morning :) sounds lovely carol and I like how you are knitting for him as he hasn't had anything new this winter.
I'm off into town shortly as I'm getting a new windscreen in the car at 8.00am. It's been booked in for a couple of days now. Just had a huge stone chip and then with the heavy frost the other day, it cracked along the bottom. The glazier said it was Ok to go to taumaranui yesterday so I drove well back from other cars just in case. So that will be a couple of hours browsing in town while it is fixed. Thank goodness for insurance.
I'll knit this afternoon, I've had two days of no knitting and getting withdrawls!
happy knitting :)

Morning Girls.... Woohooo Kiwimade, share your news on here...

Had a very productive evening last night. Finished one skirt and halfway on the next.
Grocery shopping this morning and taking MrP to drs about his hernia and diabetes.
Im on the redecoration fix again. Have decided since the bathroom is mostly blue for the mats shower curtain etc that I could change the hucky curtain that's never used to a pretty net one. And Ill put away the shocking yellow ducks and soap jar. and get some candles. Was thinking of using some whiskey glasses we got 24 years ago, and never used, lol and putting some cut up blue cellophane I have kept for so long I don't remember where I got it from. and put a little of that in each glass and a tealight candle in. They wont get lit. and need to find something for the soap, maybe a basket with a blue flannel in.

Am going to get together with a friend and make some hanging decorations by melting beads and hang that up in the toilet. Will be yellows red and oranges.

Quite excited that Im getting everything pretty and nice now

Have a good day everyone. Kiwimade have you hit earth again yet? lol

Morning all. These school holidays are busier than I expected. Spent the day up at the computer hub filling in as the supervisor person thingy as the two that usually do it were unavailable. Then off with the kids to the cafe and pick a friend up to bring home. Off into town a bit later. Not sure if we will go line dancing today or just down to the cafe for kids karaoke.

I spent last night winding wool, and made a start on the third of 3 beanies I am meant to have already done and off to Oz. I just seem to be on a total go slow. So much for holiday sleep ins and catching up. I printed off those elephant patterns from those links yesterday and want to make a start on the Babar one, but want to finish this stuff first. And I also printed off a free pattern off that Jean Greenhowe site link too. Cute little rainbow babies? Now I need to invest in some acrylic to make these things. Is deramores still the best for acrylic? or is there somewhere in NZ cheaper?

I've just about hit the earth popeye... I'll brag here too lol (everyone will be getting sick of me!). Our daughter had another scan and this time baby co-operated and they could see they are having a wee girl :) :) So we are having a granddaughter!! Maddelyn Mary Annette :) :) We are just soooo stoked. MrK is just beaming! Went out and bought a pink cardy from the warehouse today, they have a really good sale on at the moment.
Linedancings fun dwebble - I just can't get the co-ordination right and am always a couple of steps behind everyone lol.
How do you melt the beads popeye? And what do you turn them into? There are some really clever ideas out there!
Happy knitting :)

Dweeble Deramores is cheaper than and have far better quality acrylic. James c Brett are the best. The Stylecraft life (live) is good too. The only one I didn't like was the robyn I think its called.

Im soo pleased for you Kiwimade.. Girls are much more fun to make things for.

The bead thing was a picture my friend put on my facebook. You put the plastic beads in a cake tin and melt slowly in the oven. Im not sure your you make the hole in to hang from a string, but she has made them before so will know how.
Ill see if I can find the photo, cos they were pretty.

http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/full/275858492.jpg

I want one for toilet and bathroom. Ohh I got blue candles for the bathroom this morning and a blue drainer cutlery tray to stand MrPs guff, tooth brush , comb etc in on the vanity. I have a blue Itty Bitty bin in the office I will put the soaps in.. And got a net curtain which I will make into two curtains for the bathroom. Grand sum spent $5-10 for candles and drainer, and $10 for a huge curtain.

Almost there with the lace, about 30 repeats to do and it's done so will get the shawl finished this weekend all going well.
Housework today first though.

Morning all.

