I reckon you can never have too much wool either

#Post

Morning all. Just popping in to say hi... Have a few things to do up the road this morning. Then I will come home and sort the colours for a rasta doll.

Have a good day all

morning ladies :) Housework (yep, that dreaded word) is almost done, one more load of washing to do and vacum. The Furry One will help me with that part lol. My sister is coming for lunch and leaving her dog with us for the weekend then I might get some time to knit or sew. HUsband found some pliers for me he doesn't need so I can bend and cut wire for my stumpwork - a bit of Spray n Wipe and they came up lovely and clean lol. Just as well he hoards stuff too so he understands when I start new projects.
happy knitting :)

Morning all.... Funny you should mention pliers Kwiwmade, yesterday we had to pop into mitre10 for grinding disks and I said to MrP I wanted some bull nosed pliers for my tool box. I have long nose ones, but not the square ones.
I almost fainted, $15 for some that had been sold out lol and the next cheapest were $30 up... Ill go to the cheapie shops next time Im up the road and get some from there. I might have to consider getting a bigger toolbox too mines jam packed.. MrP made it years ago and nice old fashioned kids type one wooden.

Today I will start this Maori Rasta doll for my friends partner. Have to kinda make it up as I go colourwise, cos I haven't had a chance to check things with him, his sister died yesterday.

But unless I get any toy orders my next project is going to be a challenge.

I was looking at cushion cover patterns last night on here. Saw a basket weave one I really liked.
Then sometime through the night I thought what about knitting a blanket in strips then weaving them together. Will mean a lot of work, especially sewing up, but I might cheat and use the machine. But it will also mean it will be double thinkness.
Ive got some cones of wool which Ive had for ages, brown and cream. So I could alternate then for colour as well.
I could be mad and just knit the single strands and it would be light even in two layers, or I might get my wool winder out and ply up some.

Ive never knitted a blanket before only crochet. So it will be a challenge but something easily put down if a toy order comes along.

Do you reckon it would work?

Bad back today so Ill be sitting and knitting.

morning :) the throw I knitted and the one I'm knitting now (same yarn, had too much of it) is 4 ply and I'm knitting by hand. Doesn't take that long but I suppose I'm used to knitting 4 ply after all that baby knitting. I like it as it's nice and light and not bulky looking as I want it for over the back of the couch. If you were wanting it for a bed then double knitting or bigger would be more practical - would be quicker to knit and warmer. And as you say, you could pick it up and put it down whenever it suits. Knitting in strips is brilliant! Saves lotttsss of sewing up so less joins. Wish I had thought of this years ago lol.
Happy knitting :)

meant to add, making a throw like this is also a fun way to learn new stitches and if you get bored with one, then change to another lol. You could make a plain border between each strip (add onto your knitting if that makes sense) and maybe do the border pattern between colour/pattern changes. Just some ideas :) I often use my 4 ply by knitting two colours together to make something a bit different too. Good way to finish off those end bits of yarn/wool.

kiwimade64 - 2013-06-08 09:56:00
1406

Or popeye you could crochet it in basket weave pattern? Just a thought.

kuaka - 2013-06-08 11:35:00
1407

Kiwimade I like the idea of having a border on it.. Could also if Im crazy enough knit strips of say 10 stitch strips to sew over the joins.

I know what you mean about knitting them in long strips, id not heard of it till my cleaner friend told me. Saves a lot of sewing. Although in my case Ill be having plenty.
I have been delayed tho lol, MrP asked me if I would make a cowboy doll to send to his brother. They have a country music group and hold an annual hoedown to raise money for different charitys. So MrP asked if Id make a doll for one of the raffles.
Also thinking instead of having to ply up the thin wool Ill just use deramores lol

Kuaka I can only crochet by doing one big square, going round and sound. I cant do rows of straight. But when the family do visit I will ask sister in law to show me how to do rows. Why I never asked mum to show me I don't know lol.. too late now..

popeye333 - 2013-06-08 12:33:00
1408

If you were closer popeye I could show you. Just relaxing for half an hour - I've just come down off the roof with the wire brush - I'm getting there slowly - it's a big roof, but it will be worth it when it's all done.

Afternoon all. Gosh popeye and kuaka, you are busy lizzies indeed.

I went to a card making class this morning. Wish I had more time for my hobbies. Counting down to retirement now - 3 1/2 years, lol. Can't wait as then I'll definitely have more time for my hobbies.

