Milk Powder question ! I currently buy a 3 litre of milk for nearly 5 bucks, this lasts me about a week, maybe more. I use this for my baking and hot drinks, but sometimes I will just drink a glass of milk . I am thinking of getting milk powder as I am getting sick or running out. Does it tastes the same as bought milk for if I wanted a glass of it ? or best used for baking ?
Much appreciated :)

Edited to say On anouther note, I will be adding vinegar to my washing in plavce of buying fabric softner. Does this leave a smell or can you ass an oil ? I currently use eco store lemon laundry powder.

hi as for the vinegar for fabric softner, NO you dont have a smell it must be white vinegar and you must have washing machine on a full wash cycle it does not work on any other cycle otherwise the water does not go through the fabric softner thingy

holy Craparonni this week has been mad mad mad........the budget is out the window bla bla bla.
Palmerston nnorth is a 80 min drive for me from home and ive been there 3 times in 4 days, Saturday I had to go down to pick up parts for a truck so that could get fixed on Sunday and work again on Monday, Monday my son flew in from Eygpt after being away for 6.5 months so lovely to see him( and he came back very well thanks goodness after his hospital scare over there with his lungs), cafes cafes cafes to have a great catch ups, then yesterday back down again for my DIL graduation, she has scored a great job as managing sports co-ordinator at a sports training company down there, so I couldn't be prouder, and has coped beautifully with her new hubby of 3 weeks been away from home for over 6 months, so busy busy busy and my oldest sons band comes to town on Friday to play hits from the 60's 70's 80's and 90's for the town so hopefully that goes well, and have sponsered them all a motel ( so the 5 of them dont sleep on our floor lol) and will give them breakfast before they all go back to WGTN the next morning so although it has been extremely great all the events that have happened this week , normal life next weeks seems pretty good to me today. have you taken a breath and then got a call yesterday for catering today for 10 people and as much as I wanted to say na no way hosie, of course I said yes, so this is my only moment away form food food food, the twelve week challenge is going well , can see heaps of body changes, my scales still hate me, but who needs them.......just thought id share this morning I do feel grateful for everything iand everybody in my life this morning, but everything has been abit over whelming this week, have a great day everyone xx

I know what you mean, we are in a bit of a whirl at the moment, we have family & guests coming from overseas, my parents 50th wedding anniversary doo, school Ball and school production of which my Miss 18 is the lead.... I never know if i am coming or going with all the running around and meet ups.... Still it will end as soon as it began...and life will calm down.
Got up early yesterday and turned $4.95 RTC mince into 2 x dinner lasagnes and 3 x lunch lasagnes. Would have cost no more than $15, so thats $7.50 a meal for 4 and 3 free lunches. It also has a double saving effect as the one in the freezer means I won't get takeaways or eat out one night when we are rushed...... I haven't double batched nearly as much as I would like to lately.... life has been so busy.
Still off i go now to get a few jobs done before people rise in this house.
Have a great day

frig me it was that cold this morning that not only was no water coming out my taps at all, but when I got to the gym I had left my water bottle in the ute and it wasnt till I went to take a swig at it that I realised it was frozen solid, so to be that frozen inside the car it must of been -4 degrees i reckon, lucky im a girl guide and I have the jug full and a pot of water on the stove for washes teeth and dishes.......finally getting rid of my cluster flies today had the guys to look at insulation through the other day and he said the roof is packed so exterminator will put a bomb through this morning i did not realise how bad they were, but if your on a ladder and shine a torch through the man hole they gravitate to it, and believe me it was gross....money well spent i reckon I might be able to make up my spare bed in the spare room again cause they got through a freshly made bed between the top & bottom sheets plus got in the pillowslip between pillow and slip and cluster and breed YUK room has been empty for 2 months thank goodness, wouldnt put anyone in there so it would be nice to have it made up again, mind you i have in 2 months managed to store a shit load of crap in there as well, have a great day ladies and keep warm

I always bring home the little shampoo bottles and then empty them into our flowing soap dispenser, I was given the tip to use cheap shampoo as its cheaper than flowing soap. But now I get a litre of budget flowing soap for about $2.20, can't beat that... so long as the dispenser looks nice no one knows its budget.

