Good evening, I thought I would get back to knitting tonight also after a 16 year break. Thought I would start with some booties, found an old pattern, which asks for seed st, could someone tell me is this the same as moss st
aternating K1 P1 1st row and then p1 Ki the next? Thanks in advance

yes, I think it's what the Americans call it, whereas we normally call it moss stitch - welcome back to the knitting needles

it's great to be back knitting isn't it seafield. I picked it up again in February when our daughter told us she was expecting - I had given away all my needles, wool etc around 20 years ago as I never thought I would knit again. Life just got too busy with kids, work, MrK's health and my study. Now I can enjoy it all over again :)

morning :) mmmmm burnt orange... she will be easily spotted on the horse stud!
I finished the second front to the wee cardy last night and the bands. will get the sleeves done over the weekend. Also have one crochet bootie to make for the pair, they do look pretty in white with pink polka dot ribbon and pearly beads :). So girly! I had a thought this morning - these booties will no doubt be the first of many many pairs of impractical shoes for our Maddy lol. But I really need to get these lawns mowed (need 2 hours of no rain pleaseeeeee!).
Happy knitting :)

Morning everyone.

Isn't it odd that at some stage we seem to give it all away, knitting etc... Mum and I did the same thing. But it sure doesn't take long to recoup everything and get into it bigtime again.
Im 3/4rs the way to the armhole on the cardy. Didn't get much knitting done yesterday. Wont get any done this morning either most likely.
Gotta cut the mans hair, then wash the floors etc. Dam housework lol

I might even get the washing hung outside today. Its lovely out there. But I don't think its meant to be. lol

Feeling a lot better this morning., Still have the cough but its not as heavy as it was. Yay

Have a productive day every one.

I must be one of the more unusual ones, in that I've never stopped knitting or crocheting, although I've done other things as well in the way of hobbies, like macrame, cake decorating, teddy bear making, jewellery making, but I've always knitted and crocheted. There wouldn't be many days of the year when I don't do a little bit of "yarn craft". Hoping to go to the supermarket this morning to spend $50 on meat to get a 25c a litre fuel voucher, and hoping that I can get away without spending too much more than that, but I need fruit and veg too, so we will see.

I'm hoping to get stuck in and sort out the tunic I'm knitting for myself otherwise I won't need it till next year, and I should really sew together the one I knitted autumn last year and still haven't sewn up.

lawns almost finished, just come in to have a quick drink as it's getting quite warm out there - wearing jeans and t shirt! It's begining to cloud over so better move this tushy and get the last bit done - half an hour pleaseeeeee!!!!

I used to sew hush puppy dogs, lost count of how many I made. Lost the pattern too sadly, wish I had it now.
I need to go into garden and pull out a few things, just that it annoys MrP cos hes not able to do it anymore. but its soo nice out there I might have to make a small start.
Have finally got some housework done. With resting and wheezing inbetween lol.

No rain clouds etc here so I think youll be fine Kiwimade

Good on you Kiwimade - nice feelings of achievement?
So pleased that you are feeling a bit better Popeye.
Enjoy your renewed knitting enthusiasm seafield it is a great hobby to have.

I'm like you Kuaka I have always knitted - lived in the tropics for several years but still had to have some knitting on the go, mainly made things in darker colours and everything needed washing as soon as finished as I tended to sweat on them rather a lot lol.

Been looking on line re knitting on planes it seems that it is ok at the moment although they prefer circular type needles but I think that is so you don't poke your neighbour too often. I'm flying to Tonga this week so will give it a go but don't want to lose my new needles.

Happy knitting for the evening all

jayemtoo - 2013-08-03 15:22:00

jayemtoo - I knitted and crocheted last time I flew, but just in case there was any problems I took old needles and hooks so that if they did get confiscated I wouldn't be too upset. I also took a book in case I couldn't use the needles or hooks

I learnt to knit very young, and did so from when I was about eight. Then knitted and crotcheted for years after that mainly for necessity. Still remember the embarrassment of having a hand knitted cardy at intermediate school. Then used to do baby knitting for friends and then my baby. As my young one was high health needs I was kept really busy for the next 12 years or so, and now the knitting has come back in vogue, nieces are asking for hand knitting again for their babies. The quilt guild I belong to also does knitting for Middlemore which I would like to get involved with, easier to do in the evening than the quilts that I make.

