BUDGETS.....who needs them....ME

I have a version of clothes washing powder similar to the one posted here by Kob, but it stays a powder. My workmate who has really itchy skin gave it to me. And it has helped her heaps. She uses a food processor and blends 1kg of washing soda with 1 bar of sunlight soap up into a powder. (you can also use sard soap for the eucalyptus smell) We use 1 teaspoon of powder per wash. It seems to dissolve fine but I'm paranoid and mix it with a cup of hot water and pour into a filling machine then. I do cold washes and my clothes come out clean.

and for those people that use disposable razors to shave their legs etc, you get heaps more use out of them if you dry them after (I just shave a towel backwards lol). Another tip is to regularly shave a hard fabric like denim backwards, this sharpens them somewhat. I tried these tips and they at least doubled the useage time :)

oh my oh my I made up a new salad last night thought id share it with you.....i normally make a dressing which goes over a variety of vegetables which is 1/2 cup white wine vinegar 1/2 cup of oil 1 dessertspoon of curry powder & 1/2 cup of sugar, bring to the boil and cool and pour over salad, BUT i didnt have any oil so when i was hunting around for the veg I wanted I realised I didnt have what I wanted in them either SO I grabbed a bag of cooked rice out of the freezer & defrosted it in the microwave, cut up 2 stalks of green sping onion, 1 tomato, 1 stick of celery added a few slivered almonds, a handfull of cranberries, a grated carrot, then added rice and stirred, and for the fun part, I looked in my fridge and there was half a bottle of pams french dressing ( clear salad dressing) so i heated up that in a pot and added 1 dessertsppon of curry powder brought to the boil and poured over my rice and vege, OH MY GOD its the bomb abit of S&P and its the yummiest rice salad ive tasted, I reckon it even tops the rice salad you buy at the deli section of the supermarket (bombay rice), you could add anything you had, BUT that all I had to add sio that worked for us, and this morning I sneaked a spoonful of it and its even better left over night so will be finishing it off tonight with some chicken pieces. TRY IT YOU WILL LOVE IT..... so because it was so on spot I have claimed the right to call its ..........KOB Best ever Ricey RIce Salad

Curried French dressing.... mmmm certainly makes you think.

I like this one....

Toadies "White Rice Salad"

Dressing: ¼ Cup Olive Oil, ¼ Cup White wine vinegar, 2 teaspoons curry powder, 1 teaspoon Sugar, Juice of 1 lemon. Mix the dressing up in a screw top Jar.

Put your leftover rice (or cooled rice) in a bowl and add what you fancy. I have added ½ cup (ish) of raisins, and about ¼ cup each of sunflower and pumpkin seeds. But you could add anything in the salad line. Tastes delish.... just let it stand for a while to let the rice soften... but tastes delicious already.

oh toady you bet me I was just going to say I went to Plamy in the weekend and did heaps of xmas shopping Farmers had a $3 table and you got 1 small nut bowl & one cheese knife for $3 BUT you then got one free, so for $3 you got 2 of each so my god I was so excited I almost wet my pants and brought 12 sets, the ladies were cracking up but as I do secret santa, and have lots of pressies to give I thought that was massive, can give pates and cheese on a glass circle with the knives and on another galss circle ($4 warehouse) i can do small bwols of roses, nuts and hand made choc (like annabel made on sat night melted white & dark choc poured over nuts cooled cut and placed in bowls)......ok Living & giving had huge swimming towels in the shape of a surf board for $7 blue & red so i have 4 nephews so I got 4, then the ware house had jandels 2 pair for $8 and 2 pairs of swimming trucnks for $16 so for $19 ( my limit for xmas is $20 each gift)the nephews all got a towel trunks and jandels & i might grab some sunscreen at the supermarket if I see it on a good special maybe.......so my spare room looks very full and productive, got the kids stuff two but as they read this thread secretly (so they think) i wont be silly enought to say what they got, but as my son got engaged last weekend and I needed a mummy present from the haeart(they cost me enogh money outside of special occasions) wait for it SNAPFISH has photo keyrings for $3.95 so i took a lovely photo that we took over the weekend we celebrated their engagment and had them both made a key ring each, $7.90 definately a gift of love straight from the heart, LOL would love to hear you xmas tips and tricks, 123 store which i never have been into had xmas wrap at great prices 3 packs for $1.50 so i got 4 of those, and xmas cards little tiny wee ones which I thought would be a novelty still cost 60c to post but something different, and lots of xmas themeed platters for $2 that way if you have a few to many wines out at your friends and forget the platter you took it doesnt matter it was only $2 ( I still panice tho and ring the next day)have a reat day ladies time for shower and work

I hear you sister..... I made a special trip to countdown yesterday.. on the pretence of buying milk for work.... but the real reason and what really put a smile on my dial was getting 2 x shampoo and 2 x conditioner for $20 on special, instead of retail of overe $32!! So for a treat (I never buy Mags except from Op Shops) I brought the New Idea as it had a "goody Bag" so for $4.10 I got the current Magazine.. plus samples of crackers, a mesuli Bar, Moistuirser sample, comfort washing liquid sample, doggie treat sample.... AND last weeks Magazine and a Cool Charm deoderant which is valued at over $3 and its something i would usually buy, so I figure I got my treat of 2 Magazines to read for $1.... I tell you a better high than chocolate!!