Nice one! I have been using flowing soap instead of shower gel. (I do not like the scum that forms on my shower with soap.) May have to look into the use of cheap shampoo instead of THAT!

Thank you, toadfish! The longer I wait to make decisions like that, the less money I will have -- and you are right. I could just pick one or two things and it would still help out.

store cupboard item, such as pasta, rice, tin food, frozen veges maybe, that way your always ahead, cleaning products you can do without, but food you cannot, get a veg garden even a small one( an old tractor tyre) and grow silverbeet, winter cabbage etc these will all help with the budget

I hate waste - there I said it.... think thats often my main motivation for budgeting... hate wasting money when I don't need to.... hate wasting food.

On Tuesday we had what i call a "Lazy Crockpot" dinner. I just placed skinless chicken thighs in the crockpot and emptied a can of Watties Butter Chicken sauce... voila... done - I wouldn't normally buy this flavour (prefer pataks for Indian) but they have changed the cans and i thought i had picked up my favourite - the Satay one.
Got home flicked on the rice cooker, put on the frozen veg and the meal took just minutes on a cold & busy night. It was yummy.... but it made so much liquid.... we all had a good amount on our rice but lots (probably 2 cups) was left. So i popped that in the fridge. Last night, after tea I fried up an onion and a quarter of a grey pumpkin (Peeled and in small pieces) with a little garlic.... added the butter chicken juice and a little water... boiled for 30 mins...... smells delicious.... Will Blitz it properly this morning and thats lunch sorted for today, plus I use vegemite Jars as these are a perfect cup a soup size and will freeze some for next week.....

No waste and delicious.

We went away last weekend and stayed at the Kingsgate $110 including 2 cooked buffet breakfasts (Good price i thought) - I brought the shampoos home and am draining those into my soap dispenser, I also brought the small box of sorbent tissues home... once they are opened they apparently have to be thrown out.... not on my shift...lol.

ohh toady i love hotel freebees, i to take the soaps, shampoos and moisturisers plus the sewing kits......now i have a funny story we have just been away on holiday and we wanted to play a practicak joke on one of our team, we were truing to selotape money onto a pair of knickers (dont ask) it wasnt working and wallaa wo behold I pull a sewing kit out of my first aid kit, everyone pissed themselves laughinh cause they always say i have everything in my bag apart from the kitchen sink, but for airline purposes i had to take them out of my hand bag and put them in my toiletries, so problem solved, its like the shoeshine lits how oftern do you go out somewhere and you stand in something, its never when you home and have a wet wipe its always on the go, so those shoeshine kits go in the glovebox and are alwasy used...........cold mornings and nights make use of your library website, and my tip go through the whitcoulls or paperplus top 100 selling books then go to your library website and request them all, thats $25 a book pretty much that you save each time you take a good book out, more money for cupcakes lol

in love reading especially at this time of the year, I cannot stomach paying $30 for a book that will take me a couple of hours to read (fast reader), so thats what I started doing, the library also has a purchase request online so I go through the books I want to read and if they are not listed I enter the name the author and the isbn number and they buy books each month so 9 times out of 10 I get the books they didnt have purchased as well, lots of people dont even know librarys are online, its such a great service, and boy are there some good books out there at the momnent, and our library seems to have quite a few series avaliable but not in sequesnce so ive made it my mission this month, instead of buying the missing books in a series to get it finished, I have either donated the book once ive read it to complete the library set ( if ive been that desperate to read it that i did buy it)or ive requested they buy the book as they already have 1, 2 & 3 but not 4, hubby loves talking books while hes driving so I download those for him off the same library site and he can take them either on his ipod or i can put them on cd or cds as most of them are and he can play them whenever, not really a mag girl but if something interested me then of course id buy it, have a great weekend ladies.