Me either Kiwimade, But I really like the idea.. Will get together with a friend and get some made. she has some beads but Ill have to check them out. I know the colours I want and wont settle for something else.

2 Days and I have finished knitting the Topsy Turvey..

Have washing to fold and I want to sew the net curtain for the bathroom.

Then will put the doll together after lunch... I think I feel the need to make another, but then I could make a start on MrPs cardy.

Have an awesome day everyone..

Kiwimade, that line dancing is a serious cardio workout lol. I come away more sore and tired than I do when my personal trainer takes me through my paces in the gym. We had ladies in their 70's who do line dancing and are way more fitter than me lol

Edited to add congrats on having a granddaughter on the way kiwimade. And I might add Annette is a lovely middle name. It is my oldest daughter's middle name and my sister's first name.

Thanks for that info popeye. I will try and get on the website and have a look. Some days dialup likes me, others not. Otherwise I will do it when I am at the hub on Tuesday. The only downside of living here is no access directly to any craft or wool shops to go look at. Gotta do everything online and then we only have certain days for flights so mail can be quite slow in arriving.

awww thanks dwebble, Annette is my name so I am thrilled they put my name in there. I cried when they told me her name lol as I was not expecting it at all.
wow you ladies are so quick at knitting! Takes me forever to get things finished. Hopefully will get the shawl finished this weekend so that's something.
Popeye, I would imagine you would need to use old baking tins you are prepared to ruin if it all goes to custard! Am looking forward to seeing the end results.
happy knitting.

WARNING the fumes from melting the plastic beads are very toxic.. I read that down further somewhere on that site.. they suggest maybe using a barbecue outdoors..

Morning all
Those bead things look lovely Popeye - I guess they would need a bit of care in making as could be a bit messy and hadn't thought about the fumes grannypam - good warning there.
Lovely Kiwimade that you now know what the baby is there are so many lovely patterns for little girls.
Had an early morning courier delivery today - had an email yesterday from Griffins as I had entered a competition they are running saying that there was a courier delivery coming. No indication what it might be so my imagination worked overnight trying to imagine what they could be sending that needed a tracked courier delivery. When the parcel arrived saw it was not big enough or the wrong shape to be the 42" tv, an ipad or any of the other big prizes - turned out to be a mug with a gingernut one it - gave us a good laugh tho'.
Another lovely day - washing all out nice and early so will be dry today, one of the drawbacks of winter is partially dry washing.
Trying to get a little jersey finished for a grand-nephew to take to wellington this weekend so better keep going with as I am trying to adjust a pattern so has a placket in the front as He does not like things under his chin so they can leave the front open if it annoys him.

Well I have wasted this morning on a website printing out some awesome patterns. I am ashamed I allowed myself to be distracted, but it means I have another clearfile full of knitting and crochet patterns to try my hand at lol

dwebble - 2013-07-19 11:56:00
1716

Yes I thought about the fumes too..I just checked, they cook them at 400 for 20 mins, that's very hot. It doesn't take heat that high to soften old record so will be experimenting.
I also thought I might buy a couple of old tins from the oppie. I dont want to ruin ones I have.

My bathroom looks soo much better. MrP even hugged and kissed me and said he didn't realise he married a designer lol... Im also stoked that its not costing much to do all my prettifying lol... Im using more stuff that I have than having to buy.
Had a productive morning, cleaned litter box, cut , sewed and hung curtain, folded washing, re-attatched the carpet to the table leg for my boy to use as a scratch post. And Sewed up the body part of the Doll... I love the hats, could see them all over a blanket or cushion. will take a photo later.
Time for a quick play on here and then back to the sewing.

Afternoon ladies. (Was gonna say morning but it isn't anymore and i've only just gotten up). I have a very bad headache and i've only just managed to get out of bed and have a shower. MrWhiskey is home today as his mum has just returned home from being in and out of hospital. 3rd time in 4 weeks so he decided to have the day of and be close at hand for her. She only lives round the corner. I've been on a go slow all week and haven't touched any knitting for a few days. I only need to pick up and knit the left front band on a wee pink jersey and sew up the sleeves then I'm done. It's gonna be hard matching buttons for this one but I'm sure I'll find something to match. I'm into smiley face buttons at the moment, i think they look cool on baby jerseys. Then it's onto the next one.

