| Stormbaby does your husband have a fishing vest, cause you can get them quite cheap at kmart or some store like it and get his name sewing embroidererd onto it, or personilise it sonehow, we did it for my son when he was right into fishing i still have it even now add heaps of flies and hooks etc etc to it pack a snack package to go along so that he will be refreshed next fishihgn trip, or a voucher book with a fishy theme, ideas could be a cook up of your catch, a friend for a day, cleaning the fishy fishing gear, and so on theres heaps of ideas there maybe somethihng will suit.......its all about fun, seen some cool personilise plates while away for $12 you can get a plate sorround why not get a fishy one and although its not going on a personilised plate will be the same, gift shops type have them, there were some real good ones kob - 2010-01-10 06:20:00 |
| have to tell you over xmas i went to make a salad, and hadn't cooked my eggs long enough so i used the idea someone had at the beginning of the thread about wrapping the eggs in gladwrap and reboiling it worked a treat and problem was solved without turffing out the eggs and starting again which i was going to do, so thanks for the tip who ever placed it you saved my bacon (well eggs really).....HAPPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE, may it be a safe and happy one kob - 2010-01-10 06:24:00 |
| Happy New Year to you as well KOB.... Lets make it a goal of 2010... that we meet up!!! No more sneaking up to Auckland without letting me know!!! Seriously wishing you & your family all the best for 2010. Take care JB toadfish - 2010-01-10 06:38:00 |
| Well I did it!!! I got me one of those Pak'n'save christmas club cards and set up my direct debit.... I have always liked the principle of christmas clubs but I shop erratically & forget to buy the stickers etc.... but now the first of every month my payment will go out... then I won't have to pay for grocerys in December... will help out with all the present buying..... 1207 | thats a great idea Toadie although you could of set up an acc at your bank and put that money in there and used it the same way, that way you would get the interest and not pak n save.......i used to think the box of chocolates and bags of freebees were orsum but when i thought of the $5 a week they got off me it was $250 odd buck a year they were getting my interest off......DONT FORGET now is a great time to ring the power companies and phone companys even banks and make sure you are on the right plans for your usuage as they wont ring you and tell you your not using your plan properly, its amazing what you will save........every 6 months this should be done and it doesnt cost a thing(apart from at the bank if you change accounts), have a gr8 day everyone kob - 2010-01-15 06:25:00 |
| They give you a bonus, works out about the same as interest.... I had thought of that.... They have a scale but till the end of feb you get $5.37 for every $5... so thats not too bad... then it decreases as the months go by. I just don't have to think of it or have access to it this way.... toadfish - 2010-01-15 07:06:00 |

| welcome to the thread mum2aboy we have been hanging around for many a year now, and its always good to get new faces in here that are keen to save a bob or need advise on some aspect, all of us are mums who through no fault of our own have had to learn to live frugaly and tighten the belts so to speak, so welcome kob - 2010-01-16 06:17:00 |

| Easy Weetbix/Sultana (or what have you) Loaf In a bowl add all of the following - Cover with 2 cups of boiling water and soak for 5mins Add 2 beaten eggs and 2 cups self raising flour. Bake at 160 for 40-60mins. toadfish - 2010-01-17 07:15:00 |
| Just making this for the troops, we seem to have accumulated vast amounts of the crumbs from the bottom of the weetbix packet. I always put them into a large size Mocconna Jar and use them from there, but I also had them in a plastic bag as there were so many of them. Thought this would be nice to have in the cupboards for hungry teens in the school holidays. Its cooking now and if they like it will make a couple more for the freezer. toadfish - 2010-01-17 07:18:00 |
| Afghans are pretty good made with the weetbix (etc.) crumbs too. To save time, press the whole mix into a sponge roll tray, bake and ice as usual, then cut into squares while still warm. punkinthefirst - 2010-01-17 08:01:00 |

| I love this thread - hope it keeps going, my money saving tip would be this - Re-Hair Gel and just about any kind of "gel" product you can usually half the amount you have and add water to it leave it over night and it thickens up ok. angela137 - 2010-02-06 19:26:00 |

| far out talk about stress ahhhh, I have stuck to most of the budget ideas I have from this thread and we were going so well, now my isuanrace has gone up, I am going to have to ring plaes about that to see if i can get it cheaper, and john key wanting to put so many things up in price which he promised he wouldnt, and that means I will prob have to go back to work, I dont want to cause I want my twins to have the same attention our older daughter had from me when they were younger.why does everything go up except the wages ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh (sorry needed to vent) chonnni - 2010-02-12 16:25:00 |
| I was using the washing liquid, and after about 50washes my machine started making weird noses, obviously pipes clogged, i did hot wash etc nothing shifted it i swapped back to normal washing powder and it is sweet now, but i use the washing liquid on my towels and wash clothes with washing powder, seems to keep it all about even and I am still making half the saving chonnni - 2010-02-12 16:52:00 |
| I haven't read the whole thread but my tips are to use powershop online for your power bill (in areas it s available!!) I also make a menu for each week and stick to it like glue. I also walked round the supermarket I go to every week and made a master list that has each aisle in the order I walk them so I never miss anything or have to go back and it makes shopping so much easier and cheaper!!! omakaumum - 2010-02-12 20:21:00 |