Yup, we are hard out budgeting. DH is taking a few weeks off to build our garage, and being self employed... no work... no money, so we are living off mine..... interesting....
I have had 2 x car registrations come in this week (in the same post), so I am going to pay 1 only for 6 months so that they are more spread out next time - the funny thing is one of them i paid 6 months worth a xmas, to stop it being right on xmas, then we went and brought a car that came up at the same time lol....I have decided the better of 2 evils was to have one happen around xmas than 2 together lol. We pay $50 a month into the Pak n Save Christmas club, so do a massive shop mid December... makes a huge difference on finances and all the grocery money can go on presents and all those extra costs around xmas, including Dh taking time off and not getting paid....
Although talking of presents.... I am going to start now.... writing a list and getting bits and pieces over the next few months.

I LOVE TRADE ME!!!

I just got the most amazing solid Pine shelves, for a $20 Buy Now... the photo was much worse than they actually are and they look like they were custom made for my Lockwood. The big plan is to shelve out my Laundry, but its way down the list of things that need doing... Now I am as happy as larry.... they are PERFECT!!!!!

I am using it for all my spares when I buy specials in Bulk and all sorts of other things.... Its amazing how small things can make you feel so great. For the first time since we moved in 3.5 months ago I feel like my Laundry (just off my kitchen) is not a diasaster zone.... All for 20 bucks!!!! Hubby is a builder and couldn't buy the wood for that.....

i know what you mean Toady, I have massis of jars and agee jars in the garage and washhouse, and my DH would love me to turf them all, but since taking on my job and wanting to keep the coolest job ever I have been cutting there costs by preserving and bottling so evertually and I do mean eventually LOL they will all get used.I have had to hide the 100 emtpy babyfood jars i have been given at work I think that would be over the top a little, but sometimes you get sick of doing something, and then regret being impulsive so I am trying not to do that.

Page 3....
Yesterday the family wanted burgers so I brought a bulk pack of the best mince. Had a $14 price tag but then a $9.95 bulk sticker on it. I added 2 eggs, 2 finely chopped onions, 1 cup dried bread crumbs and my secret enhancer, 2 good dollops of chow chow and some S&P. Made 10 decent Burger Patties, 4 for last night and 6 for the freezer (seperated by gladwrap so free flow)
More tastier & healthier than the prebrought ones and probably slighly cheaper at about $1 pattie - $4 a meal. I have a cool burger press, which always makes them look great and uniform size. Like this but mine was 50c from an op shop and i seem to be missing that middle piece, not sure what its for but don't miss it at all.

Did you have nothing in your roof before? Brrrrr You must of been cold. I must look into that subsidy. We only need to do the underfloor, and with hubby being a builder, it will be interesting how the prices compare with us doing it ourselves (having got the materials at trade) and getting someone in and recieiving the subsidy.
We have a lovely warm house but feel our girls bedrooms need a bit of help as they are down a hallway and around a corner from the fire. We installed an econoheat on a timer in the hall so that has taken the chill off it (2hrs in morning and 4 hours a night) Haven't had a power bill since installation so that will be interesting . Hubby & I are toasty warm as we sleep upstairs and the combination of heat rising and the fires flue going through the space, we sleep with a summerweight duvet... and still get too hot lol.

no we had absolutely nothing in the old part of the house, and only batts in the new part of the house which is our bedroom and spare room when we renovated about 6 years ago. But to get the subsidy we had to get both floor and ceiling donw which we were happy to do, and they added an extra layer to our bedroom roof as he said it was only a thin layer and wasnt really up to recommendations, so im a happy camper there was a major frost here this morning and the house was toasty and warm

I think it pays to know how to cook... saves money all around.
I had my parents coming for lunch yesterday and couldn't decide what to do.
Went to Pak n Save for work things yesterday and they had enourmous leeks for $1.29. So I brought one.
I made Leek & Potatoes soup, used 2 rashers of bacon I had left over, onions, cheese and the end of a jar of sun dried tomatos, and 4 cups of home brand flour, baking powder, butter & milk and made amazing savoury scones.. everybody raved and I fed 5 people cheaply with left overs for later! All for what what was in the cupboards and a $1.29 leek.