Hi Whiskey, not good to hear about the headache. some can really knock you flat eh.
Maybe concentrating on the knitting might not be a good idea.
The sun is streaming in here now, The furry one has decided its warm enough to sleep on the chair uncovered lol.

Im trying to track down beads... Im thinking I will need a good amount, but it looks like Ill have to go window shopping on the feet not the websites.
Still to look at spotlight but they have a stupid website that doesn't show much more than the catalogue pages.

Take care of that headache Jo

Morning all...
Overcast here but not raining at present. Not cold tho which is nice.

I need a less comfortable bed, I slept in one position for 5 hours and was creaky as heck when I got up lol.

I have finished the Topsy turvey, but am far from satisfied on the hair. So will dr it today to make it look better. Otherwise was fun to make.

I don't have any orders at the mo so I will start MrPs cardy. Then knit a toy between each section lol. The blanket has been neglected for the last week or so, but I will be back to that tonight. The brown will be on the .
dark side for night knitting.

Have a good day all, make the most of not being able to get outside.. gotta love the winter for that reason alone lol

popeye333 - 2013-07-20 08:27:00
1723

Morning all. Sun is shining here today, but I am shattered! I had my miss 11 jump in bed with me last night and she is getting a head cold so snored her head off and kept me awake for ages. Then this morning my CPAP was making a weird high pitch noise which worried me so I turned that off and got up. I just want to go back to bed lol.

So I have been making a beanie for a friend in Chch this morning to fill in my time, but I am struggling to concentrate, so think I may have to just give it a break for a while.

Enjoy your day ladies :-)

It's ovecast but not really cold here today. Not sure that I have any plans yet on how I will spend the day but it will involve going to check the po box and his nibbs will get his lotto ticket. I wish I could knit in bed, but I just don't feel comfortable trying to knit with my legs straight out in front of me, I have to be sitting with my knees bent.

not sure what to do next so have thrown several patterns and different wools into the bag to take, one of the joys of traveling by car I don't need to travel light.

I generally sit with my legs bent. But can knit with my legs our straight. Heaps of pillows to prop me up. I sit up to read too, have never liked laying down and reading.

When I was younger we travelled a fair bit around the north island. I never saw a lot of it , cos I was always knitting or crocheting in the car.

Ive been playing in the toilet and bathroom again. Got a few things when we went up the road, like blue scrunchies, and a spray bottle for bathroom. Also got some cheap curtain tie backs with big tassle bits and have hung one from each corner of the window. Looks cool. And I never really like artificial flower but got a red, orange and yellow strand and have tied them at varying heights and hung that on one side of the toilet window. And put a little dish of marbles in matching colours too.
And the ideas all started from something that was aready in the room.

Will have a quick squizzy on here then will thicken up the hair on the dolls for Whiskey and they will be done

Have a productive day everyone

Well done for nearly getting the projects done.. Kiwimade you will be stoked to have that shawl out of the way... whats next? Frilly lacy things? lol
Ive just about done the ribbing on the back of MrPs cardy... Ill do that through the day, being soo dark and my blanket at night time again.
My back is in a niggly mood. I have a lovely comfy bed but I end up sleeping in one spot too long and then ache...

I really feel like baking today, just one slice that I used to make a lot.. the only problem being is then we would have to eat it lol... I miss baking, and cos we are both diabetic its better that I don't.

Have a good day, hope everyones Wellingtonians are safe and well.

Good morning all, I have a query which I am hoping that someone can pleeease help me out with...I have been asked to knit up a shawl from a US pattern purchased from (I think) Ravelry. The needle size is (circular) US8 / 5mm with a stated tension of 15sts and 34 rows after blocking. There is a lacy border of 20 rows, the rest is all garter stitch. The wool itslf is a mix of 60% Merino, 20% Alpaca and 20% Silk. Owner is happy to purchase the wool in the US via family members but we can't work out the ply that it would be...would it be a double knit knitted on larger-than-usual needles to give a more open effect or would it be a triple knit? The needle size doesn't quite match up either as I've always thought that (imperial) size 8 = metric size 4. Unless the pattern means imperial 0 which = metric 8??
Sorry for the long description above, even figuring out the correct needle size would be of help lol.