Wonder why that was chonni? I have been using it for about 6 months now (and I do 3 washes a day) and it has been fine. Although I do do a hot wash once a week for the nappies, so that may be why. I wonder if anyone else has had any issues? glendeb - 2010-02-13 13:44:00 |
| I use the liquid 95% of the time and have had no problems, but I do washes using commerical powder ever fortnight or so, so I guess all the added extras in the powder flush the pipes?? Do you use white vinegar in the rinse cycle?? That should help clear out any residue. twinsforus - 2010-02-13 15:20:00 |
| The Toadfish Family are having a "Mum hates Waste" Dinner tonight. Take.... 1 x reduced to clear Herb Foccacia (from the freezer) I x left over ham bone from Family birthday So the toadfish are having inside out pizza with soup. I split the foccacia in 2 (like a hamburger bun) and put in the onion, bacon, sun dried tomatoes, marjoram & Cheese and that is in the sandwich press now as I type and the soup which I made last night (so I could skim the fat) is heating up as we speak... great way to use leftovers. We will eat it on the deck in the shade... nom nom nom. Edited by toadfish at 5:46 pm, Sat 13 Feb toadfish - 2010-02-13 17:41:00 |
| I have neve bothered with the washing powder, I wait till its $1.99 or $1.89 and buy heaps. I tried the handwash also but our family didn't like it, I buy the $1.99 for a litre budget handwash and when its in a nice dispenser no one is any the wiser. toadfish - 2010-02-13 17:43:00 |
| toadfish that sounds very yummy, i do this to, watever is leftover from dinner I usually have for lunch the next day on a sammie, yes we never buy washing powder unless its on special, I just cant get he thought of using vinegar in the rinse cycle clear in my head, sound like the clothes would smell so havent tried it, and always do cold washes cause it uses less power, unless we need hot wash on gross kiddie blankets etc chonnni - 2010-02-13 17:48:00 |
| Oh trust me chonnni, your clothes will not smell like vinegar!! If you put it in the fabric softener thingy it goes through the clothes on the first rinse cycle, so by the time it has rinsed and spun out again, there is no smell left. Plus you only use 1/4 cup for a full load of washing. twinsforus - 2010-02-13 18:29:00 |

