#95 - I have been buying recent NZ MNH sets, years and M/S's, mostly paying face value or just above FV from both dealers and on TM, and up to 1/4 CV. Personally, as a buyer, the absolute max I would pay for MNH is 1/2 catalogue value, and it would have to be something on the rare side, or something I really want. FDC's though, I know nothing about, perhaps they might be different. (I don't collect them.) It would pay to check out what is still available at FV too from NZ Post. Howver, I do see people bidding much higher compared to CV, so you never know.

metcalfj....re checking out those stock books.. Thanks for the offer. If you are passing one day, yes please, if you could check them out. I could well be interested still. Cheers. :-)

102.......I also have most mint stamps from 1985-2005, and quite a few mini sheets that I will be getting rid of (I just bought a bulk lot, and am sorting out the ones that I want). So if you have any special requests, let me know, if I have them, I will list them for face....

I was in today, most of his stock books are the ratty old ones with collections still in them. But he did have one which was pretty much brand new (the same as the ones that he stocks brand new, can't remember the brand sorry). Anyway, new they were $28 (16 d/s pages), but this one was $22. Not sure if that is of interest by the time postage is added??

Cheers metcalfj... have to run here, dinner is ready, but.... check my feedback and look at prices I have paid for MS's...might give you a good idea of what can be found on TM.. often MS's are above FV... :-)

ok ..re my last feedback.. what did I do wrong? I kinda know what foxing etc.. is and rust etc.. but is this fair feedback, the stamps were on the paper and looked pretty clean to me, and I did put "new to stamps". now I am worried about listing anymore incase I get more like that..what else could I have done please.

I guess it might pay to spend some time at a stamp club etc to learn how to identify the very subtle things that stamp collectors look out for (I currently wouldn't try to sell that sort of item, as I don't have the knowledge). The same goes for most hobbies I guess.....

107 muddler Error stamps can have very subtle colour changes that will be viewed differently by different eyes.
Ripped perfs are not a collectors delight nor is rust.
I can not see rust in the photo and they could fix that anyway.
Rather harsh feedback, which maybe you could discuss to resolve, by email, especially if you sold a stamp with a pulled perf.
What did you do wrong ? Nothing THAT bad, just mis described the condition a tad.

108 metcalfj You could always list stamps "As per Photos" and show both sides on a black background.
I look for nice centering, nice colour,no tone(age browning),no rust spots(mildew),no missing perfs,no rounded corners,no repairs,no fiscal cancels(unless on duties stamps) or thick parcel cancels ,and no thin area on the back where a hinge has been yanked off leaving a hollow.Basically I just just look out for a nice example really.

Roulette Auction # 130486873 An experimental Perforation(a series of cuts rather than rounded Perfs). Some of the TB Cinderellas used them.It was not very successful and are quite rare. They come in Roulette # 7,16,14,"Y","H&-
quot;, etc.Have a look at the scan of the stamp and you will see them.Top and left hand side. Regards Paul.

Colour variation I have a 1988 10c Dotterel stamp that is pink rather than the normal apricot colour. Can anyone tell me if this is a recognised variation and what it's value would be? It has white edges so it is not due to any colour run from backing paper. Is there a good way to find out about colour variations? Thanks.

stak - 2007-12-12 18:20:00
116

Dotterel Stamp Quite often stamps fade due to being exposed to the sun and fool a lot of collectors. The best way to find out is to get another stamp and expose it to the sun for a period of time and see if the color changes.I believe these are called "changlings "Perhaps Donaldo would have more to say on this subject as some of these color separations are intentional and fraudulent. Not saying that yours is.Regards Paul.

rebel58 - 2007-12-12 18:55:00

115 Dotterel Variations This definite stamp had couple of variations due to print dates.
1988....Buff Background(coarse Paper)
1992....Buff background(Fine Paper )
1992....Pinkish-Buff Background(Fine Paper )

My guess is that you perhaps have one of the variations...All variations have same CV.(commercial value)mint or used. OR as rebel says it could also be sun fade.