Sorry, I have tried but haven't a clue about doing that, grrr - the title of the pattern is 'Quaking Aspen Shawl' and comes up on google when title is put in to search..

Okaaay, have just fiddled around on that site and found that the wool is DK so what would the needles size equate to? A size 0 imperial to obtain the open look? there are x5 50gr balls total, used. Thanks carolev for your quick reply, this is not something which I would usually knit but keen to give it a go :)

US size 8 needles are our 5mm (old size 6), so the pattern is correct. Using the 5mm needles will give the shawl a lacier look. Shawls are often knitted on a bigger sized needle than would be normal for the yarn weight.
edited to add - the yarn stipulated in the pattern is a double knit. Hope this helps.

I have knitted few circular baby shawls . The pattern I use is an old Beehive one and is done on 5.5mm needles and 2ply wool. My pattern doesnt give any tension info. it measures 50 inches across. Not sure if thats any help to you.

kiwicarol - 2013-07-21 11:53:00
1742

Thank you both for these replies, I have it all figured out now so just need to get the wool and make a start on my first-ever shawl (gulp)! From reading the pattern, it seems as though the lacy pattern is actually done last, with the knitting actually starting at the top of the shawl, having the garterstitch body done first then the stripes and lastly the lace piece. The pattern is set out differently than those I am used to which will make it a little trickier with the lace piece at the end so will just persevere - just wondering if anyone here has actually knitted this one?? I will also do a tension test strip first 'just in case' lol.

The shawl I am knitting (and nearly finished!) is 2ply on 4mm needles. Gives a nice openess to the lacey part. But it feels like I am knitting with tree trunks!
edited to add, it's circular too and done on two needles. Hang in there, it can be done lol (this is my first shawl too).

Glad you got the shawl sorted Justme. Not something Ive ever done. Laciest thing Ive ever made was a feather and Fan jumper, many many years ago, oh and a singlet top and cardy. I loved that twinset pattern but have lost it somewhere along the way.

Havent had time to knit this morning. Finally put the washing away and then sorted in the shed for a box of stuff to list, stuff I used to take to the markets here.
So best get that done than I can knit

Thanks kiwimade and popeye, the actual knitting doesn't sound toooo bad but with 250+ stitches on the circular needle (only used one of these once before and on a baby garment) and the pattern written in a very different manner than usual, it will be intensive! I have done plenty of lace patterns before but in baby-garment sizes and am doing one of these at present. Oh well, could be interesting at the very least, nothing like a challenge to multiply the grey hairs lol. Hopefully someone else may read this who has already knitted the same shawl!

Morning Everyone.... I hope those with family and friends in Wellington have made contact and that everyone is ok.

Kiwimade, put your pics on here too for those who don't do facebook. The shawl is absolutely beautiful. You are a very clever woman. You can see its made with love. And Im sure your granddaughter will look snug as a bug in a rug in that.

I never get sick, but 3 visits to the med centre in the last couple of weeks, has left us both coughing our heads off. I hope its not one of those 90 day coughs. We both had a rough night, so at least one cant complain to the other.
Will be staying inside knitting and that's about all.

Thanks popeye for your kind comments. I never knitted a shawl for our own kids (probably as I was working right up to the 'end') so knitting one for our granddaughter feels great.

I've started knitting a little onsie for granddaughter but it's cream lol. Bought the yarn before we knew what sex she was! But I haven't bought the buttons so they can be girly pink :). I've also started crocheting a pair of lacy booties but I need daylight to see what I'm crocheting so had to give up last evening. Looks like a daytime project!
Our son is fine, a little shaken but fine. I don't think he will have uni today as they will no doubt be checking all the buildings.

Your shawl looks absolutely beautiful kiwimade, you will be justifiably very proud of yourself.