| hi everyone - just a note to pass on info re fruit and berry prices for bottling and jam making etc. for those near ettrick central otago (won't mention name of orchard in case i get into trouble!) there is a roadside stall opposite a place where you may stop for a cuppa..... they have apricots for 1.50kg (suitable for jam) 2.00kg for bottleing... apples and plums still to come. a little further up the road is another place that has the best berry fruit and they have it frozen for those who would want to hold off making jam straight away..... specials running per 1.5kg on strawberries and rasp's right now - well worth the trip if you are in the area. drive on to roxburgh, through to the other side and check out the lower end of road side stalls as well - well worth the effort - lovely fruit brill prices... 1233 | I was concerned about "meat" shopping when I returned to work full time but have it sorted now.... I pass a "Mad Butcher" every day on the way to work, so keep an eye out for his blackboard specials and leave 5 mins earlier and buy it on the way in to work. Then I just come straight home after work... just feels better than stopping on the way home.. plus the meat selection is great and I am on my own in the shop at that time of day. Sometimes I leave 15 mins earlier and stop off at New World to look for marked down meats & super specials etc... sometimes nothing and last time.... I got 15 meals for $72, including a full priced but on special lovely pork roast. Very pleased with that. Then I just put it in the freezer at work till 5pm. So the freezer is still chocca with excellant deals... just makes me feel good lol. toadfish - 2010-02-15 05:43:00 |
| had to share this with you, a lovely message from my eldest son, Mum well ive got through another week on the skin of my pants with coming home for all the funerals lately its scrapped me for cash so your unidentified meals you give me LOL have got me through it all and saved me from surviving on 2 min noddles and toast all week, thanks again mum i love ya.......isnt that nice so off to make more unidentified meals for said son, I always freeze him stuff if theres extras and he always gets specials like pizzas and yogurts etc if they are reduced and each time he goes home he takes a polystyrine chilly bin fill of meals and food plus his signature bag of ice, so im pleased to be appreciated its a lovely feeling. kob - 2010-02-15 09:35:00 |
| Waves & belated happy new year wishes to my friend kob, how's everything going? Your relationship with your son sounds special. we have only one child a son who tells me positive loving comments and it just touches my heart strings too. 510 - 2010-02-15 09:40:00 |
| HI 510 yes my 2 are my treasures altho 22 and 20 they still ring home to have mum only chats so I think thats orsum, Eldest must of been broke cause he took home pumpkin & sundried tomato soups, leek & kumera soup & i have never ever and I mean never seen him eat soup before, savoury mince and some shop bought pizzas and pies so i guess if your hungry you will eat anything the saying is right, BUT it is nice to know I stopped him from surviving on 2 min noodles all week LOL, his next pile is growing and no soup to be seen in it yet, but i will do him a chicken one seen as he is enjoying them so much, they are all cheap as chips to make and most are left over food from dinner,so all good kob - 2010-02-15 16:34:00 |
| I am reading the $21 Challenge book at the moment, what other similar books can anyone recommend. TIA 510 - 2010-02-17 06:07:00 |
| I would reccommend the Oily rag series. Today I saved $50 on Cat Food - Animates have 25% off premium Food. And $20 from K Mart, they had "girly" products Buy 2 get one free, so stocked up for my 2 teenage girls. So $70 saved on a Sunny sunday.... Not Bad. Last night I had 6 teenagers (plus us 2 oldies) here for tea...and using Domino vouchers we shouted them all dinner before there party, 5 Pizzas (we even had 1 leftover) 2 x 2.25 litre of fizzy and $5 chips cost us $48.50 all up. I know we could have done it cheaper and healthier but its what they wanted and it was a huge treat for them and not something they have very often. Watch your petrol vouchers as well, mine clearly said 10c a litre, the pak and save pump accepted the voucher and then only discounted it 6c, have kept both dockets and emailed them... wasn't happy. Have also entered 3 savings tips on the simple savings site, trying to win a vault membership. Well thats me for now.. bumped up as we were waaaayy back toadfish - 2010-02-21 15:29:00 |
| So I spent $48.50 on the teenagers treat, $20 on new exercise pants so thats $68.50 so .... I am still $1.50 better off.... So I guess the dinner and pants were free.... thats how I like to do my budgeting, still do the nice things but "smartly" and without waste. toadfish - 2010-02-21 15:35:00 |
| Hi toady, happy days aye, Im heading to Aus in June so im back on the savings wagon again, even gave up the mission concert this year unbelievable I know but it all helps, and fun can be had at home without heading away all the time, althou you know me I love nothing more than dinner out, then drinkys and nothing beats that than a good show after wards, the men can play golf till there hearts content and the shops will lomb for us girls, but alas not this year so im guessing I at least saved about almost our airfares maybe by not going, give or take a couple of hundy...........back on the waste not want not shopping list if it can be reused or made into something else it gets done......good stocktaking is also happening as I hate wasting money on stuff I already have as it could go into something else, but i am loving the cooking channel and find loads of ideas to add to my creations on there......still checking in so thought id say hi to all and keep those pennies clanging kob - 2010-02-21 16:36:00 |

| I have followed this thread for a long time being quite envious of the amazing things that people on here can do to save their money and live on a budget - I have tried but as a working mother of 6 I just can't keep our grocery bill under $250.00 per week and this is without cleaning products! So I have a challenge for somebody out there - can you provide me with a shopping list and menu that will feed my family that stays under $250.00 per week. As I work fulltime I don't really have time to run around to several different shops to chase bargains. Your help would be much appreciated!!! junk - 2010-03-02 12:24:00 |
| junk May I suggest to do the following and then get back to us... Sit down whenever you have a quiet moment and write down everything that you all have been using within a week, including items that are very minmal, snacking, fruits, favoured meals, lunches, breakfast, drinks, tea, coffee, everything plus whatever other items you need like cleaners, girly stuff, boy stuff, partner stuff and most importantly - yourself. Look at this list and see where or what one is currently buying and also to note what is being left over at end of week. From there one then thinks quietly, now the main must have, and so on. Sometimes this helps and assists one in fine tuning to satisfy all. Then please get back to us and will take one portion at a time. Hopes this helps. Cheers. valentino - 2010-03-02 16:57:00 |

| went to countdown today and save $25 on my bill, I got 2 x 900g mince packs for $12, we will get 4 meals out of this so $3 per meal. Also got 2 x bags of hellers sausages for $10 which is very cheap as they are $8.50 per packet, butter was on speicla at $2.49 anchor and flora spread was 2 for $5, also pineapple in juice tins big tins were 3 for $3.99 so cheap, i got lots of stuff we use alot that was very cheap, didnt even have to get a raincheck as everything was there this time. Then I went to farmers to get my daughter who is starting school some new clothes as she only had very worn paint covered kindy clothes. and it was 40% off size 3-14 for cardholders, yes i splashed out but got some amazing specials, and I have a younger daughter who will get use out of these too. was a great daya ll round and I won a a5 spiral bound photo book chonnni - 2010-03-04 21:06:00 |
