THE NEW COIN CLUB

#Post
1651

Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

No, can't add anything, really. It looks silver but that's no guarantee. Would be good to know if the mark under the left-hand koala is designer's initials or an indicator of fineness. There's also something under the centre point of the boomerang which could be the same sort of thing. Wondering if it could be by one of the "big" names like Stuart Devlin or Andor Meszaros.

thankyou martin..its the first time i have seen one of though coins, i have ask him two questions,i will see what happens, cheers peter

Excellent general knowledge!! It was the kingdom of Zamunda in the movie Coming to America with Eddie Murphy http://www.chiefacoins.com/Database/Movies/Zamunda.htm

Your turn

Not really, I saw the film last year but had to check up the denomination!

My question -

On coins who had their apotheosis marked by a star and in who's name were the coins struck? Bonus for naming the type of coins!

Augustus, on an aureus of Tiberius (AD 14). Interestingly there's a silver denarius with the same design illustrated at Wildwinds.com.

Now the enlargements are up, I seem to make out "HAFNER" under the koala. Perhaps it's Emil Hafner, who seems to have produced a number of medals/medallions in Australia, though I can't locate this one on a quick google search.

I had in mind a denarius of Augustus with the star of Julius on but you are also correct.

So your turn to ask the next question.

Funny, I thought I'd heard of one with Caesar but couldn't find any refs. The Augustus/Tiberius one was what I turned up when looking for the Caesar example!

On to a question: Whose bust on his coinage carried the designer's initials O.S., which were a source of some amusement at the time?

OS is apparently Afrikaans for 'ox' which caused some humour when it was stamped on Paul Kruger's bust. According to the story nearly causing him to lose an election. I'm sure that last bit wasn't true though.

Edit - sorry used 'apparently' 3 times in 2 sentences - remedied.

Nice. I know I'm out of turn but I can't resist asking: if you add up the mintage of the octagonal and round versions of the 1915 $50, the total is the same as the total mintage of which other well known coin?

Just checked them now - funny. I see the "only one in NZ" description disappeared at some stage.

Oddly enough the first coin I checked was the Waitangi crown and it was the same - both at 1128. If you were to get me one for my birthday I guess I'd be hoping for the $50 though (but either would be nice).

Are you talking about mintage or what was actually sold. Looks like there is a big difference for these coins. Actually minted was 1509 octagonal and 1510 round according to one website. However 645 of the octagonal and 483 of the rounds were sold. What well known coin has a mintage of 3019? Beats me!! But 1128 is the mintage of the Waitangi Crown.

You live and learn :-) I've never seen the higher figures in 40 years of reading coin books, though I now see that the Red Book rather naughtily says "Distribution" rather than "Mintage" for the commemorative issues, not just the Panama-Pacific $50s. It's very likely that more were made and the unsold balance melted.

I did wonder too but......
Anyway, straight forward but possibly controversial question again - What appears to be the first numismatic item to have reached reserve on the new auction site?

3

1943 Break from P in Emperor to back of head.
1946 Flat back Kiwi
1946 Crack between E and Kings face.

If we're just looking at dates, then the only ones in Roy Lester's book are:
1941 narrow and wide dates
1943 normal and "less angled" 3

translateltd - 2013-04-16 08:45:00
1699

1936 low 6 - high 6
1941 narrow and wide dates
1942 4 close to 9
1943 4 farther from 9
1945 4 farther from 9
total numbers are 5 in the florins but i have found two more errors in 1942
next question is yours martin
