They don't communicate with each other totally pointless, lines companies know where power is going and to what area so why would they need a smart meter to tell them something which they know in real time

Some use a mesh network to send data back via other smart meters in the area. These are only used when wifi or mobile data is not reliably available. Each individual meter does not look at other meter's data, it just acts like a relay.

This is 100% correct.

I think Terminator3 I was probably thinking.. The whole place was a mess.. Fires everywhere,,, old car bodies,, in good nick still.

The next version we'll all be under EMF and doing what we're beamed to do..by power meters'

Those websites are pseudoscience crap.

No they do not.

They cannot "communicate" with each other, they can only communicate with the back office. In a mesh network they deal with packets which are addressed to them or attempt to forward route (pass along) packets which are not.

Mesh is preferred where it's already installed (Christchurch and around Waipukarau) . No meter uses wifi (as far as I've heard). Most smart meters use a cell modem but where that's not possible, satellite comms is used. The last resort is to use a meter reader to get the halfhourly data from the meter directly.

And yeah, we get spied on alright.

I did one online purchase the other week, and have cleared my cache and whatnot on my computer since, and I'm still getting adds for the company I bought off, and for products similar to what I bought, and I'm getting the adds pop up in here, and on yanky forums...

Cheeky buggers.

Clearing cache etc. on your end will not really help. This what this page sends back to google when you look at it...

The so called random data is unique to you and is used by google to track your browsing. If you let it, but they don't ask you first.

Yeah, I don't mind being advertised to based on previous searching, but it can seem very creepy when you look at something on your mobile and then Facebook starts serving up adverts on my laptop...

What I'd really like is a button that says "OK, I bought a car, stop advertising cars and change to something else you can tempt me, like whisky."

Ha yeah.. That would make more sense.. I'm not buying another multimeter for a decade at least now.

Ha ha, then never, never ever search for electronics on banggood.com...I went on looking at PC parts and valve amplifiers...now every page is a tempting ad for some crazy cheap looking thing that I cannot see any need for.

Hmm, apart from that RGB illuminated SSD heat sink for just $17....

Having trouble with Meridian. They're telling me my smart meter isn't working correctly so want me to ring the reading in. Trouble is, I can't read it either and since December it has stopped completely which they know about. I have asked for a technician to come out and fix (at no cost to me) but that seems to be too hard for them. Don't see the point of a smart meter ( if they suggest someone comes and reads it every 2 months). Can also not see how they can do that if it's a blank screen. So the latest bill, I get the same message, that they can't read it and to ring the reading in, even though I've had numerous conversations with them about this. Always a different person I talk to as well. Anyway, I sent a message back telling them I've been through this with them and that I want someone to come and fix it. Get a message back saying someone did come and even tried replacing the meter and noticed it had an aerial. Funny thing is, they're talking bs because I have been here all holidays and the meter box is inside so no there's no way they have entered the house. Also, it was me that told them it had an aerial. Sent back an email saying this and haven't heard from them for 6 days now. I also said I don't want estimations every time in case I end up with a huge bill if they get it wrong. So, thinking of switching companies. Any ideas of a good reasonable power company?

If there's an issue with the meter, just changing suppliers might not help, and in fact might be impossible if there are no automatic readings (or manual ones for that matter). Also I think in some areas the meters are owned by lines companies, not the retailer.

There is an independent complaints process that I would suggest trying:

https://www.utilitiesdisputes.co.nz/UD/Disputes/Energy_-_ele
ctricity_and_gas/UD/Disputes/Energy_-_electricity_and_gas.as
px

having an official complaint from the Watchdog might spur them on...good luck

Correct - it's rare for the retailer to have anything to do with the meter.

It's usually the lines company or a seperate metering company who own, maintain, install them and supply reads as a service to the retailers. Changing retailers usually won't help.