I also leant to knit and sew early . got my first sewing machine at six and needles from England with rainbow wool. my mum used to knit fairiels cardys with matching hats and smoked dresses, and patton lever shoes and long white bobby socks. I went to a small country school and use to swap clothes the poor kids, to me they had better stuff than me that is why I still wear rags today have a great day

my grandmother taught me to knit when I was around seven years old and she knitted for every grandchild and she had around 20 of them :). She also knitted for prem babies so was rarely without needles in her hands. My other grandmother sewed and was sewing wedding dresses up until the last couple of years of her life. She sewed all the priests garb and cloths for the altar. I was very lucky to have them both in my life :)
Happy knitting :)

Morning all. Mum taught me how to knit, I think I was about 8ish. Ill take a photo later of the first thing I knitted, cos I got a pattern book the other day with it in.
I was always fascinated at mum knitting while watching tv lol.
I learnt to sew when I was 9. cos it was around or just after dad dying. Mum had a green Husqvarna machine. She took is some piece work to help the money situation. She didn't like it so I ended up doing it. Was simply putting a hem on a square of fabric which was then used for jack in the boxes. But I started making clothes then too. I remember the first nightie I made, a summer one in purple.

Used to get really excited when the Wayne and Wentworth fabric parcels arrived. it was like Christmas.
I went on to be a machinist in several factories.
Have made friends wedding dresses and loads of baby stuff.

I am really pleased I learnt how to do these things, must have saved megabucks over the year eh.

Will finish the front of the cardy today , I got side tracked in the garden yesterday.
Have a good day

Hello all, I haven't had much time for the internet lately but have been thinking of you all. Gosh we are all dedicated knitters/crafters aren't we. I started knitting when I was 9, and also sew, cross stitch, do card making, beaded jewellery. make teddy bears etc. I too tend to knit in winter and sew in summer.
Am frantically knitting for four babies due in September, have so much to do but getting through it now.
I remember my mum getting the Wayne Wentworth parcels too, was always very exciting.
I knitted an owl toy for a baby shower but I'm not sure if it's nice enough to give as a gift (I have something else to give as well). My family haven't been very complimentary about it, so I will put a pic on here later and see what you all think.
Am very tired today, our neighbours had guests last night who meandered and yahooed down our shared driveway between midnight and 2.15am as they left. I didn't get to sleep until after 4am, hubby started snoring as the last people left next door........ I kicked him, put my cold feet on him, pinched his nose - all to no avail. He does have a CPAP machine but had taken the mask off as it got uncomfortable.
Time for a coffee methinks, have a good day everyone xoxo

Wayne and Wentworth sell on here. I cant remember their trading name but I don't think they would be too hard to find.
Ive often wondered if it cost a lot to return what you didn't want.

Ive done cross stitching, and brought beads but never really got into that. Never tried card making cos Im not artistic for that.
I used to love doing the nail pictures with cotton. And the weaving done on a small wooden frame. Using this net sort of stuff and you tie the junctions where they cross. To make doilies etc.
I have the daisy disc, that I used to make daisy's on, and made hundreds when I was a kid to line a wall of our Hutt.. But I cant remember how to make them lol.

I will do this photo while I think of it too.

This is the first thing I knitted, the female version on the right. We called them Gonks for some reason

http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/full/278272766.jpg

Also in the picture is the daisy discs we used to make all the little daisys.

This is a pic of some strange "needles" I assume it is a version of a cable needle. Got them in a mixed lot ages ago. Would they be a cable needle?

http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/full/278272792.jpg

popeye333 - 2013-08-04 12:28:00
1874

Yes popeye, they're designed to hang down I think so they don't slip off as you do the cable - at least that's what I imagine. I've got a couple too that I bought in a job lot and I've never used them. I also have some cable needles that have a sort of "v" in the middle and I find them good.

I remember gonks. Actually we used think that my boss looked like a gonk - we used to laugh about it behind his back

Ok opinions please, as per my previous post I'm not too sure if this is good enough to give as part of a baby shower gift. Would be grateful for your thoughts :)

maible, he's gorgeous. I'd be honoured to give it if i were you.
Havn't been on here lately as we had been planning the orchard (and berry match) out on our 20 acres and finally yesterday my 14 fruit trees were planted out. Still another 13 coming from dad's so please forgive me if I'm not around much over the next few weeks. Am still planning the berry patch, we have strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cranberries, blueberries, gooseberries, gojiberries and red and black currants to design an area for. Not much knitting being done.

Maible he's really cute - yes a baby would love him, only thing is if the baby has an older sibling he might get "stolen".

