) And then on top of that got handed a spot prize of a rice cooker! Filled up with gas on the way home and saved $6.70.
I treat it like a game and really feel I am winning this week.....

Just wash your chickpeas and cover them with plenty of water in the crockpot,
no need to soak. Cook until soft, around 8 hours depending on how fresh the
chickpeas are. Some are quite old and take longer top cook.
Congratulations to your Miss 14 on becoming vegetarian.
I admire such principles at a young age. Dont think you should be telling her that vegetarians eat chicken and fish though as she will find out soon enough that if you eat chicken and fish you are not vegetarian and will be disappointed that you are not telling her the truth. I will bump up the vegetarian thread in Recipes, there are great recipes there.

hi girls, did ya miss me, I have been trying to sort out my library, the kids gave me an erader for my birthday, and its been abit of a mission trying to get used to it ( well its in the shop now getting fixed) but keeping up with tecknology is amazingly hard sometimes when its the unknown.........but I have been reading so much and have found that all the books I wanted to read wern't in NZ so have been getting them in from Amazon and then once read have been onselling them again so otheres can read them, but now that I have progressed i have found there are so many sites out there that have free ebooks on them that it is just as good as going to the library and instant, theres no cues waiting for people to bring back books, theres no waiting list while you work you way down the boopk list, so i guess I have found a new love,And i now have ADD with it, i am on a downloading frenzy do any of you have one????

I can never be bothered going to pak n save... i have a countdown 5 min walk from me and go past it all the time. I do like the reduced to clear items at countdown. I got some family sized mince and cheese pies the other night for $2.25 each, usually $5 something, ate one straight away and other 3 into the freezer. 95% of the meat I buy is reduced to clear... nothing wrong with it, either eat by the next day or freeze. However all the money i'm trying to save by buying food bargains is going on fishing lures and rod at the moment..... at $8-$12 for a lure you dont want to be loosing them.

Can't have this thread disapearing....

I was at the supermarket last night and they had cottage cheese (With Garlic & Chive - shortdated) reduced to clear for 25c a pot! I brought 4 for a whole $1 - Will have one fresh on toast or crackers - put the other 3 in the freezer - and will make the meatloaf and the flan from the cottage cheese thread... and the winner will be made again..... Got to love a bargain. The flan will mean we will feed our family of 4 for about $1 lol. Then I can take the savings and splurge out on a Roast......

Just did my monthly shop at Pak n Save, Paid for it in 3 stages. That way I have 3 x 20c off a litre of fuel. Saved $14 today and potentially 2 other members of my family will save the same. I spent $450, the last $150 I was $10 short so scanned my treat bottle of bubbles again, which brought it over $150.... then I went and got another off the shelf. That was $10.99, so I got the wine and still saved another $3...plus what the other 2 family members save... bonus!!!
I wont shop now till December and that one will be a doozy as it will be my last big shop till after Christmas.... and we have $640 worth of Pak n Save xmas club money to spend. (I direct payment $50 per month)... SORTED!!

Just revamping and cutting costs. I have always had the use of a work phone 24/7 (Free calls and Txts) and up until now have run a seperate personal. But needs must and I am looking at ways to cut costs. Reduced DH phone plan by $20 as he didn't use all he had, put the Family plan from my account to his so raised it $20 which makes it stay the same. BUT changed my phone from Account to prepay...for a $20 top up a year, i can keep my number and save a whopping $65 a month. $760 a year!! We also decided we never watched SKY movies and had 4 magazines unopened, so I called and cancelled the magazine and movies and saved over $240 a year... So thats $1000 and all it took was 10 mins at a vodafone shop and 5 mins on the phone.... Bonus!

Pak n Save had 18 Purex Rolls for $6 yesterday, cheapest I have seen the nice toilet paper for a very long time. Time to stock up. My family think I have a loo roll fetish... I just never pay full price for it.
That makes it 33c a roll, the same price as budget.
Another product close to my heart - Lindauer Sav Bubbles - $8.99 at New World this week, time to buy a box for the silly season.
I also noticed in the countdown flyer - Watties Baked Beans and spaghetti - 5 for $5, Its been a while since its been this price.
I am lucky, I do my main shop at Pak n Save but have all the main ones close and I can cherry pick the specials.
When buying my veggies on Sunday - they had 2 milk for $6 - I have heard of people saying about it but up till now none of my local veggie shops seem to be offering it. So I brought 4 and put 2 in the freezer.

Look after the cents and the $$$ will look after themselves. And remember its not a bargain if its extra to what you would normally buy.

Thanks so much for keeping us posted on what you save and where....I must admit that after hubby got his pay rise last year, I have hardly paid attention to our budget, but after reading this I am inspired once again to get with the program ! I have $500 on my PnS Xmas club and all presents were bought and paid via the internet , and all were on sale. I have been lazy when it comes to my saving though, this is first year we have been able to treat ourselves , but next year is a new year, and after reading this I am ready to start our budget again, thanks to you !