Have just come back from taking Quinn dog for a walk. Going out to my girlfriend's place in the country tomorrow for a week. She is the same friend I'm going to New York with. Her husband is away hunting so we are going to go on walks etc with the dogs and then spend quite a bit of time either knitting / crocheting and in my case, hope to finish cross-stitching the birth sampler I'm doing.

I really should be sorting out things to take and get the house tidied instead of sitting here with the laptop!

Will sit down later and watch the rugby. Go the All Blacks!! :-)

kuaka - 2013-06-08 15:47:00

popeye if you use a flat mattress stitch to sew your strips together you won't see the seam and you can just add the extra stitches for your border into your knitting.
Wow kuaka, you're still 'at' the roof! Good on you :) And Pats, I bet you are counting down the days to the big trip :)

You will be sick of the site of the roof by the time your done Kuaka.., but it will be nice when done.

Thanks for the offer Kuaka, my sil Cindy is as good as I am at crochet lol.. only she can only do rows not rounds haha. A perfect pair. She doesn't know she will be showing me how to do it yet lol, but Ill make sure she does next time they come up.

I just hope Im not about 100 by the time I get the blanket done lol.. still Rome wasn't built in a day hahaha.

Pats make sure you go to an internet Café and say hello from the Good Ole US of A while your gone... nooo you will be having a blast Im sure.

At least it's warm up on the roof at this time of the year (when it's not too windy) not like last summer when we were repairing it and it was 40 degrees up there, hubby melted the soles off two pairs of shoes. And I haven't been up there for a week so thought I'd better do some today - plus the view from up there is even better than it is from indoors. BUT it is hard work, and I'm probably going to take twice as long as I originally thought, but as popeye says, Rome wasn't built in a day, and if I snuff it in the night someone else can do it. I'm certainly won't break any records- unless it's for the longest time taken to paint a roof.

Popeye- isn't there anything on YouTube on crocheting in rows? or you may even find a book at the library, try the children's hobbies section if there is nothing in the adult section. I could try and explain it if you can't find anything to help you, but I'm not too good with words but I'll give it a go if required. :-}

omgggg nannymaid! That is just gut wrenching. At least mine was four ply over 151 stitches with only a bit of yon, sl1, k2tog, psso and only five rows! The worst part for me is always knitting/purling that first row after unpicking. Would love to see a pic of the shawl when finished :)

The shawl is finally ready to go to the customer. Don't know how to get a photo up on here, learnt how to put it up on a knitting forum I belong to, but there is a place to click onto when posting on that site if you want to add a photo. Can anyone help me on here, otherwise I will have to wait until my son visits next week and then I can put up a photo.

let's see if I can explain how to put a photo up - sometimes it's easier to do it than try to explain to someone how to do it. Right, go to "my trade me", go to "my photos", then "upload photos". Once you've done that you have to "view my photos", click on the one you want to upload, and that should enlarge it. If it doesn't enlarge it you might have gone wrong somewhere. If it enlarges, then go to the top of the page and highlight the stuff in the box at the top, should start with http://images and then some blurb. Copy it, and then you can paste it into the message.

Gawd. It sure sounds complicated. Can't be that difficult. I've done it before now.

I did it! Thanks for the instructions. This is the shawl I mentioned earlier, finally finished and ready to be sent to the customer, took a couple of weeks longer than usual - lots of family happenings held things up quite a bit. Hope the next one doesn't take as long...i.e - don't make such a 'muck-up' as I did with this one!

Wow that is beautiful nannymaid. I see now why you couldn't leave a mistake in it.. I love knitting thin wool lol. Id rather knit thin than thick really.

I remember wayyyyy back when I was about 12 we all knitted bailing twine shoulder bags... What a job, but they did look cool when done. That was the late 70s lol.
Ive done one leg and almost the foot on the cowboy. Just wasn't with it yesterday.

Pouring here so a good day to get a little housework done and knit me thinks.

nannymaid that is just absolutely beautiful. It looks very fine - 2 ply maybe? I couldn't knit in 2 ply but I have a lovely pattern for a 2 ply crocheted shawl which I have made many times.

Not raining here at the moment, but the sky is very black. Hubby announced yesterday afternoon that it probably wouldn't rain till about midnight - well he was 20 minutes out, it started raining at 20 past 12. His comment was in response to me noticing we had a "mackerel sky" and he said he'd never heard of it. "Mackerel sky - 3 day wet, 3 days dry!"

I might try to do some long-overdue tidying up today and might even get the vacuum cleaner out - don't faint ladies - and then do some knitting. I certainly won't be getting up on the roof today that's for sure.

Hi all
Pats not sure about more hobby time when retired but it is certainly great not being tied down to someone else's work times.