I was trying to avoid was going to the supermarket and using what was in the cupboards as I still haven't been shopping since I spent over $400 to get the 50c off. (Have been to fruit and veg though and will need some bread soon.

Page 5! Can't have that.
Shopped last week, was 3 weeks since the Mega shop. Decided to do it the cheapest way i know how. I made a comprehensive list & sent Miss 19 to Pak n save, she is a great little shopper, buys only whats on the list and knows how to price compare to get the best value. We are all stocked up now... with spares of most things for $235 add that to the $12 I spent at countdown - They had 5 Watties beans or spaghetti for $6 and at the same time buy 5 watties products and get a free loaf of bread, so I brought 10 for $12 and walked away with 2 x free Natures fresh bread.... got to love that. This will last us at least a fortnight, with a couple of trips to the fruit and veg.
Scored a great deal on Grabone, they sent me a $5 voucher to encourage me, as i hadn't brought anything in a while, the very next day they had $35 worth (10kgs) of fruit for $16, so I only paid $11. There were 5 Avocados, oranges, kiwifruit, beautiful lemons, not so beautiful apples (thinking crumble)....it arrived on Friday so we are super stocked up.

My phrase this month is "No spend August" as hubby is still working on our place and not earning as such. Its a great tool. When anything comes up, I go no.... its "No spend August"..... Opened my mouth before i thought on Sunday suggesting Brekkie out with my daughter at our local cafe as everyone else was out.(we had an entertainment book 2 for 1 - but would still have cost us about $25 with coffee) Then I remembered whoops It's "No spend August" and Miss 19 made me beautiful scrambled eggs on toast, we ate it together and it was lovely to spend time just the 2 of us in our PJ's at home - for free!!

Have a great day all. JB

No spend August, still going well.
Sold a trade for $35 on Thursday, brought a bottle of my fav bubbles $8.99 for my treat, some rtc chorizo sausages for hubbys treat (He loves them), a huge bag normally $18 for only $10, 6 loaves of bread for the freezer and 2 x 2 litres of milk. The whole lot cost me $8 over my $35 - And seeing I am allowed to buy essentials (milk and bread) in "No spend August" a very cheap shop.
I did splurge at the RTC shop though, a bargain I could not pass up. Hubby can only take panadol for his back - and they had Neck, shoulder and back pain panadol that we normally buy - $1.50 for 10 - saving $10.50!!!! I brought 2 outers (24 packs) for $36, will save us a fortune in the long run - and we wont need to buy them in a very long time.... wasnt going to pass that one up "No spend August" or not!.

Just remembered I got Brocolli (2 for 99c) and a big cauli (on special $1.29) for my $8 over the $35.
Have just turned the "not so nice" apples from my $11 fruit deal, into 3 delicious apple crumbles, 1 for tonight and 2 for the freezer.
I won a sugar pack of all things about 6 months ago, every type of sugar you can imagine, so used half white and half dark muscavado in the topping (loosely based on the Alison holsts recipe - except I only had 150 gms of butter left, and a triple batch called for 225 gms).... seems to have mixed in ok. Guess the proof will be in the eating.....

Off to pop my bubbles.... thanks to a handy dandy sealer, lasts me about 4 nights... if I can keep Miss 18 & Miss 19 away from it.

I saw these in Hong Kong 3.5 years ago... and really really wanted them... they were $99 Hong Kong Dollars, and we were at the start of a 6 weeks holiday. So I left them in the shop.
They were delievered yesterday..... for free!!! Hubby wondered if I strayed and bought something lol
So today hubby is putting up some shelves for me in my "Will one day be a proper butlers pantry" Using wood that came out of our wardrobes when we put in organisers and brackets he had in the shed.....
And I am going to spend the day reorganising my kitchen.... We have been in our new home since end of March and the kitchen has never been quite right, but the extra space created in the Laundry... oops I mean "Will one day be a proper butlers pantry"... means I am slowly but surely getting organised.