I learnt to knit as a seven year old on a pair of booties for baby sister but think I only ever got one finished, maybe that is where I get the aversion for knitting the second part of a pair hence like doing 2 at a time where ever possible.

I have a daisy disc like that Popeye which I seem to have inherited from somewhere but no idea how to use it. An elderly aunt used to make bedcovers from wool daisies.

jayemtoo - 2013-08-04 15:28:00

Thanks for your input ladies. This will be the first child so no older siblings to steal toys. One of our dogs has his eye on it though. All the best with your planting kiwimade, a lot of work but very exciting. I can stop stressing about the owl now and get back to my knitting xo

I think the owl is lovely... don't listen to your family Maible. He will be loved Im sure. Just make sure those bits at the top are secure.

Ohh whiskey you lucky thing having an orchard and berry patch. We have blackberries (thorn less) raspberry's, not thorn less sadly lol and passion fruit. Plus a loaded lemon tree and a tiny mandarin. All on our tiny wee section. We grew strawberries in spouting attached to the fence for a couple of years, but nine times out of ten the birds beat us to them.

I will keep the cable needles handy then cos they will be much safer to use, without the fear of dropping the stitches.Lol at the Gonk Boss hahaha.

This chocolate Nepp wool I got from Deramores for the cardy is going a long way. I've done the back and one front and only a little way into the third ball. Well to me it feels like its going a long way.

I got 10 so am thinking I might have enough to do a wee jumper. I loved the cross over neck jumper someone put on facebook. it was in greys mauves etc, Ill have to hunt back and see who it was.
Then I will get back into toys.

Thanks all, yes popeye I have thoroughly secured the little bits on top - they are knotted several times and stitched through as well. I'm paranoid about things like that. Did you find the little jumper, I'm thinking it was maybe the pureperium one, which I am knitting at the moment. Here's the link in case it's the one you wanted... http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/puerperium-cardigan

Im the same when it comes to bit on toys Maible. Yes with some looking from the first page of this thread I managed to find the pattern. It was a waistcoat and cardy. And done in blues lol... My memory was a bit off lol. Whiskey has it. I left a message on facebook too and she has already copied it for me and will post tomorrow.
Im thinking Ill have enough wool to do 2 vests or maybe a vest and cardy.

That's a cute pattern too... I looked on ravelry for the other one, theres soo many patterns on there. Its just as addictive as Deramores lol

popeye333 - 2013-08-04 17:53:00
1885

Glad you found something popeye, I just spotted your post on the facebook group. I'm totally addicted to Ravelry and am just waiting on my 4th Deramores order....ooops ;)

maible - 2013-08-04 18:01:00
1886

Oops is a word permanently linked to Deramores in this house too lol. My sister in law wants to order some more wool, but is taking so long to get her money together that I snuck in the order for the wool for MrPs cardy lol.

I need a few more sales before I can buy more. There is also a Denim Nepp wool similar to the chocolate one Im knitting. So I think somehow there will be some of the blue in my next order.

morning ladies :) I love the owl too, can't see why it shouldn't be included in the baby's gifts. Finger, toes and anything that can be crossed this week and hope I get my pay. Rates demands arrived so it is needed more than ever.
Glad you found your pattern popeye, nothing more frustrating than knowing what you want to do next and not having the right stuff!
Happy knitting :)

morning girls bit foggy down here and a wee bit nippy too, getting my glasses today so can see to sew, sat up late doing this hat/scarf off to hang out washing be back later

Lovely and sunny here this morning, no wind, but it is a bit chilly so I have the heat pump going. Hoping it's going to warm up later otherwise I will be telling myself I should have lit the woodfire, not that my back will allow me to lug firewood up the steps from where it's stored on the lower level. It's no better. Still very sore, and making walking, sitting, bending very difficult and uncomfortable. I should be putting clean sheets on the bed today but I can't face that, so I suppose I will just sit and knit and tell myself that the more I rest, the quicker it will improve. Took some strong painkillers on Saturday but ended up feeling very sick, so just on panadol now. They ease the pain but don't kill it. I shouldn't complain as I know there are lots far worse off then me.

kuaka - 2013-08-05 08:50:00

Morning all.. Im late, lol didn't feel like getting out of bed this morning.
We have a light riaa but nothing drastic. Although Bob cat thinks its bad enough not to want to go outside in it lol The sook.

Fingers crossed for you Kiwimade, its high time they got that mess sorted.