We always do a wee treats hamper for the neighbours... Wine, nibbles, choccie etc....

Was thinking of what to put it in, last year I got some cool star wickers baskets from a clearance place at $2 each but that was a one off...

This year I thought maybe being more practical and putting it in a 10 litre bucket with Tinsel and Sellophane... costs a couple of dollars for the bucket then they can use if afterwards... I think you can have too many wicker baskets hanging around... what do you think? Any better Ideas?

my latest tip would be, after buying a deodorant, 60 mils for $5.00, going back for another bottle, Sorry out of stock, but this is the same, I was told. 30 mils $5.00. mm I ended up buying 700 mils of the same brand, Triple Moisturising body wash, $5.00. I refiled my bottle with that. So far it is working very well. I just hope in the heat of Summer it will work as well. The original bottle had a bit on the bottom you turned around that squeezed the cream up and out like a tooth paste, It had a large dome shape at the top. Dove, product.
Filling it proved a challenge. I had to use a large eye dropper thingy. I may look at popping out a ball on another brand bottle next time.

toady why not get a herb theme going and give each neighbour a different herb, that way you know all the herbs are covered when you need one for the teas and it keeps the neighbour hodd spirirt going cause your keeping in touch with everyone to borrow herbs, you can get those herb containers from the warehouse for a couple of bucks and the plants are as cheap as chips still celophane them or tie a xmas ribbon, k mart had heaps of ribbons for $1.50 a roll

pickles I do that with shampoo and liquid soap, we end up with about 5 diff shampoos ontop of our shower so I tell everyone im having a throw out, no one listens and all i do is I condense the shampoos into one bottle and throw away the emptys make a big noise about the wates of shampoo having to throw away wastage, (little do they know) they all roll there eyes and think silly woman, BUT im not silly at all ive got there number, and the shampoo goes on and on, liquid soaps I grab a 2 L container from bin in and just refill or get those budget shampoos for $2 when on special and use that for hand soap I have made my own but dont have the time to do all that stuff now so its convenience

coffee fugde, was 1 packet of crushed arrowroot biscuits 2 tablespoon of instant coffee then i pour over 125 grams of butter and 1/4 tin of condensed milk, mixed together placed in a lined square tin and set in fridge, once chilled iced with coffee icing and sprinkled walnuts over it rechilled and cut

kob - 2010-11-14 08:21:00
1421

chocolate was, i melted half a bag of milk choc melts in a double boiler and also in another one i meltd half a bag of white choc melts, while those were melting i chopped up some peacan nuts and almonds, and in a lined swiss roll tin i made two rows of nuts (divide width ways the tin into 4 sections) section one gets dark choc, section 2 pecans section 3 white choc section 4 almonds, once choc is in use the a knife edge and drag from left to right to mix up the nuts and choc so you end up with a wirl, if you watched annabel langbeins programme lsat week, its a version of hers but i didnt use rich high volume cocoa chocolate i used pams, still wotked fine, was a hit, anyway, set in fridge, then turn out and cut into small sqaures but it breaks easily so just small sections, this was obviously the dearest to makes $3 .30 for choclate, $5.00 for the two bags of nuts

hehe have had abit of fun this morning yesterday I brought a almost brand new bean bagfor $15 and as our family is always expanding there are never enough seats and this matches our lounge suite, but it did smell like it had belonged to a dog so had fun and quite a mess emtping the beans and gave the bag a good soaking and hot wash NOW for the fun part, I am copyrighting this design so while it may aid to help someone do not sell this idea LOL
ok step one make your contraption
http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/29/150402629_full.jp
g

then isert contraption into the bean bag cover
http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/88/150402688_full.jp
g

http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/8/150402708_full.jpg

then take your bag of polystirine balls and scopp a few out of the bag until it gets to a pourable level
http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/31/150402731_full.jp
g

then when its pourable use your left hand to hold contraption and your right hand to lift bag(of course youve tied it so it only has a small opening)pour through the funnel lifting all the time
then once its filled you have a full bean bag which is clean and dandy
http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/49/150402749_full.jp
g

hehe feel quite proud of myself and reckon I ended up with about an icecream container of flyaways on the bathroom floor

Confetti Dip - 2 eggs (whisked) 2 tblsp sugar 1 tblsp butter and 2 tblsp vinegar - cook these together in a med. bowl over a pot of boiling water until thickened, remove from heat let cool then beat in a 250g pottle of cream cheese and 2 tblsp tom. sauce or puree until smooth then add half a chopped onion, half a green pepper and half a tomato minus the pulp. I sometimes add some red pepper too, you can add what you want basically. Cheers, enjoy.

