Instead of buying fancy cleaning sprays save your spray bottles and buy a bottle of Sugar soap. About $4.50. Use it dilluted in spray bottles, best cleaner I have used and a bottle last ages. Excellent as a spot cleaner on carpet too.
I always buy several of any items that are on special and build up a store of things I use regularly, and only buy meat that is on special. Always check if store brands are cheaper. Don't buy junk food for snacking - A batch of scones or pikelets.. caramel popcorn, are very cheap ways to fill the 'want something yummy' gap - we have forgotten how nice these ordinary things can be. Rice pudding is actually a nice pudding and very cheap if you use milk powder to make up the milk content.

ironically I bought rump steak last night (on special) cheaper than I got my shin fillet stewing steak - certainly pays to watch the specials and stock up when you can.

sumstyle if you find the cheaper cuts of meat grab them cause you can always marinate them by cutting a kiwifruit over them or sandwiching it in with the steak and believe me after 1 hour with the KF on it and its like a fillet steak and just melts in your mouth......washing soda is found in New World by the washing powder

Very keen on making some of this home-made washing liquid. Was just wondering if anyone knows if it would be ok to use for my daughter? She has eczema and at the moment we're only using Percil Sensitive. Pricey stuff.

That baking soda and vinegar oven cleaner is great Just tried it and it's so much better than normal oven cleaner - haven't cleaned the oven in over a year (bad I know) and the gunk just game straight off - thanks

Just wondering re the home nmade soap powder recipe. Why not dilute it a lot less and use less when washing. If I mad it into 1 10 litre container instead of 3 and then used 1/3 of a cup per wash, wouldn't this be the same? take up less room as well.

still not clear to me.... are you able to use washing mixture in a cold water wash.I am going to make it up the way you suggest addington as i had the same thought too. Isn't this thread great. :)

hi... great thread will be trying some of these as we are now having to budget even more now. i was also wanting to know what ratio the sugar soap is and also the washing powder can you use it in cold water as i use cold water washes to save my hot water bill cheers

Hi, Sugar soap - I just throw about 1" of it into a bottle, add water and shake lightly. others may want it stronger but I find this adequate. I got this hint off Simplesavings newsletter, have a look at that site, you have to pay to look at whole site but you can be sent monthly newsletters for free and they have them all archived which you can browse.

Willow4 I took your advice and went to www.simplesavings.co.nz - it is fantastic.
I also reccommend people try to get hold of the book 'How to Live off the Smell of an Oily Rag' by Frank Newman and Dr Muriel Newman. Its an oldie but a goodie. I got mine on TM.

After reading this thread I had run out of liquid hand soap so I grated an ordinary cake of soap, put it in saucepan and added some boiling water to it. When cooled I checked it and it was really thick so just added some more boiling water. One cake of soap refilled a 600ml contained and also 2 pasta sauce type bottles as well. Still quite thick but I keep adding boiling water as needed. Price for all this about 30 cents - not bad. Also has the nice smell of the soap I used as well. i didn't put it on stove but just kept adding the hot water.

silly question though.. I'm really keen to try the liquid soap...BUT I'm thinking, will it go 'off' somehow?

goldgurl - 2007-09-24 12:59:00
130

I dont think it should go off as it is only soap and water. The only thing I can think of that would cause it to go off would be putting into a container that wasn't cleaned properly. It is cheap enough for a "trial and error" try of it. Good luck!

simplesavings.....while a good thread to get savin tips etc dont pay to sign up....you can get just as much advise on her on cost saving tips as any paid website combined would have...Melford has the Handy Hints and I have starting this thread, there is also the What did you bake thread which altho i started has been well recieved in the trademe community and everyone has responded by contributing there tried and true recipes, theres also a new one called what do you make from scratch(not sure who started that one) and im sure if you asked a question in any of those threads members would be more than happy to give advise where its needed

there are great cookbooks like alison holst - dollars and sense, and yes the smell of an oily rag series is a orsum selection and they give really good advise, but also searching on here or google for budgeting tips will add to your knowledge and you may learn something that we dont know as well.......check out the vinegar or baking soda cleaning sites they give you all the benifits of these two and give you cleaning recipes and health recipe for them quite and interesting read.....there are heaps of home made baby websirtes as well which show you how to make baby food, baby wipes(home made)nappies, towels that you personalise etc etc the worl\ds at your fingertips so never feel that you have to pay for a site as once youve looked at it what then

kob - 2007-09-28 06:37:00
134

we have been making the liquid soap for ages now..I have found it depends on the bar of soap you use, as to how much liquid it will make [trial and error] Protex soap~ Grate-pour over 2 litres hot water, stir till dissolved and dispence into containers..but Johnsons baby soap..needs 2.5-3 litres water!!..It set hard in the containers with the 2 litres, so I had to squeeze it all out..add more boiling water and pop in microwave to melt and blend thoroughly!
What a saving this soap is with kids!

And..with dairy prices going up.. I cut and pasted this from someone in here the other day..looks good.
SPREADABLE BUTTER:

500g soft real butter
200ml sunflower oil or olive oil
The sunflower oil contains less cholesterol than olive oil.
200ml cold tap water
Put the soft butter in a mixing bowl and mix till it is a soft consistency. Add slowly the oil mixing on a medium to high speed all the time. Then add the water and lower the speed otherwise it will splash around. After a while the water has emulsified with the butter and oil and you can get the speed up again. Store the spreadable butter in glass jars.

Awesome! We have been using the laundry liquid for a couple of weeks now, cold water wash except towels and t-towels etc, and i made up some liquid soap last night and added a couple of drops of food colouring to it, gave it a pale pink colour, just to make it look pretty!

Storing spreadable butter... in the glass jars, can we then freeze them or is it best to store in pantry?

darryl96a - 2007-10-08 19:56:00

Spreadable Butter I have been making spreadable butter since it first appeared on here and I just saved my old margarine containers and thoroughely washed them with hot soapy water and re-used them and find they are perfert size for freezing and the lid keeps other smells from getting in. I always store it in the fridge.