That shawl is fantastic Nannymaid - I've only ever knitted 2 shawls and that was about thirty years ago, I started one for my sister and was part way through when the other sister said that she too was pregnant so had to do one for her too.

Went to spotlight yesterday and they had a real good bargain on sock wool so despite having decided not to increase my wool stash it has grown by quite a lot. Oh well enough wool now to keep me going for the rest of winter and I will have to knit the planned socks as a change from baby clothes.

Thank you ladies for all your lovely comments about the shawl. Yes it is done in 2ply, I love that ply for shawls, any thicker and they are not so delicate looking. This design is my favourite one to make. especially as I only have to sew up the 4 corner seams at the end. Usually takes me about 2 to 3 weeks but this one stretched to 4.5 weeks so glad to get it out of the way.

For the shawls which have the edging sewn on later - I have asked a few times and not got any help - how do you get around the corners so that the edging still lies flat? I'm sure I saw somewhere to allow about 4 inches of edging for the corner, but didn't say how much to allow either side of the corner on the main piece for stitching the edging to........does that make sense? hmmmmmm! Can anyone help with any ideas?

popeye, can i place an order with you please?.
My sister is getting married next year and i would like to give them the bride and groom dolls from the Jean Greenhowe book "Little Gift Dolls". They are shown on the back cover.
I am not confident doing them myself and would prefer someone with more experience to make them.

Yep whiskey can do for you. Since there is no huge rush I will do them inbetween other orders if that's ok, otherwise can do when Ive finished the one Im doing.
Yay I haven't made those before , so will be nice to be doing something different.
I finished the main body piece of the cowboy last night.. Hes a nice simple boy but will look cute I think.
I think I was bordering ona migraine yesterday. My head was terrible and by the end of the day I felt sick too. But I wouldn't give into it. Much better today.

morning ladies :) Gosh there are some nice people out there - a complete stranger just knocked on our door and told us our pekin ducks were a bit close to the main road so she herded them back for us :). They do wander along the side of the road and can be a hazard. We're forever chasing them back too.
Overcast and bleak here today, library visit, revamp CV and maybe some knitting or sewing.
Happy knitting :)

Hello all, you have all been busy people while I've been away from the thread. Love the shawl nannymaid - I do a lot of shawls too, they're my favourite thing to knit and 2 ply is the only way to go.
I'm pleased to announce that I can finally knit without pain, now that the area on my index finger has healed following the removal of a growth (benign).
Have had a sad time, my favourite uncle passed away 8 days ago, and an aunt passed away on the morning of my uncles funeral. Twisted my ankle coming down the steep hill at the cemetery and have a nasty cough after standing in the biting cold wind, so feeling just a bit miserable today. Couldn't face the 3 hour drive each way by myself to aunts funeral today and am sad that I can't be there even though my cousins were very understanding.
It's cold bleak day here so staying warm and trying to catch up on some knitting orders is the plan for me. Hope it's a good day wherever you are, take care all xo

Kuaka we lived in Mangakino for quite a number of years and it always felt like home.. A lot of people think it was the dregs of society living there. But it was good for us.
Its on the Waikato river so draws the fog in. And also down in a hollow.

On a bad day the fog would lift at 1pm and be back down at 3pm.. So glad I didn't have to worry about getting kids clothes dried.

I wouldn't live there now tho, cos we need to be closer to hospitals etc. But it will always hold a piece of my heart.
We were there when Murray Stretch the cop was killed, he had been at our place the night before he died. That brought the community even closer than it was.
Ill never forget the night the killers house was burnt out... Supposedly a wiring fault, but they don't generally start burning at both the back and front door. He was up the side street that we lived on the corner of. Heaps of people walked to the house and stood very quietly watching it burn down. The fire brigade made sure it didn't reach any other houses but basically let it burn down to nothing.
It was like a cleansing in a way.
The best dr there too,, his best part of advice, was to keep breathing lol

Maible what a hard time for you... Good news re your finger. At least you can rest the ankle and knit at the same time.

Hi popeye, thank-you very much for knitting the bride and groom. Just fit them inbetween other things. Mac (the foxy) has caught a mouse this morning. (Better than a cat) that has been hiding in the cupboard. We have mice problems each winter but Mac seems to have them under control. We learnt very early on to put all our packet food stuff in tupperware containers so i didn't have to worry about the mouse nibbling throu anything.

Your welcome Whiskey.

You have reminded me that my lazy 8 kilos boycat has not brought any mice in this year. Hes probably too slow now lol
Love Foxies, we have had three over our time.