Bumpity bump. Because there seems to be a lot of talk about how people should be careful with money so they don't end up in the foodbank queue. This thread may hold the key for some who otherwise wouldn't know that you can have a decent meal for under $5 and can decrease the costs of daily life with the right 'know-how'.

Hi all. I have been reading this thread since its beginning and keep coming back to it. Yesterday I went in search of a USB for storing documents from my computer. I found 16GB USB' at The Warehouse for under $12. This was even cheaper than their 8GB USB which were almost $20. Have a great year.

Hmmm.
20c off fuel.
My tank is 50 litres, at $1.99 a litre it would be $99 if it was dry.
Save $10, but to do that I have to spend $200?
I'm lucky to spend that a month at a supermarket.
Not worth it.
Loo paper, $10 for 40 rolls at Warehouse.
Meat - never from a supermarket, they are too expensive, buy 3 times a year in bulk elsewhere.
Veges, fruit, same, too expensive from supermarkets. Grow most things, the few I don't, I go to the vege places, Whenuapai, Swanson Rd and Glen Eden, depending on what and when.
Xmas clubs, don't have any, don't do any big food spends at Xmas.
Green Valley milk is 2 x 2l for $5.50.

Your a regular bundle of joy....
Don't like cheap toilet paper - I personally think its a false economy and seems to be used up twice as fast.
I saved 30c a litre this weekend.... I have 4 adults in this family and frequently entertain so $200 is easily done - 70 plus tank and I will save $21 - worth having in anyones book.

My ultimate buy a couple of weeks ago was Pak n save specialing off Hellers Pork meatballs - normally $7.99 (far too much) and they had trolleys full for $1.20 a packet.... I brought lots and the butchers assistant kept trying to make me take more as they were so over stocked - but I hadn't tried them so was a little hesitant - needn't have been as they are lovely and we cook up 1.5 packets at a time to feed 4 adults for a grand sum of $1.80!!!

The garden is keeping us in courgettes and lebanese cucumbers - had our first feed of runner beans and the tomatoes will be ready soon. mmmmm

I agree toadfish re: loo rolls. That is one thing I will not do is buy cheap ones, most of them tend to be single ply or feel like sandpaper. I usually stock up on Kleenex or Sorbent when on special. Also with petrol, there are only two of us so rarely do a big enough spend at the supermarket to get the big fuel discount. I have smart fuel on my AA card so shop where fuel discounts are and BP/Caltex still do 6c off with more than a $40 spend and we also get a smart fuel discount with our monthly power bill, so it does mount up. I saved over $30 on a fill last week as we had just put new tyres on my car and the supplier gave a 50c smart fuel discount, plus the other discounts on the card. Being retired, every little bit helps and this thread is so full of tips to save.

I will also only ever but watties baked beans and spaghetti, ETA Mayo, Craigs breakfast marmalade, Sunsilk (black) shampoo and conditioner... mmm what else can't think at the moment. But waiting till they are on a good special and then stocking up brings them to the same price as the budget range sometimes even cheaper.

I usually try the plain brands and make a call to run with it or go back to the tried and true. I like to live a champagne life on a beer budget. Not a Beer life on a beer budget if that makes sense.

Dinner last night was a budgeters dream.
I made a twist on a Zuchinni Pie/Fritatta.
I used Zuchinnis from my garden. Grated those and added chopped onion, some left over ham, grated carrot, mixed herbs, S&P and mixed all this together with 4 eggs and then placed half cherry tomatoes all over the top (from my garden) and a little sprinkling of edam.
Think the whole fritatta would have cost less than $2-3 and fed our family of 4 adults. I served it with 1/2 corn cob (6 for $5) and a roll (reduced to clear and from the freezer $2.80 for 20)
Think I fed 4 adults for well under $5 all up and the big thing... it was delicious!!! (and low fat and healthy)

My hint is to buy a silicone flan dish (when they are 50% off at briscoes)- they make the best fritatta as nothing sticks..... (I also have a square silicone dish I could have used but the flan makes it look like a quiche) I took the above less ham to a shared lunch at work last week and it was the talk of the table especially the vegetarians - it cost next to nothing and was much nicer than the shop brought contibutions.

Yipppeee just did my large shop at Pak n Save (about 3 weeks worth) and paid for it in 3 portions. We now have 3 fuel dockets for 40c. I will save about $28 and my 2 daughters will save about $20 each - so thats a household fuel saving of $68. I was $5 short of the last one so got them to scan a size 20 chicken that was on special for $10.79 and went back and got another one after I had finished paying etc so as not to hold people up - so I guess that's free and we still get to save money.

My hint this week - be careful that you don't assume what people would prefer. My parents birthdays are 1 week apart. Last Saturday morning we went to a cafe for breakfast for Mums (My girls work Saturday during the day and night so breakfast was the only meal of the day we could get together). Today is Dads and we asked him if he wanted to go out or come here for a good Kiwi BBQ breakie. And he would prefer to come here. The cafe cost us $117 for 6. I will make it for about $25 with more variety (ie fruit juice and multiple coffees teas etc - instead of 1 flat white each)... and its what he wants.