Yay Carole, I need new glasses but Im making doo. Thankfully you can adjust the text size on my e-reader lol
Ohh Kuaka, I hate bad backs. Im in the same position, cant stand or sit long either.
Mines my lower back and I have learnt to lay on my side, draw my knees up to my tummy and kinda poke ya butt out, thus stretching the spine. Then make yourself relax. Its the only way to ease it for me. When mine goes bad I either use MrPs walker or my office chair. Its been that bad that I started losing my right leg and would have to drag it.
Hope you get some relief. Can you take neurophen or codeine perhaps?

Im feeling inspired knitting wise. Theres now soo much I want to do.

Have a good day all

It was the nurophen that made me feel very chundery, I've got some paracetamol and codeine and find they are okay.

popeye, I'm thinking of getting a Kindle - is that what you've got?

Pattern is in the mail today popeye.
I saw a hat dad was wearing last week and I am going to try and knit one the similar way.
It had a piece knitted that goes around the head like a headband and then the stitches were picked up in the round and you then knit the crown. I have an unfinished cowl that I could adapt for it so will see how I go.

Kuaka, the codeine will be good take it with the panadol. they work better. But make sure you eat well so you don't get bunged up.
Thanks Whiskey, cant wait. but have to wait till I have got the cardy done.

That hat sounds different.. I have one mum got from somewhere. By the looks of it, its knitted in one piece, and I think its started with two stitches then increased, the top is gathered together.
I call it my night light cos I wear it in bed and pull it over my eyes for complete darkness.
It does have a wee hole in it, so if it starts to come apart, Ill undo the seam and figure out how it was made. its very comfortable.
My SIL sent me a parcel which arrived today. A skirt the same as the one I love to wear and a top. Its funny cos the top is probably not something I would have chosen for myself. but it looks lovely on. And feels right too.

Sent to me in the Deramores bag that brought our combined order here, which I then sent her share to her in, and now its back. A right yo-yo bag lol

Am a third of the way up the second front. I am going to have to hunt out a very long zip. the one my sil sent up is no where near long enough. Will check out the oppies first, as well as here of course.

Sun is shining now. but windy

carol, when I had my reading glasses done, the optician made it so it was easier to read the computer screen - there is something they do to make them 'computer literate' if that makes sense. I needed to be able to read the screen for my uni studies and for in the classroom.
Have spent my morning unravelling yarn - the Furry One lept up (oomgg that JR can jump!) and pinched a brand new ball of yarn off my desk. It was wayyyy at the back too! The yarn ended up wrapped around the coffee table, down the hall, into the bedroom, under the bed and around the bed legs, back down the hall, through the kitchen and around the dining room table before I could get it out of his mouth. Little buggar!!
I should have known he was about to do that too as I could tell by his body language he was scheming something! Just as well we love him!

kiwimade64 - 2013-08-05 12:56:00
1896

Oh Kuaka, forgot to add. I have a Kindle not sure if there is other names for it. it was a parallel import from warehouse stationery. from Memory about $220 I think.

Ohh wow Kiwimade, what a little horror lol. My friend has a JR too called Pei'cye (sp) and the other night friend foolishly put her dinner down to go get something and said dog quick as a flash had the pork crackle off her plate.
I told her she couldn't growl, she put it in harms way. Should have put the dinner up lol

popeye333 - 2013-08-05 13:08:00
1897

popeye, yes the tabs are codeine plus paracetamol - doc gave them to me last year when I had a sore throat just in time for my birthday - I suppose a sore back makes a change from a sore throat which is what I usually seem to suffer from if I ever get sick.

I was asking about the kindle popeye. I'm thinking of getting one. Apparently there are different models of Kindle as well as other brands. Just wondering which one you have, I would want to read it in bed so would prefer one with a light on the screen, but I believe the "paper-white" are good. I'd also like an ipad but not sure I want to buy both right now.

Just out of interest does anyone use the birchwood needles that I have seen round. They say that they are better for the hands, in that you are not so prone to pain. Any comments?

seafield1 - 2013-08-05 15:31:00
1899

My kindle doesn't have a light, I must actually see what I can see on it without the room light on lol.. If I need a light I use a clip on one I got ages ago for doing cross stitch, so didn't need to buy the e-reader with a light.

I also have a nextbook from the warehouse, which I can go online with and I can use it to get books from the library on. Cos most libraries don't support Kindles.

Ive not heard of Birchwood needles seafield. My SIL uses bamboo needles to help prevent the pain in her hands.
I don't like them cos I like rigid needles. Steel for me. I don't like needles with bend in them