I used to sell Tupperware and trust me Mice will chew through it if hungry enough.. Ive seen the results lol... But yep it generally slows them down.

Have knitted the hair for the cowboy.. had ti hunt down some 4.5 mm needles... Only have one pair and they are sooo long.. So some shorter ones are on my deramores shopping list..
Being norty tonight, making MrP a mince pie for tea, Im having pasta which is equally as bad for diabetics but I cant remember the last time I had some

popeye333 - 2013-06-10 15:56:00

Morning all.. Just a hint of fog this morning,. Must put a load of washing on too.
Did the hands and ears of the cowboy last night too. So hes coming along nicely.
Going to get MrP in the garage today and sort through his mess of tools and whittle them down a bit. Want to nab back my wee tack hammer too that he pinched ages ago lol
Have a good day all

Sunny here but cold - not long till the shortest day, then the sun starts to come back but it usually gets colder (an old friend of mine used to say "as the days get longer, the cold gets stronger). Roll on summer. Going to do some knitting for a while this morning, but I really must do a bit of housework (dirty word) and then my usual Tuesday afternoon out.

kuaka - 2013-06-11 08:58:00
1435

The wind is up now, so getting cooler.. but the grey clouds are in too.. The washing is under the porch so it should be ok for a while. Will have to finish it in the hotwater cupboard or dryer.
Well I went to the garage this morning and started folding up the blue tarpaulins, MrP followed and we managed an hour down there. Half a bag of rubbish and he can see the top of his work bench again.
Still have to go through the drawers and a big old tool chest. but he has agreed he has way to many tools. So we will sort through them and keep a good set of everything, and list the rest. Going to be a mission.,But he realises that it needs to be done.
Instead of looking for things he would just buy a new one.
tried cutting the tyres for the garden this morning.. MISSION ABORTED lol,,, we got one done, way to hard for him to do. And he got covered in the sticky black filthy greasy rubber. clothes went into the bin, Im not putting that in my washing machine.

Ajax spray and wipe got the worst of it off, and then he got to enjoy a facial with St Ives apricot scrub lol...

The mandarins tree and black berries are protected, we have some 4 by 4s that will go around the passionfruit.
Im really pleased he told me to move the car tho cos it would have been covered in the muck.
I pinched me a hammer and retrieved my tack hammer that went missing in action from my tool box a long time ago..
Knitting later

afternoon ladies :) haha popeye, sounds like you've had a productive day. MrK's mancave is his space and he keeps it however he likes. He has sooo many tools too but is a mechanic and now woodworker. He is slowly deciding which tools he will be selling now he is retired but they are very hard to let go off... bit like our craft stashes!
I'm out in the garden today while the weather is nice, just come inside for lunch. Am digging up the canna lillies I sprayed 3 times with roundup. They are so invasive and have taken over a big corner of the garden. Am trying my darndest to convince MrK three shrubs have to go! Think I am almost winning this one lol.
I'll try and get some knitting done later but want to make the most of the mild day - perfect for digging and weeding.
Happy knitting :)

Morning all... Everyone must have been busy yesterday.. Today is warmer but theres a mix of blue and dark grey out there.

I managed to get the arms , wristbands, belt, 2 scarf pieces and 2 fronts of the chaps on the cowboy done yesterday. Think I have about 6-8 pieces left, and I don't have any other plans other than knitting.

So have a good day all

popeye333 - 2013-06-12 08:58:00

morning :) I've been outside in the garden but MrK is driving me nuts... if he doesn't like the way I'm weeding the garden he can dam well do the whole thing himself (and it takes me a full on week to do). I've come inside to avoid him for a while.
The traffic has slowed down now, guess everyone is at the Field Days. Has been crazy the amount of traffic going by.
Will try and knit this afternoon :)
Happy knitting :)

I've just come home from a stitch & bitch session, from there I walked the rest of the way into town (it's only a few minutes walk) and stopped at the post shop and collected my Deramores order. 3 huge bags full, and of course because I'd walked to town, and arranged to meet his nibbs, I had to carry the 3 big slippery bags and the other two bags I had with me, until I found where he'd parked. He looked at the silver bags but didn't ask. I suspect he realised from the squishy look of them, and the fact that they weren't heavy, that it might be more goodies to add to my stash.

kuaka - 2013-06-12 13:22:00
1440

At least they have good weather for the field days today eh Kiwimade. We went ohh must be 10-11 yrs ago and it was foggy and freezing... Well before my life on blood thinners, but I ended up buying a hat to keep me warm I had a jacket but was the coldest Ive ever been. Fair enough about the weeding... if they are silly enough to pass comment they then get the chance to show us how to do it lol

Lol Kuaka at not being able to hide that stash.. Bet you were getting looks walking up the street with those bag.