Thanks for info Thanks so much guys for that information on the 1988 Dotterel. I have also come across another couple of variations in the 1986 Police & the 1995 Farm Animals, sheep. I will try leaving some normal ones in the sun and see what happens. Don't worry, I won't be trying to sell any 'changelings' :)

stak - 2007-12-12 21:14:00

119 stak There is no listed variations for 1986 Police strip of 5 other than a major colour shift in the upper half.
There is no listed variations in the 1995 Farm animal strip either.
Other than it was first issued 1/9/95 as 45c then re issued 2/10/95 as 40c due to the drop in postage.
The sky colour in the top and bottom rows of the Farm strip is supposed to be different.Bottom is darker blue.
What did you think was odd about your stamps....a new error unknown is always possible.

121

120 more on variations Thanks for that info. The police stamp I have is the transport one and the top is green rather than the usual brown, so it sounds like the variation you describe. The 1995 Farm is more blue than the usual green. It may have missed a colour in the printing or simply be a 'changeling'.

stak - 2007-12-12 22:25:00
122

121 stak Further to the chat.
COLOUR SHIFT..Is a Misprint from colour being wrongly aligned (either too high, too low,off to the left or off to the right of centre.
COLOUR MISSING...Is when a colour has been omitted during printing causing a different shade (or missing bit)
NOT to be confused with....Sun Bleached,Over washed, or stamps soaked off envelopes that were blue, red or green. If soaking off those strongly coloured envelopes you need to add salt to the water to prevent colour leaching into the stamps.I vaguely remember something about those police stamps, but can't find the article.Maybe someone else remembers if a colour error was found.....

*waves to metcalf and rebel* no free coins in here guys.
Looking at Len Jury catalogue, the 2004 5c Blob is not listed as a CAL. (other than a CALamity)
It seems to have all the criteria to be one though....comments.....

#137 - 5c Blob. Is it a PAL? a CAL? or a PPL? When is a CAL not a CAL?. If a CAL is to be a Customised Advertising Label, then I would tend to think it isn't technically a CAL. I noticed the other day on the NZ Post site they talk about Personalised Postage Labels (PPL?). Then say they originally were "Personal Advertising Labels" (PAL's) and now are CAL's. I wonder if NZ Post will ever issue its own CAL's? "Post Early For Christmas" kind of thing, or perhaps Stamps & Collectables could do one.

Thanks donaldo Yes, I remember now, that 5c Blob was sold over the counter at the Post Office so I will class it as a stamp rather than a cal.

Looking at 2008. I see that the Tarapex ( Taranaki Philatelic Exhibition ) is 7th-9th November.

Does anyone know if the 2008 Hamilton Ambury Shield Exhibition is also in November ?

Fakes and Forgeries Hi Donald, I have been out of the country for a bit and just recently returned. What happened to the Forgeries thread that was running here? I guess it dropped off the board never to be seen again.

I notice llew46 #15 if you are around is interested in Penny Universals :)

They are probably my No1 passion in Stamp collecting Life. Have a look at my dedicated website and I am sure you will soon realise that the number of varieties is almost endless for this little beauty :)

Higher values on cover Higher values on cover are sometimes good to take a punt on. It is amazing how hard $2, $3, $4 items VFU are to find. In saying that they still take "time" to return a reasonable price. You are right Donald, NZ Post have really screwed stamp collecting in NZ by minting a new set everytime someone sneezes. That is why I, and many others, collect pre 1940ish. (pre 1900 for me). Cheers

146 Hi roly I'm not that bothered with the modern covers either.I prefer the pre 1945 ones, especially the Health.
Mind you some can be a bit unattainable, like Red and Blue Boys on cover or Express delivery etc.
I guess you have plenty of penny universals on cover, but the universal Dickie machine label on cover would be harder to come by.

Dickie on Cover Hi Willy
I would probably kill for a dickie on cover genuinely used and definately contemplate giving my first born :) I have seen a few 'attempts' a dickies but when forged they stand out like the proverbials. MUH strips come up from time to time but the wallet has to stretch to the high 500's for a strip of three now days.