That sounds yummy Kob...

Couldn't let this drop too far back....

This will make you laugh.. My Miss 18 is appalled at the lack of shopping skills her boyfrind has. Because he has limited money and freezer space he can't stock up and he had never seen or heard of a "reduced to clear" sticker yesterday I stocked up as they must have just stickered it at New World... he doesn't want charity so he is going to do his shopping... out of my freezer lol. I don't mind helping him out.. in fact I brought 2 x packs of 2 chicken legs with him in mind lol (only $2 each)
and more sausages than I would normally buy at $1.50 a tray.... with BBQ season we will go through them eventually.

Have a great day and don't get caught up in the commercialism of christmas... its about Family and Friends... And "spending" time with each other... not money.

Thought this thread was too useful to lose.

This morning I have made Chocolate Brownies & what our family affectionally call "Fart Slice" which is actually a Weetbix based Meusli slice which comes with some "side effects"... although only if you eat to much of it.
And on the stove simmering is mince for 2 family & 2 individual lasagnes for the freezer. I have already cut the 2 slices up into 12 pieces each slice and gladwrapped them for lunches next week.... in fact one has already gone off with Miss 18 to work today. I will finish my lasagnes and it will still only be 9.30am.

I had a wee chuckle to myself this week, a colleague at work was eating left over KFC for lunch (Bleurgh) , she has recently taken over part time care of her partners childrens and she advised me that Tuesday night was called "Takeaway night" because of all the 2 boys activities... I laughed... I have been doing this parenting thing full time for 18 years and those busy nights are called. "here's something I prepared earlier" nights or "crockpot" nights... or "Macaroni cheese" nights..... The secret really is being prepared and personally I find my early Sunday morning baking/cooking session therapeutic.

I have never done the 2 slices before.. but think I may well add that to my habit.. as the thought of Miss 16 enjoying it at school and Miss 18 enjoying it at Uni warms my heart.. its like they are taken a little bit of me with them... sounds mushy I know but there is more to life than a strict dietary regime.. moderation is the key,

I used $8 worth of mince (2 packs, 1 on special - 600gms & 1 reduced 500gms),2 x budget Lasagne packs (I have tried other brands but funnilly enough at $1 per pack I find these the best), 2 x dolmio bought on special $2.99 each. I chopped up finely 3 onions and grated up 3 carrots and half a massive courgette that someone had given me... I had so much sauce that I ended up with another 2 individual portions that the girls can heat up for lunches, or after school or before sport snack.

No never... When I see them I buy old casserole dishes from the op shop usually about $3-4, they come up glistening in the dishwasher. I don't heat from frozen though, what I normally do is put them in the oven before work frozen and set the automatic timer, that way they defrost during the day and heat from a cold oven... never had a problem. The individual ones, my daugher takes out the morning she needs it and heats it in the microwave at work.

Bumping for April....

I have just turned $11.50 worth of mince into 2 family Lasgnes and 2 Individual ones for DD to take to work on her late nights. I have also turned some soft apples and nashis that no one was eating into 2 delicious apple crumbles that are cooking as I type.... will pop all into the freezer for those manic nights. Thought the crumble would be good after a soup night.... I try not to waste anything... and its a joke in my family that I will make them eat it one way or another... although the whole household approves of the crumbles. Yesterday a very kind neighbour dopped off some beautiful steaks... and I already had chicken legs defrosted (They were frozen reduced to clear so needed to be cooked)... so I turned those into a casserole for the freezer and we had the most devine BBQ'd scotch fillet... nothing goes to waste.

My bargain of the week was PYO Apples coming back from Whangamata... 90c a kilo and so lovely to have a crisp sweet apple that you know hasn't been sitting in the pack house for 12 months. We are still working our way through the 2 huge shopping bags we picked.

Hello. I been checking in on this post for sometime with out commenting. There is some great tips here. I would like to share with you.
With my children gone back to school we have made a big effort this term to bike. I have notice the difference with biking my youngest child to and from school, filling up the car once a month instead of fornightly ($50).
I had one mother tell me it was my fault that they were biking as they had been passing us in their car. I told her that it inspired her child.