We just popped over to the warehouse cos MrPs slippers are covered in the black stuff from the tyres, leaving foot prints everywhere. They have Rosies acrylic either 3 or 400 grams cant say I looked lol for $10. So I got a white and red. couldn't hide that since MrP was with me.

Have only done one of the back pieces of the chaps so far today.. Oh well plenty of time to knit while watching tv tonight

popeye333 - 2013-06-12 14:48:00
1441

I brought the new addition to the stash home and plonked all three bags on the settee. I opened them while he was busy doing his stint on his exercycle, checked everything and then transferred it all to a large rubbish bag which is now sitting beside and is almost full. He still hasn't mentioned it. I think he has probably mentally rolled his eyes even if not physically rolled them!

kuaka - 2013-06-12 20:25:00

morning ladies :) I'm having a wee chuckle at your post kuaka, too funny.
Back into the garden today, really need to get the weeding finished. If I can do this mid-winter weeding then it saves lots of extra work in springtime. Husband is pruning shrubs for me (I can do it but he likes to do it). Once it's all done it just a matter of waitng until around August to prune the roses.
Foggy as heck here this morning and loads of traffic heading for the Field Days. Tomorrow will be busier though as Friday is traditionally the busiest day out at Mystery Creek.
Will get some knitting done this afternoon when I come back inside.
Happy knitting :)

Morning all... clear here yay...

Thankfully MrP doesn't complain too much about the wool... I got two big balls from the warehouse yesterday.

Gotta get the groceries this morning. Will take MrP.. Make him get a little walking in. Something he doesn't do enough of even tho he cant do much a little is better than nothing.

HAve a good day all

popeye333 - 2013-06-13 08:28:00

Ha popeye, my other half doesn't complain either, he just thinks I'm mad, and I think he's concerned that I won't live long enough to use it all. But he's got lots of things he's bought as projects to keep him out of mischief, and some of them are just sitting no closer to being worked on than the day he bought them, and most were far more expensive than my yarn addiction.

I have finally finished knitting the cowboy. Will start putting him together later today...
I feel the need to go to the oppy this morning.

Warm here today. had a nice thunder storm over night. And what with that and getting up with cramp three times Ive had a very broken sleep. I even put the fan on in the bedroom I was soo warm

Hope everyone is well.. Take care all

afternoon ladies :) I've had a busy morning, paid a few bills and registered the Furry One for another year. Was a bit early for paying his rego but he needs a new collar and the old rego is stuck to the collar. Needed to be paid for eventually anyway.
The suns out and it's lovely and warm, I should be back outside but have placed another order with Deramores instead.
The lovely shawls I've seen knitted here have inspired me to have a go at knitting one for our grandy. I've never knitted 2ply before but have crochet cotton table cloths, so know I can do 'bigger' projects. Can't wait for the order to arrive lol.
Happy knitting :)

I've just come back from "the red shed" where we bought a treadmill 'cos his nibbs' blood pressure was very high the other day, so he hopes this will help. While I was there I just happened to see the 400g balls of Rosies yarn at $10 and even though I just received $100 worth from Deramores on Wednesday I realised I hadn't bought any red, so thought to myself "why not?" and got a ball. Would have liked to have bought more but thought I should use up at least some of what I've got before buying more.

Now to assemble the treadmill. Fortunately it came in a box full of pieces, otherwise I would never have been able to lug it up the stairs, so I unpacked it downstairs and brought it up bit by bit.

Deramores should be paying us commission for all the people we have put onto it.. lol
Spoke to my sister in law this afternoon and I have her order written up.$63 worth so Dammm !!!! lol Ill have to spend $50 to get the free postage.. Life is tough Lol.
Kuaka I happened to buy two balls of Rosies the other day too. The red and a white. In toys that you don't see the legs and butt I like a firmer wool than the James C Brett so they stand up.
Hope His Nibbs likes the treadmill after all that effort.

Ha popeye, getting the treadmill upstairs was the easy bit it turned out! What a job, took me over two hours, talk about working up a sweat. By the time I'd finished I certainly didn't need to use it, I felt like I'd done a hard session at the gym. And then I had a quick go on it, it's much harder than the exercycle. So then I brought some firewood in just in case we need to light the fire in the next day or so, then put my feet up and enjoyed a glass of wine and got the knitting needles busy.
