Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again

Hi Martin, my sympathies also. You could consider petitioning trademe to remove the offending feedback. They will know that your bank details automatically go out with completed auctions.

I was left wondering if there were any silver coins in the lot you sold him!

That definitely sucks, Martin. It's certainly worth appealing to TM on the grounds that payment instructions are sent automatically, so if that's the buyer's only "issue" with you, they have no grounds whatsoever for leaving negative FB. I used FB appeal system last year and got an overtly retaliatory negative removed.

It's complicated, as these things usually are. There appear to be issues on both sides with e-mails not going out or being delivered as expected, but at the end of the day the information needed was sent immediately it was requested, so I have difficulty working out why I'm bad or incompetent, or why an immediate response should have triggered such vehemence.

I don't think it's that complicated Martin. Your other 2000+ positive trades speak for themselves. Admittedly I have the benefit of having traded with you in the past and having met you on a couple of occasions know what an exceptionally helpful, tolerant and knowledgeable person you are.

Interesting, I was wondering how thick 'thick' actually is! As I have said before we need a spraying coffee emoticon.

Also an interesting outcome for u-boot badge auction. I wasn't in the least bit surprised!

Not a regular coin person, but what sort of values for gold half-sovereigns,about 1900.Are any years particularly rare?

They go for a bit over the scrap metal currently about $220 - so usually $220-260 depending on the day and condition of the coin.

Australian 1/2 sovereigns from around the 1900 mark are quite a bit more valuable.

I like how Abe has the gall to ask for his usual low Buy Now, then fails to bid at all, even though two lovely Buffs went well below book. Well done, Abe, you da man.

Some discussion here about cleaning coins.I know it's a NONO but hear me out.I do sell the odd coin here and sometimes overseas.I do as all the books / forums say , which is DON'T CLEAN.Something however caught my eye today.I have a mate who uses an ultra sonic cleaner for his re-loading ammunition and I couldn't believe the result of getting the dirt off the cases.
I then went and got a florin / penny / crowns in cupro nickel and silver.
the difference in 10 minutes of sitting in an ultra sonic cleaner was quite amazing. No sign of rubbing etc but all the dirt had been removed and while the silver coins looked shiny they still had their lovely lustre.Have any of the collectors here had experience using untra sonic cleaners for coins? Do you approve of them as a method of cleaning coins?.FYI the pennies didn't do as well

I gather ultrasonic cleaners are pretty widely used and are accepted within numismatics, assuming the one used is built for purpose. Check around on the web for the model name and its intended uses. A good comparison might be the difference between cleaning a car with the right soap and a chamois as opposed to using 100 grit on a belt sander. Both will take the dirt off.

A lot of the wider debate hinges on whether one is collecting for one's own pleasure or gathering with intent to sell. If one plans to take a collection to ground, then cleaning them with an angle grinder is fine. If the intent is to invest or eventually sell on, then cleaning needs to be done with a lot of forethought.

We used to dip coppers in lemon juice or vinegar to make the coins shiny. This was more in the vein of a chemistry experiment, but a lot of people think they can "clean" a coin this way. They can, but not to the pleasure of most collectors.

What a **expletive deleted** conman that **expletive deleted** Abe is! I swear President Lincoln would be spinning in his grave! At least he has removed the 'honoust Abe'(sic) references from his profile!

(Please, please, please TMMB we desperately need that coffee spraying emoticon for times like this)

You should have kept bidding Chris, we were all letting you have free rein, and you let the "horse" bolt over you. (Too many animals on this thread sorry))

Thanks chefman1. Now NZPost of $4.50 for a single coin becomes signed for courier.for the same price. (after the fact) . I trust the seller will use appropriate shipping costs in future and not try to profit from them.

**dawning realisation** ROFL! I just saw your comment on that auction and who I was bidding against!

I'm so slow on the uptake sometimes it's embarrassing.

A couple of lovelies, even. That 1914-D deserved higher bids, but it outpaced my budget. Besides, it's one of the only rarer Buffs I don't seem to have trouble getting my hands on, even in comparable condition. Still, the seller seemed pleasantly surprised. Shows the importance of good photos of better coins.

I find it hard to believe that anyone could consider an American 1942 S Quarter Dollar rare when 19 million were struck and they are well represented in NZ.
