THE NEW COIN CLUB

#Post
1151

Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again

New Year's resolution: Don't complain about fakes and forgeries as TradeMe staff regard this as attacking another trader and suspend you.

Yes, TM know all about honesty and integrity, and they want nothing to do with either! Would have thought you'd have figured that out by now.

Welcome back, anyway. Great to see you, muzz, lester and others round about the place. Don't be strangers!

Wow! Severus Alexander Sestertius - Big Roman Coin. Listing #: 548381513 This trader with his grading expertise should start his own Third Party Grading Service and do slabbing in New Zealand. He would be flooded with work.

Thank you Tim. My best coin day last year was spending a Sunday in October in the Numismatic Museum in Athens. A magnificent display of ancient coins (and medals) as well as medieval and modern.

Well as a member of the coin cartel you know we'll strive to ensure you get the highest returns on your coins just to irritate the carp out of anyone out there selling vastly overpriced 1915 S nickels. (Especially those who blame the cartel for removing their auctions when all we want to do is see the unanswered questions).

Just be sure to keep this highly confidential information under your hat.

What's a rough date range of coins by country?

If time is on your side, the best bet is to group them by country in quantities of five to ten. Take very good pix. Do you have a camera, and are you decent at taking photos? The easy way with a good camera is to put it on Auto. If you are more motivated, look for a flower icon that is a setting called Macro. This is specifically for the purpose of taking close-up photos. This process is easier with a tripod, though you can stabilise the camera yourself by holding the camera with both hands and placing your elbows on a flat surface above the coins.

It's also better to turn off the flash and shoot with natural sunlight. Cameras that cost more than $100 or so (and maybe some that are less) have a remarkable number of options for taking good pix, but the main point is that good pix of both sides of your coins generally = better returns. Good pix reveal the quality of coins, whether that quality be good or bad.

If you want to know the potential value of specific coins, post pics here and we might be able to offer a guesstimate. Ultimately, the market will decide. If you feel bold, just do $1 reserves. The wheat is quickly separated from the chaff. I'll speak only for myself, if I noticed a gem amongst rocks, I'd point it out to you so you could list the gem on its own with excellent pix.

The first couple pages of this thread has some very useful info on taking photos. We can also provide some links to "values" for coins, but it's important to understand that values are relative to market demand, condition of the coins and relative rarity. Also, there are retail values (what one might pay in a coin store), wholesale values (what the coin store owner pays, which must be less than the selling price) and there are private sale values. There are also yard sale values where people sell treasures for pennies on the dollar of their actual value because yard sales are a terrible place to sell coins as a rule. TradeMe is probably the best place for most people.

Just to give some idea of how arbitrary values can be, a 1917 US quarter made in Philadelphia that's well worn is worth maybe $30. A 1916 quarter of the same design and made in the same place in the same condition could return well over $1000.

Would that be "Nurnberg"? Any chance of posting a pic? See above about how to take a good pic. A tripod helps, but there are ways to do it without a tripod. If you need helping posting a pic in here, let us know.

So David Letterman was interviewing Bill Murray about his film portrayal of Franklin D. Roosevelt. In discussing FDR, Murray said, "He knows who's on the dime." I had never heard the expression before, so I was a bit lost. I found out it means someone who is clued up, but I think in the broader social context, those most likely to actually KNOW who's on the dime are not likely to be though of as terribly clued up in the way the saying means.

Ok, so when you do a listing, there's a place that your photos are stored. Go to "View My TradeMe" and look for "My Photos". Select "Upload Photo". Once uploaded , go to "View My Photos". Click on the photo of the coin. Once it's visible full screen, cut and paste the address into a message here. Hold down the ALT button and tap the letter D. This selects the address. Hold down CTRL and tap the letter C. Come into here in a new message , hold down CTRL and tap the letter V. Press "Post Message."

I don't think its a sovereign as it says on the back "made in Germany" and is only 14mm, not sure what it is, and yes Echoriath, it is Nurnberg after having a closer look. Sure strains the eyes!

I have got 5 of these three are octagonal (12mm) and the others circular (13mm), pretty primitive and have some sort of green snot on one face of each coin. I had thought that they might have been pocket money for Pygmy's but yet again I was mistaken. Will let the other auction run before I decide if I am going to let these 5 little pieces of Crap loose on the market place.
