THE NEW COIN CLUB

#Post
1601

Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

ETA - long time no see (interwebs wise) - welcome back Lester.

Yes Chris I'm still here Been here watching But saying nothing.
Dora Doscher was 22 years old when she modelled for Hermon MacNeil for his redesign of the Quarter. She was also the model for Karl Bitter's "Diana" in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Is that the full and correct answer.

I got "Doris" Doscher from Wikipedia - maybe that was the reason for the "not quite". Bit mean not to give you it if so, though :-)

The Straits Settlements one has unfortunaly had at some time a Brooch mount removed.
The Burma one is only fine but still a nice addition.
Any opinions on these welcome.

That's me - mean to the bone! Now if I had been asking who is from South America, has a pet monkey called Boots and is known for exploring well Dora would have been fine!

ETA - looks like the next question goes to Martin.

Don - if you want something a bit less controversial to send out with sales, I'd be happy to post you a bunch of bookmarks plugging the RNSNZ :-) Ditto anyone else who might want to help with some free advertising ...

On the dangers of freebies, back in the 1990s - in one of the election years - one of the unions produced quite a good quality "$31" note that looked like a twenty but with Jim Bolger on the back. Bill Lampard thought it was a nifty-looking item and said we should get a supply to send one to each RNSNZ member as a freebie with the next mailout. Unfortunately we overlooked the anti-National political message and annoyed a few people in the process!

OK, a new quiz question: Which Eurozone country issues a circulating coin with the word FRANCE on it? (France's own coins just say "RF".)

translateltd - 2013-04-06 08:48:00
1612

When you say issues you mean current currency? And it has to be 'FRANCE' so 'Franc' on some British coins issued whilst their crown had claims to the French crown don't count?

chrisr5 - 2013-04-06 10:54:00
1613

Current issue, currently circulating (not a coin-like-object or NCLT), the full word FRANCE and a user of the Euro.

translateltd - 2013-04-06 11:13:00
1614

I'm guessing there was no 'Deutschland uber France' commemorative coin issued in 2010.

chrisr5 - 2013-04-06 11:35:00
1615

If there had, it would have been Frankreich in any case :-) Regular circulating issue, not a commem.

From memory (Yeah, right!), that would be the 2-euro coin with France Prešeren who wrote the Slovenian national anthem. The coin features the first line:

Žive naj vsi narodi

You allknow the tune, now everyone join in!!!

ki hrepene dočakat' dan,
da koder sonce hodi,
prepir iz sveta bo pregnan,
da rojak
prost bo vsak,
ne vrag, le sosed bo mejak!

True story: I was recently working with a bloke from Slovenia. Pretty unbelievable, eh? But really, very interesting bloke from a very interesting little country. Apparently lots of lovely forest, rivers and karst topography.

Ok, next question:

What country is famous for issuing the largest copper coins?

Is it the cartwheel 2 pence from old GB?

P.S. Just because I didn't quote all your post doesn't mean I wasn't LOLing.

chrisr5 - 2013-04-06 14:05:00

Russia's copper 10-kopeks of the 1840s were larger than the cartwheel, but I think we can go considerably bigger than that still ...

I had a google and I guess the bigger still you're referring to is Russia's Sestroretsk Ruble from 1771, made of copper and weighing 1030 grams? Would it be unusable in banks that refuse to deal in fiddling small change?

chrisr5 - 2013-04-06 14:43:00

I can still go bigger, but I'm holding back :-)

That's a definite maybe. If you provide close-ups of both sides of the coins sorted into groups by country, I can give you some ideas of rarity on the US stuff and anything that's from France. There are details like date, condition and mint marks that I need to be able to see (or see that they're not there). You could use those photos when you list as well.

The US coins are mostly copper or copper/nickel, which suggests a lower value, however that is not always the case. Are any dates visible? I cannot see any in the photos, but that does not mean they are not marginally visible. You might find that with additional zooming using the manual Macro setting (or even Digital Macro) you can actually see the dates. What year is the ten cent piece? The date is definitely visible, but not legible in the photo. In any case, there's about an ounce and a half of silver in the US coins, so there's the simple market value for them if nothing else.

While the overall condition of the US coins is not great from what I can see, the "right" coins even in poor condition can be worth a bob or two.

For example, your 1940 NZ Half Crown has some potential beyond its silver content: http://esoap.co.nz/2010/08/1940-nz-centennial-silver-halfcro
wn/

Also, the ZAR (Zuid Afrika Republic) six pence is an interesting one. Both of these two have silver content, but their numismatic value is probably greater than their silver content.

If you are not uploading these directly via TM, try that and see if the quality of the photos improves.

No, can't add anything, really. It looks silver but that's no guarantee. Would be good to know if the mark under the left-hand koala is designer's initials or an indicator of fineness. There's also something under the centre point of the boomerang which could be the same sort of thing. Wondering if it could be by one of the "big" names like Stuart Devlin or Andor Meszaros.
