I think there is a Tauranga and District stamp club.
Held at Wesley Centre in 13 avenue, with meetings twice a month.
Perhaps there is something listed in your yellow pages. Or you could try listing a few on trademe and see how they go.

Those older Stamps look really great as a full sheet.
They look too large for a stock book though,
just wondering what storage people use for full sheets,
to keep them from getting folds or tone.

Stock books for mint sheets are made ,you might want to contact one of the major dealers as they will more than likely have some in stock.
(philatelic) is one that may help.Put a question on their auctions.Donaldo is another.

Could someone please tell me how to contact a reputable dealer/collector in the Auckland area. Have a fairly large collection of first day covers and various stamps from all around the world and would like them looked at.

Try Google or the Yellow pages.

Thanks. Do the Yellow Pages tell you if someone is reputable too? Was really hoping for a recommendation.

Had a look and all are reputable but get at least two different appraisals.

I'm a little confused. Why have all donaldo's entries been deleted by a moderator. I was scrolling back to reread an answer he had given me to one of my questions and they have all gone?

Was sorting out some postcards for listing. Have come across some with stamps on. And as I know nothing about stamps. Where would I find an indication of pricing. I have googled, but there are so many out there. e.g 2d Queen elizabeth, brown in colour. I cannot find any on TM. of this particular one. I am almost giving up before starting.

cariadog.. If you look under NZ Postcards, in the trademe expired listings, you will see what some have sold for.Perhaps show the front and back of the postcard when you list it, so as to increase interest in collectors of stamp usage as well as collectors of pictures.

Thanks for the tip Willy. I have just done that now with some that have stamps. I was told that once they are used, they do not have much value at all.

We've just been helping my father clean out his attic and came across a leather bound book full of chinese stamps - all mint condition, dating fromm 1968-1971. Some are VERY interesting, depicting chinese soldiers spearing enemies wearing helmets with US on them. Apparantly my grandfather was in China in 1971-72 and these stamps were given to him as a gift. Dad wants me to find out more info about them, including price in case he needs to get them covered by insurance. Any ideas where to go??? Websites, etc?

Anybody interested in a 1966 Soccer World cup set? Also have some NZ 1/2 cent, 1 cent, 2 cent & 3 cent stamps.

Heres a starting point.

A Stanley Gibbons catalogue from a library would also be useful.
Remember these are dealers prices not what you would get if selling.
Enjoy.

I agree Gary. If personal details or other inflammatory material need to be removed then so be it - but only those messages.

Hi Chefman1 What stamps do you collect ?
I see some nice ones came out yesterday with Sir Peter Blake on.
I Remember how Sir Peter Blake really enthused the nation with those Lucky red Sox.
Anyone seen the cancel on the Peter Blake FDC ?

Ok, I don't want to stir any pots, but I enjoy Don's contributions in the coin thread as well. Maybe we need to individually or as a group ask TM to reconsider, given Don's positive contributions both to this thread and the Coin thread, as well as the commercial benefit TM sees out of both these threads?

Would an e-mail campaign (all sent in a certain time frame with the same heading, for example) be best, or maybe a thread in support of him that we draw to TM's attention? I realise it might come to nothing, but I think TM is being irrational to a certain point.

Getting back to stamps.
When putting stamps on envelopes these days,
Is the storage lifespan between gummed ( Lickable ) envelopes
and self adhesive envelopes different ?

Never use a self-adhesive (ie pressure sensitive) envelope if you want to keep it for philatelic purposes as the gum will go brown in time , loose its adhesion and eventually brown all the paper around it. It can get so bad that you can see it through to the front of an envelope. I think self-adhesive flaps will eventually destroy an item.
Sometimes the browning starts as soon as 5 years after use and once it starts it happens quite readily. The options then are to have the gum chemically treated (not really practical) or to cut the flpas off which is what I have done in many cases.
Old gum arabic or moisture activated gums seem to be permanent and don't break down and only go brown in exception circumstances such as long exposure to damp tropical conditions. I never use self-adhesive envelopes for something I want to last. regards, Steven

Only time will tell. The world's first self-adhesive stamp issued by the USA in 1968 often suffers badly and goes very brown but strangely not always.
Most stamp issuers are aware of this potential problem and use good quality self-adhesive gums with long tern stability.

I have been well aware of the breaking down of the self adhesive envelopes for many years, and have warned collectors that if they are going to produce special postal envelopes to steer clear of self adhesive envelopes - that is why they are so cheap, and purchase the more expensive types as similar to the type NZPost use for their FDCs. I think the main thing with the self adhesive stamps is to ensure that you keep them in a very dry part of your house, that they have no heavy weight put on them, and don't store in plastic envelopes long term. Much of the breakdown can be attributed to dampness, excessive heat, or improper care. Do not store your collections in cold / moist wardrobes, above the ceilings or hotwater cupboards, I have been amazed at how many collectors do this. I have always wondered how the 1996 Health Teddy Bear flaw would hold up, sighted one I sold years ago - just a few month ago, it was still in sound condition. If these adhesive stamps do start breaking down, the Dealer / Collector community are just going to have to accept this as being part and parcel of the issue, and they will be priced accordingly.

Gummed envelopes are a must....and self adhesive a no-no
It sounds like those self adhesive stamps may get crusty too.
Is the 1991 Wren, New Zealand's oldest self adhesive stamp ?

I see that rebel58 had a message deleted by a moderator. as I recall it was to mention the Christchurch Stamp fair that is held regularly. This is a shame that promoting this club event is deemed against the rules. I would have thought promoting stamp collecting would be in Trade me's interests. The Christchurch stamp club has been promoted regularly in the past, are we being watched more closely now?

Stak.
A pity about that but I will be at the church hall in Papanui on Saturday to pick up some Trademe winnings from twg1935.As far as I know Gary Tavendale doesn't have any rules about advertising or talking about Trademe at the stamp fair.In fact I am sure that you can see all of his Trademe listings on display at the Fair.Pretty damn decent of him really considering the small minded attitude Trademe has to promoting stamp collecting.Perhaps we can hear from Gary if he has any such gagging rules at the stamp fair?Even so I will be at the door at 9.30 this Saturday, perhaps we can meet up and talk stamps?
Regards Paul.

Yes, Paul correct, no gagging rules at Stampfair about discussing Trade Me. Yes, I do have alot of my Trade Me listings on show.
Also I would like to confirm that Paul is not my brother.
All different sources are a plus for the collector. Be it Stamp Clubs, Stamp Dealers (both fulltime & part time), Stamp Auctions, Stamp Shows & Fairs. All play an important part in the hobby of Stamp Collecting.
There are enough things to worry about, without knocking each other.

Regards Gary.

Your phone may have a USB port, in which case you may be able to plug the phone right into the computer, which could then recognise it as another drive on the computer. Look for it in "My Computer" if that's the case.

If that does not work, depending on the type of phone you have and your service provider, you may be able to e-mail the photos to an e-mail account, then get them into your computer.

Hi nutslap,

Asking the value of your stamps is a bit like asking how long is a piece of string. If you can put up some photos that would be great as you will get some help from people on here. The Len Jury site will be great for NZ stamps but please keep in mind that condition is everything in the stamp world. The prices in catalogues are for fine used from a dealer. Typically stamps would sell on here for roughly 10 - 30% of the listed catalogue price. For your overseas stamps it might be good to get a Stanley Gibbons catalogue from a library to give you an idea of value. Searching expired auctions on here would also be helpful. It will take you a bit of time but you never know you might unearth a gem! Hope that this is of some help.
